FoundationsWelcome

In this issue...

As I shared at Speech Night last year, 2014, is a year based around the theme of FOUNDATIONS. As we leave a year where UNCHARTED discoveries were our experience, foundations will now be our phrase that carries us through 2014. Even the greatest adventures into the unknown start from a known position, a foundation. Of knowing where they come from and why they are going.Whether it is

Portuguese explorers leaving Europe for the southern ocean, or the early settlers forging a path over the blue mountains out of Sydney; thru to astronauts leaving the sunny Florida cape or even Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor going a long way round, or a long way down - they knew what their foundations were. This school knows its firm

foundation is in God. It knows it started on the bent knees of a prayerful group of founding families in the mid 1960’s. The school knows what it means to not simply just know what it is, but to believe in it.In 2014 we will remind ourselves

of our foundations, of three

cornerstones that signify our existence. Our faith: a belief in God strong

enough to prompt, guide and lead our choices and our path. Our profession: a knowledge

that education is paramount to finding ones place in the world, to understanding the possible and pursuing the seemingly impossible with confidence. To take seriously

the responsibility of assisting in the building the community of tomorrow: one child at a time. Our relationships: people matter.

Without relationship there is no community, just proximity and proximity is simply not enough.

- Dean Bennetts

Happy New Year to you all, and welcome back to school for 2014.I sincerely pray that 2014 is

a year where you can each see God’s leading in your life and find fulfillment, peace and real happiness.I say this knowing full well

that we all face significant challenges, and many of our school families are facing such challenges even as I write this. I do though pray that as community, we can support each other and when the journey is hard, that we can lighten the load and lend a hand to those who are a part of our broader school community: part of us.

2013 HSCCongratulations to the graduating class

of 2014. Already the stories of courses achieved, offers accepted and life adventures commencing are flowing in.Approximately a third of the class are

taking ‘gap’ year experiences including working locally, working in Sydney and Newcastle, travel around Australia and overseas and with a few securing work overseas for 12 months as well. For the other two thirds, full and part time employment, full and part time study, as well as a number of traineeships are the plans for 2014.Whilst we of course again thank and

congratulate all parents, students and staff involved in the HSC program we want to acknowledge, as we do each year, some noteworthy results. The following subjects achieved well in

advance of the state average and in some cases also contained multiple band 6 results (top possible achievement band)• Music (Mr. Raethel and Mr. Miller)• Maths Ext 1 (Mr. Harris)• General Maths (Mrs. Lovell and Mr.

Rappell)• Eng Ext 2 (Ms. Bews, Mr. Robartson

and Mrs. Thapa)• Drama (Mrs. Sleigh)• Visual Art (Mr. Myers and Ms.

Kimberley)• Chemistry (Mrs. Slade)This broad cross section of subjects;

from fine and performing arts, thru to music, maths, science and english is a wonderful validation of the school pursuing as broad a curriculum as it can and not pigeonholing the subject line up into one particular discipline. We look forward to maintaining and developing this further in the years ahead, as we now have the critical mass to support these senior subjects long term.In 2013, the year 12 classes numbered

56; in 2014 the year 12 classes have 73 students with another 70 in year 11. It is exciting to see the impact of the quad stream flowing through to senior school and providing the basis to not only maintain, but grow and strengthen the HSC program further.

Road to BethlehemThank you, thank you and thank you.As RTB enters its second decade 2013 saw the largest numbers ever. Well over 4,000 people attended RTB for the tours and many more for the fun, food and atmosphere. Many are school families and friends and we thank you for that.2013 was a change up, as a new location was found for the market and food stalls, along with refined traffic flows, access points and socializing space. The result was a less crowded experience for all, fewer queues and an overall more relaxed atmosphere – with in excess of 1,000 extra people across the three nights adding to the vibe but not the crush! So many commented on how ‘uncrowded’ the nights felt and that there was room to breath. This is great feedback to help direct us as we develop the program more. It truly is and will continue to be the quintessential year-end celebration for the Central Coast Adventist School and broader coast community. Based on this year’s feedback there is a real focus now on increasing the programs exposure and advertising to the broader coast community. In the weeks and months ahead you will hear more as we prepare for the 2014 program. We thank the countless number of school community and church community members that helped out and we look forward to seeing you again as we work side by side to deliver this wonderful Christmas tradition here on our campus. Also a big and special thank you to Sue Saunders and the Home and School team for their first year involvement in the retail side of the RTB marketplace; well organized, great variety and real fun atmosphere for all involved. To quote one central coast community family with no connection to the school or church community;“It isn’t Christmas time until we have been to Road to Bethlehem.”What a great endorsement of the program.Enough said.

Principal’s Update

EnrolmentAs we are all aware, the last few years have seen fluctuations in enrolments, both

up and down, across different grades and as a whole school. Two factors have been at play and almost equaling each other out. Factor one is of course the expansion program in secondary school from a three to a four-stream model that is now almost fully through to Year 12. The other factor of course has been the increasing financial challenges faced by families in the context of the broader economic experience we all share in.

In saying this, the school is truly blessed to not only be maintaining its size but also seeing growth in particular areas where there are vacancies. To this end we expect this years enrolment to higher than in 2013. Once this is confirmed in the first few weeks of school I will let you know how it all has ended up.

As shared in the past, the enrolment of the school will sit in the vicinity of the high 800’s low 900’s Pre-K to 12 in the future as structurally; the school is no longer a growth school. The school has now achieved its desired structure of a double stream primary and quad stream secondary school. Consolidation, not growth is now our new focus.

Basketball Championships

We welcome the following staff in 2014:• Ms Lauren Inwood – Primary teacher• Mr Sandro Bastos – Secondary

Science• Ms Renee Mau - Secondary English• Mr Joshua Stewart - Secondary

English• Mrs Rose Tikoicina – Finance Office

A team of well over 50 competitors, parents and staff traveled to Melbourne for this week long competition. The school once again pitted itself against schools with vastly more students and resources than us. The school though, with its focus on ‘character first, results second’ achieved highly notable results and left many in Melbourne impressed with this small private school from the Central Coast of NSW.2013 Australian Schools Basketball Championships CCAS results:• U20 Boys - 3rd in Division 1 (10

teams)• U17 Girls - 2nd in Division 2 (7

teams)• U15 Boys - 4th in Division 3 (8

teams)• U15 Girls - 6th in Division 2 (7

teams)Congratulations to all involved. The basketball program takes much time and commitment from students, parents, coaches and teaching staff across the year and we wish to both thank and congratulate them all. We are proud of them as individuals, as a team and of course for the results achieved.

Principal’s Update

Year End ChangesFollowing on from the RTB theme we have some developments also that relate to year-end 2014.Over the course of this year there has been discussion and review of our closure and graduation process for Year 12. Listening to parental feedback, researching with peer schools and looking at possible changes has led us to trialing a new process in 2014.Year 12 will for the first time, have a specific Graduation Ceremony created for them. This will take place during the day on Thursday September 18 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. Year 12 families and friends will be honored guests on the day and the 7-11 students will witness the graduation program in the company of their roll teachers. Year 12 parents and family friends will no longer face restricted invitations and can therefore invite more family and friends to this special occasion. It will be a far more formal, and specific to Year 12 program, in difference to our historical Year 7-12 Speech Night. The following day will be the traditional ‘last day of school’ or ‘fun day’, ‘muck up day’ for Year 12 and the end of their formal school attendance. The Valedictory Dinner will remain, of course, along with the MAD Trip and other year 12 closure experiences. We are very excited about this trial and the likelihood of evolving a new tradition that focuses on our year 12’s with greater intent and an increase in the sense of transition into young adulthood.Years K-6 will still retain their Speech Night tradition, whilst Years 7-11 will change to a Presentation Night. At this point discussion is taking place as to the final details of this structure but the choices are to either remain with both programs on the one night or to conduct them across two successive days as ‘twilight’ or ‘afternoon’ programs. This will be decided in the coming weeks. To facilitate this change, and to allow the school community to prepare for RTB, these programs are moving from the traditional Thursday night program to Monday for Primary school and Tuesday of that same week for secondary school.Whilst they are listed on the calendar, they will be confirmed, along with a more detailed overview of the closure cycle later in Term 1 UPDATES.In a broad sense families can still plan as they always have for school closure in the second week of December and OOSH care will commence immediately following school closure as per normal. Primary has removed their student free day for report collation, however the secondary one remains due to year-end exams. We are excited about this further refinement to the year-end program allowing the school to formally celebrate and close its academic program and then celebrate RTB as a community.

MAD TripAs we approach nearly a decade

of MAD (Make a Difference) trips it is worth reflecting upon the place they fill in our school experience. We only need to read the paper or watch TV to see the impact of alcohol fueled violence and the unsupervised party experience being promoted by the ‘schoolies week’ experiences around Australia. The school is proud to have

now offered the opportunity for students to experience something completely different as away of celebrating the end of their formal schooling. An overseas trip to the South Pacific, sunny days and balmy nights, turquoise blue water and loads of fun, but at the same time helping those less fortunate. Painting buildings, running kids programs, mixing with locals and supporting island schools has proved a wonderful experience for all involved. So to Mrs. Bazley and her team,

thank you. I encourage all parents to talk over this opportunity with their children right from early high school so that it can be seriously considered as an alternative to ‘schoolies week’. If the trip is not to your child’s liking, please seriously engage with your children then in the planning of their celebration time. There are too many stories of negative life changing events taking place during this ‘schoolies week’ time due to too much freedom, too quickly!

European Experience Tours 20152015 will see the bi-annual European Experience Tours on again but planning

starts now!

Two tours have approximately 3 weeks in Europe during the mid year holiday time (which is three weeks for us here). One tour group goes to France, whilst the other tours through Germany, Austria and Italy. Approximately 20-25 students participate on each trip.

Information nights will be happening soon so please keep this in mind as you scan the newsletter and information coming home from your children.

Campus ChurchThe school is truly blessed to be more than a five-day a week experience. Come Friday afternoon a new vibe takes over as our ‘Sabbath’, our church day arrives. From Friday night programs, through to Saturday morning church and then Saturday evening and weekend family events, Campus Church keeps the options open for families right thru the weekend: community 7 days a week.Check the newsletter and app UPDATEs each week to see what is on and where. Everyone is invited to attend the weekly weekend services. Dress is casual, the worship style is contemporary and the emphasis is on making news friends, meeting old friends and meeting Jesus.

SEQTA2014 sees the school take the next steps

into the future. Over the course of the year the school will be changing over from its current database management system that was once, cutting edge, but is now in need of a refresh. Our new web hosted system will

eventually (towards the end of 2014) give parents immediate online access to a vast myriad of school details and information regarding their children. From accessing schedules and timetables

and curriculum expectations thru to homework, assignments and even, the ability to eventually access reports on line if they so desire rather than a paper copy. This ‘next step’ was a major desire that

was evident in the recent parent surveys and we are pleased to share that we are on the way.We will keep you posted as this

develops and more elements come on line.

Home & School

QASF

A big thank you to the new Home and School team from 2013. Sue Saunders and her team have contributed significantly to the broader school community over the past year and this is noted and appreciated. This is just a brief advertisement that if you are interested in helping out, being part of the team or even lead out in any particular event – please just make contact.

Following our successful 2013 Board of Studies review and audit, and as you know we received the maximum five year reaccreditation, we have now commenced the next strategic plan journey. As is the case in many industries, new leaders bring new language. Education is much the same. For the past 15 years strategic planning has been the phrase used to explain intentional and focused planning for school growth and development. This is now being phased out, and no doubt you have heard the ‘quality schools’ phrases coming from Canberra. To this end, as of 2014, Quality Adventist Schools Framework is now the national approach across all Adventist schools when it comes to school development, management and planning. I am proud to say that the Adventist schools nationally are one of the first to adopt the new approach from Canberra and the model developed here, in Australia inside our national body, is being used as an example of how to go about this pursuit of quality across other sectors. In a nutshell the model involves 20 distinct elements of school life that are reviewed over a 5-year cycle (4 per year). These then feed back into quality improvements on an annual and rotating basis. The premise being that it is the annual, regular and ongoing pursuit of quality that delivers best results. We will keep you aware and involved in this process over the months ahead.

Uniform Shop and DevelopmentsA reminder from last year that, as of the end

of 2013, Alinta Apparel, are now the external operators of the Central Coast Adventist School Uniform Shop.A big thank you to Mrs. Terese Melville

for her many, many years of managing the uniform shop and overseeing some big developments and changes since the mid 90’s! She remains part of our team and is now the Sport Centre facility supervisor, assisting in managing the numerous external bookings and use of our facilities by local sports clubs. We thank her for her past efforts and look forward to her impact in this new role.Alinta Apparel is not only one of the major

school uniform shop service providers in the state but even better, are based right here, on the Central Coast. You will notice that they have completely

gutted and refurbished the current store and it looks great! They have placed a new manger and have published new hours of operation. The school of course retains oversight with the development and direction of the uniform but ALINTA now are the providers of both the uniform and point of sale services. We welcome them to the school community

and look forward to the years ahead. ALINTA once established, over the coming months, will help us further review and modernize our uniform appearance with an eye to simplify and make it an even more cost effective experience for families. There is a new Uniform Committee, that

includes parent representation, to aid in that process. We will keep you updated as things develop. Suffice to say we have experienced some significant changes with

our emblem change over the past two years and are therefore mindful of a gradual approach if there are any future changes and developments of note. Two ongoing changes for this year we are

still working on, is further refinement of the 7-12 boys shirts and girls blouses and subsequently ties for both boys and girls 7-12 in winter, to allow for identifying years 7-10 and 11 and 12 students more easily.Year 11 and 12 students will have their own

unique tie for winter (navy with school crest) and girls will be, after many years of asking, moving to a longer tie, similar to the boys, as a result of a new blouse being phased in for them.Years 7-10 boys tie remains the same (tartan)

but also, in response to numerous requests from girls over the years, 7-10 girls will also have a tartan longer tie like the boys becoming available.Years 11 and 12 girl’s blouses have slightly

different piping to junior girls and Years 11 and 12 boys have a piping line on their pocket so as to distinguish them from the junior school. These simple changes will aid in school management of students around campus whilst reducing the need for multiple different pieces of uniform as in the past.Gone are the days of changing jumpers,

sports clothes, shirts and jackets. As with all our changes, these still remain

firmly in the guise of a two-year change over window. So, senior students can wear new emblem but non-piped shirts into their senior years if so desired.Uniform News will be out during each term

so stay tuned for the latest as it happens.

iPads2014 sees a trial of iPads in Year 5 as part of a move into a more integrated approach to technology in upper primary and junior high school education. The iPads are class based and there is no need for families to purchase their own. Students will use them in class along similar approaches, but with higher use, than our senior primary laptops.

Whilst the HSC remains a hand written exam our focus remains on mental arithmetic, spelling and handwriting, but this move into integrated technology use in class is a sensible step in enhancing the educational experience. It is foreseeable in the not too distant future that entry level tablet devices for school use will appear on book lists and be cheaper than a pair of school shoes!

In the meantime we will carefully consider and implement cost effective and contextually relevant IT support via annual review. We will of course keep you aware of these developments and how the trial progresses throughout the year.

For more information please contact Mr. Chris Riley, Year 5 teacher and program coordinator.

Seasons for Growth‘Sadly, grief is something that most children will experience to some degree during their childhood. In school, we see children at various developmental stages experience it. Their reactions and questions can make parents feel puzzled and uncomfortable, leaving adults unsure of how to help them.Grief is experienced when a loss occurs. This may be the death of a pet, the end of a parent’s marriage, a big move of house or the death of a relative close to the child’s heart.’Seasons for Growth is an 8 session program run in school hours to support children in working through their feelings. It is aimed at recognising emotions, highlighting that we all feel like this at some time and learning that feelings come and go. Please remember that the Primary school will be running the Season’s for Growth program again in 2014 terms 2 and 3.

We will be holding an information session later in term 1 and handing out application forms for students to be enrolled. Any queries about this program should be directed to Jane Hughes [email protected] or Rebecca Stratford [email protected]
