6Reverse Your Thinking about Adultery, Oaths, & Retaliation

THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23).

God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

Your Thoughts

Think about it:

The lustful look is one that gives

gratification and satisfies the flesh.

Think About it:

John 18:19-23 & Acts 23:1-5 reveal how

Jesus & Paul turned the other cheek.

Read Matthew 5:27-32. Jesus repeats the seventh commandment in verse twenty-seven from the law in Exodus 20:14. Jesus reveals the truth about adultery in the verse that follow. Sin begins in the heart. Jesus teaches that adultery is not only committed in physical action but in the thoughts and intents of the heart. The man that looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Lust is a strong craving, desire, longing after. It is a passion and an appetite. It is used in the sense of evil except three times where it is translated “desire” So when does the glance become lust? The word “looketh” helps us understand this. This word

means to look on continually. It is not the first involuntary glance that is the problem. It is the second or the prolonged stare. It is the deliberate look that feeds the flesh and desire. It is this continual look that turns the glance into a lustful look. Read II Corinthians 10:5.

Read Matthew 5:33-37. Forswear means to swear falsely or not perform an oath. The Old Testament permitted people to make an oath in God’s

What it Means to Walk in Christ’s Footsteps Lesson 6

Jesus says we are not to retaliate and He gives us four illustrations. First we are not to retaliate a slap on the face. This does not mean we are not allowed to protect life in self defense. The Bible clearly teaches this. Read Nehemiah 4:13-14, Ezekiel 33:6, and Luke 22:36. A A slap is not life threatening. Second we are not to retaliate in court by counter-suing. If you lose offer more than asked. Christians should not to go court against one another. Read I Corinthians 6:1-8. Third, instead of retaliating we are to go the extra mile. Roman authority could make someone become a public courier for one mile. Jesus says rather than getting angry be willing to go an extra mile. Lastly, instead of retaliating do the opposite which is give. Does this mean we walk around giving everything away? Not exactly. We must apply other principles of scripture. We must be able to take care of ourselves and family first (I Tim. 5:8). Give what is asked for rather than cash. Do not encourage a habitual beggar or laziness. Read II Thessalonians 3:10.

Your Thoughts

Read Matthew 5:38-42. This is talking about retaliation which is returning evil for evil. This was correct but was given for the judges to carry out for punishment. The Pharisees changed the truth and allowed for individuals to carry it out. This was not God’s intent. Retaliation is a job for a third party so that no personal emotions are involved. (Romans 13:4)

THE TRUTH ABOUT RETALIATION

THE TRUTH ABOUT ADULTERY

Being a Doer of the Word

THE TRUTH ABOUT AN OATH

Jesus reveals to us the truth that thinking in our mind and heart is the same as acting physically. The lustful look is so dangerous and easily leads to physical adultery. Jesus tells us not to look or touch in 5:29-30. The one leads to the other. Jesus says it better to loose an eye or a hand than to be destroyed by adultery. He was not telling us to hurt ourselves but to control ourselves. This reveals how strongly the Lord feels about sexual purity.

name which had to be kept. The Pharisees changed this to allow oaths in other names such as those listed in 5:34-36. This allowed the Pharisees a way out of keeping an oath. Jesus reveals the truth by saying we should not swear at all because anything we swear by leads back to God. Read James 5:12. We should just be people of our word. Do what you say you are going to do with a simple “yes” or “no”.
