2016 Holiday Banquet Jim Christian
IT’S DECEMBER AND TIME FOR OUR LAST MEETING OF 2016.
Our annual holiday potluck banquet is Saturday, December 10th
at the Grange, with
the doors opening at 4:00pm for those who are going to help Cathy Brown decorate.
We’ll begin the potluck at 6:00pm so please have your potluck creations there by
5:45pm. After we’ve (or at least most of us) finished dinner we’ll move into our awards,
installation of 2017 officers, gift exchange, and tree decoration contest winner.
For you folks who have first joined in 2016 here’s how it works. If you would like to
participate in the gift exchange, you would bring a gift marked “man”, “woman”,
“boy”, or “girl”, and then during the exchange you too are eligible to choose a gift. If
you would like to participate in the tree decoration contest you would make a
decoration, hang it on the tree (the tree is about 3 feet tall) and the members vote on
the one they most like. Hope to see you there!
A New Adventure for the Club Jim Christian
During the 2nd
weekend of November the club participated in the Gem Faire at the
WA State Fairgrounds and thanks to those who represented our club it was an
outstanding success. We were located just inside the entrance which gave us great
visibility and we were able to talk about our club with way over 100 people. The
space needle was there but it turns out that the map of the United States made from
rocks, the one that typically hangs on the wall at the Grange, was as big a draw as
the space needle. Tony Johnson had already scheduled a field trip to Greenwater
the next weekend and a number of folks we met at the Gem Faire also turned out to
participate in the field trip. We’ve already reserved space for the next Gem Faire at
the end of next March and we will be having a much bigger presence, with more
exhibits and demonstrations. More to come in a few weeks.

Kid’s Corner Diana Acosta
Our November 11th meeting was a lot of fun. The kids are now working on fossils, so we
decided to make our own with clay, fossils, and plaster of paris. I'm not sure how they
turned out because they were not dry enough to "crack open". All I know is we had a
good time. In attendance were: Aiden, Christopher, Christina, Crystal and Aurora.
Thank you all for coming! I also want to thank Steve, Brenda and Anne for all your help
with the kids, I couldn't do it without you!
Since there are no meetings in December, we will not have another Juniors Meeting
until next year on January 13th, 2017. Fossils will still be the topic. Hope to see you
then.
Have a wonderful holiday!

Rock-A-Teer
You Know You are Having an Interesting Club Show Experience
When… Brett Lawrence
1. You help with set up and pull a muscle or twist something before the big event has even started.
2. You’re late for your shift of volunteer duty and that little blue light in your rearview mirror isn’t a K-mart
special.
3. On the morning after set up, on the first show day, you discover your display case is home to a visitor in
the form of a little furry four-footed friend.
4. The weather was all nice the week leading up to the show and a heat wave sets in on the first day—or,
conversely, the monsoons start.
5. You’ve convinced yourself you have a really nice display case only to find your associates to either side
have snappy ones that - you know in your heart of hearts - puts yours to shame.
6. You just discovered you forgot something when unloading your vehicle and that is was your cooler with
all the water, soda, and lunch - #@&^/?%!
7. It’s either feast or famine with the help, and if it’s the latter, you exercise some self-sacrifice and
volunteer for another shift.
8. On any one day the only rain shower in the whole county just happens to target your show.
9. Your allowance goes only so far, and there’s never enough $’s to cover your desired purchases.
10. You need some tools and items for your projects only to find your needed vendor didn’t come.
11. Your relief promises that hell would freeze over before he/she is late…well, guess what? Leading to number 12...
12. Your shift relief still hasn’t shown up yet, you’re engaged in a conversation with an inquisitive guest - and
Mother Nature’s been hassling you for the last half hour.
13. The food vendor just ran out of your favorite munchie.
14. Your wife offers you a turn at a break and you lose track of time ogling over a vendor table full of nice items that
have snagged your attention…and that a promise of dinner out after closing time yields forgiveness and lots of
brownie points.
15. You interact with a guest who happens to be an obnoxious know-it-all and that to terminate the exchange you
have to fib with a polite excuse of needing to go relieve yourself.
16. You eyed a mineral specimen at a great bargain early on and that it remained available all weekend…only to
discover it sold when you went back to purchase it. To add insult to injury, it was picked up by a visitor you only
recently had a friendly chat with and now watch him walk off with it - #@&^/?%!
17. You’re managing the club raffle and find it has been inundated with donations that take a long time to work
through.
