The oldest references on the origin of this castle date back
to the XI century.

In less than 100 years and after D.Sesnando’s
governing orders, this castle’s importance had
increased in such a way that further defences had
to be built.

Built in 1142, Castelo de Germanelo was an addition to
help Penela in the region’s defence.
Not much is left of this “Germanelo” defence and the access is only on foot through muddy grounds.
