Clare Cooper- Marcus, in her book titled ‘Healing Gardens: Therapeutic and Design Recommendations’ notes that connections to nature can provide relief, comfort and hope to patients in even the most difficult of circumstances. The landscape goal and open space vision for the Clark Drive Project embraces landscape design supportive of holistic healing - not only at the level of the individual but also through connections to the larger community and the environment. DESIGN PRINCIPLES Principle 1: Healing Environments Create environments that foster healing through access and/or views to nature. This is accomplished by providing reflective and active spaces, promoting wellness and offering therapeutic functions of a variety of scales. Key components include: Access to nature Movement and exercise Choice and safety Social Support Access To Nature Plants, wildlife, flowers, and nature reduce stress, lessen hospital stays, while also improving satisfaction for staff. Movement And Exercise Movement and exercise are important aspects of rehabilitation and promotion of whole health and wellness. Choice And Safety Provide patients, visitors and staff with the opportunity to make choices, find escape and refuge, and experience privacy. Social Support Provide private and communal places to meet with family, friends, and consider design that supports patients as well as their visitors and the staff. Principle 2: Regenerative Landscape Provide a landscape promoting ecological health. This can be accomplished through use of: Native adapted and drought tolerant plantings LID on-site water retention strategy Food systems and ethno-botanical garden Liveable and accessible landscape design. Principle 3: Spirit of Place Create an experiential and identifiable landscape narrative for people fostering wellness and connections with community.
