24 May 2016 Dear Parents Last week I had the pleasure of joining Room 7 for their morning prayer. I was very impressed with the reverence the students demonstrated and the peaceful start it gave us all to our day. It was particularly refreshing that in the busy lives we lead that this prayer session included no technology but instead was centred on the students and prayer. The photo to the right is the display the students created in their buddy classes for Catholic Schools Day last week. Please keep the children who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday in your prayers. It is great to see such a big group taking part in this Sacrament again this year.

We look forward to St Patrick’s College Rector Neil Swindells visiting our school this Wednesday to talk with our Year 8 boys about what the College has to offer. Thank you to everyone who came along to the new entrant parent meeting last week. We enjoyed the opportunity to talk with parents about how the new entrant class operates and answer any questions. Thank you to Mrs Minto for running this session.

We are looking forward to the team from the Education Review Office visiting us next week and working with us by providing us with feedback about how we are meeting the needs of our students. This Friday we have a group of students representing our school at a Chess Tournament at Newlands Intermediate. We wish them well and know they will represent our school with pride.

WEEKLY REFLECTION - Pope Francis - Amoris Laetitia encyclical

“I sincerely believe that Jesus wants a Church attentive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weakness, a Mother who, while clearly expressing her objective teaching, ‘always does what good she can, even if in the process, her shoes get soiled by the mud of the street’.” [308]

Page 3: 6 QUEENS BIRTHDAY St Patrick’s College Open Day Newsletter ... · St Patrick’s College, Wellington, is holding an Open Day on Sunday 12 June from 1:30 to 4 pm. Prospective students,

Year 7 & 8 students were asked to write the beginning of a story that was set in a castle, to tie in with their current Medieval Times topic.

Ruins “Come on Bethany, we need to go!” Sophie whispered. “What if we get caught? You know mum doesn’t let us go places at midnight!” “Duh! Of course she doesn’t, but we HAVE to go see the castle!” “Ok FINE! As long as if we get caught you don’t blame me!” Sophie and Bethany snuck out of the room, ready to meet their other friends at the castle. “I still don’t understand the big deal about a lame old castle!” Bethany said to Sophie once they were far enough away from the house. “Didn’t I tell you already? I don’t want my friends thinking I’m a wuss!” Sophie replied. “Ugh! You and your reputation!” Bethany said, rolling her eyes. Sophie sighed and speed-walked ahead. Once they were at the castle, Bethany noticed a group of girls leaning against the wall, all wearing matching tops. “So you decided to show up! Wow, I’m impressed!” one of them said, obviously talking to Sophie. “Did you think I wouldn’t!” Sophie shot back, annoyed. “Sarah, I think she’s mad!” A girl with dark brown hair said to the first one, Sarah. “Oh let’s just go already!” Sophie said to them, and walked inside. Bethany stared at the inside of the castle, mesmerised. Half of the tall, thick stone walls were ruined, but the other half stood tall and strong. Bits of dusty fabric that must have once been tapestries or carpet littered the ground. Sarah sniffed. “Ugh! I thought it would be more impressive than scraps of fabric and ruined rocks!” “Oh come on- um, Sarah? Look at how cool this is!” Bethany said, unimpressed by her sister’s choice of friends. The group walked into the dimly lit castle, looking around. Bethany flashed a scared glance over at Sarah, who glared back. “Um, I’m just going to have a look around.” Bethany said to the others “Uh, I don’t know Bethany, you might get-,” Sophie started. “Of course you can! Sophie, you should let your little sister have a look around, right?” Sarah interrupted. “Ok sure, if you want to.” Sophie mumbled, looking at Sarah. “Ok!” Bethany said, and ran off. The castle was great, it looked so cool. Bethany was glad she decided to come. She looked around for a while, then called out, “Guys! Where are you?” But no-one answered. They must be far away, she thought, and re-traced her steps. She looked for ages, but she had no idea where they were. Suddenly the thought hit her, realisation swept over her like a crashing wave. She was lost. In the castle. Alone. By Maya Dmochowski, Year 7
