*Parishes conducting a combined campaign with an assigned diocesan goal and an individual parish goal.**Conducting a combined campaign with an assigned diocesan goal and an individual parish goal. St. Michael fulfilled its commitment to the diocese ahead of schedule in March, 2013.
Campaign collects more than $29 million to dateThe Hawaii Catholic Commu-
nity Foundation, which manages the money collected through the Diocese of Honolulu’s With Grate-ful Hearts capital campaign, re-ports that, as of March 31, it has received more than $29 million of the original amount pledged which exceeded $50 million.
All parishes were required to participate in this initiative. The first column of figures below is the
donation goal set for each parish. The second column is the amount of money collected as of March 31 this year. The third column notes the percentage of the goal col-lected. The fourth column is the amount of money collected that has been returned to the parish.
Parishes receive 25 percent of the funds collected up to its goal. Of the money a parish collects over its goal, it receives half. A par-
ish earns back 80 percent of the money exceeding 150 percent of its goal.
Five parishes conducted “com-bined campaigns,” to raise addition-al funds for special parish needs.

Island-born Jesuit to celebrate first Mass at home parish in AieaBy Patrick downesHawaii Catholic Herald
Hawaii-born Phillip Alcon Ganir will be ordained a Jesuit priest on June 8 at Blessed Sacra-ment Church in Hollywood, Calif.
The new priest will celebrate a first Mass of Thanksgiving at his home parish of St. Elizabeth in Aiea, at 6 p.m., June 23. A light dinner will follow in the parish hall.
Ganir is the son of Brigido and Lourdes Ganir of Foster Village, Honolulu. He attended St. Eliza-beth Grade School, is a 1994 grad-uate of Damien Memorial High School and went to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He entered the Jesuit order in 1999.
During his 14-years of forma-tion, a fairly typical length of time for a Jesuit, he earned a number of academic degrees and served in a variety of ministries across the Mainland. He also worked or studied in a least six foreign coun-tries.
Ganir was ordained a deacon by San Jose Bishop Patrick Mc-Grath last Oct. 20 at Santa Clara University in California.
In an interview with the Ha-waii Catholic Herald last Decem-ber, Ganir expressed gratitude to all those who helped him on his path to ordination.
“I am grateful to the order and to our benefactors for investing their time, energy and resources into my vocation,” he said. “I am grateful to my Hawaii-based fam-ily and friends who have commu-nicated their steady love and sup-
port through phone calls, email, letters, gifts and care packages.”
“Most importantly,” he said, “my gratitude to God only deep-ens because I am more aware that the call to religious life is a pure gift — a freely given grace. I did nothing to earn it. The story of my vocation is the story of Jesus cap-tivating my heart, and my (will-ing though sometimes sloppy) re-sponse to that call.
“This gift of my priestly voca-tion compels me to give of myself fully and generously for no other reason than because Jesus gave of himself so fully and generously,” he said.
“I am thrilled to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Eliza-beth Church, Aiea, my home par-ish,” he said.

The early morning bread crewPatricia Tavares, Sarah Tavares and Leona Tavares of the Kula Catholic Com-munity lead the crew of women and men who tirelessly bake their famous Holy Ghost Portuguese sweet bread once a month, sometimes getting up as early as 2:30 a.m. to get the ingredients and supplies ready. Their dedica-tion and love for the Maui parish, along with the other countless volun-teers, is much appreciated.
Hawaii-born Jesuit deacon Phillip Ganir will be ordained on June 8.
