ACADEMIC NEWS TRIMESTER 1 2019
What a great start to the 2019-2020 academic school year! The St. Mark Administration would like to share with you our Trimester 1 Academic Newsletter which highlights many of the wonderful activities, projects and experiments our students worked on during this period. We hope you enjoy this view into the classrooms and events that support our mission: educating the whole child - spiritually, academically and physically. ~ Mrs. Leuci

7th GRADE HONOR ROLL
Our guidance counselor, Mrs. Hartsfield, shared the story of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant with our Pre K students. The class created their own patchwork elephants while learning how Elmer embraced his individuality.
Kindergarten started out the year with a Mo Willems author study. Students
learned why “Pigeon has to go to School,” and many other Pigeon stories
that taught lessons about how to use our manners. They continued the
author study with the “Elephant and Piggie” series learning about their
friendship. This included lessons on sharing and including everyone in play.
We have enjoyed seeing new friendships blossom this trimester in
Kindergarten!
Kindergarten
Pre-K students are participating in a lesson on beginning sounds.
2nd grade students learned
about Saints in preparation
for All Saints Day. Each
student dressed as their
favorite Saint in celebration of the day!
Our 1st grade artists experimented with printmaking! They
used this new skill to creatively make lion prints!
In 2nd Grade Science
students have a blast learning with slime!
3rd Grade students worked in small groups to create an extended rhythm pattern (based on yummy foods) to play on a fidget spinner. Students then added chord symbols so that the entire rhythm could be played on the ukulele, creating their own song!
Grade 3 students also participated in a STEM activity to determine which group could build the tallest card structure!
4th grade classes enjoyed a visit to
Greenfield Lake to learn about
ecosystems.

3rd Grade
Students created a potato project on famous people from NC!
6th grade science students used dry ice to learn about the states of matter and how things can move between states. Moving directly from solid to gas is known as sublimation and our students learned that dry ice is a cool example of that!
In 5th Grade students divided in
groups to receive, read and
then teach a parable’s lesson!
6th Grade band warming up for practice!
8th Grade Math 2 participated in
finding equations parabolic curves in
our school. Students are applying
what they have learned about finding
vertex, Max height, and solutions to
produce and apply their calculations to
find equations of parabolic curves in
the real world.
In Library Media 7th graders learned about advertising, target markets
and data collection. They used Census.gov and market data to
determine their target audience for their new product under
development.
Our 8th grade students kicked off the
year with a retreat at St. Therese.
