The TMC, however denied the Congress allegations and said the elec- tions have been peaceful. Polling began this morning amidst tight security. The voting was initially slow with few voters trickling in the early hours, but picked up after 10 AM in Lakhimpur, though it continues to be slow in Baitha- langsu Assembly constituency, official sources said. There was no report of any untoward incident so far though a strict vigil is being maintained in different seg- ments of both the constituencies. BJP has sought an apology from Azad, the Leader of Op- position in the Rajya Sabha, for his remarks but he has rejected the demand. “Will the truth change if Azad apologises?” asked an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. “In the Uri attack, 20 jawans were martyred. Due to the de- monetisation, 40 brave patri- ots have lost their lives (while standing in queues at banks to exchange demonetised notes). “The difference is in the at- tackers. Apollo Hospitals Chairman Pratap C Reddy had yesterday said that the Chief Minister’s mental functions are absolutely normal and that she can leave for home as and when she wants to, but continues to recuperate in the ICU to avoid any infection. The 68-year-old AIADMK su- premo was also ‘living beautifully’ without ventilator, but respira- tory support was being given to her periodically to ensure that her lungs don’t collapse, Reddy said. Asked by reporters when Jayalalithaa could resume her official responsibilities, Reddy said ‘responsibilities at that level is to guide and direct. I suppose that she can do well even now.’ The Chief Minister is sleeping normally, eating normal food and increased high-protein diet that her body needs,’ he said. This is the second biggest encounter in Bastar this month after bodies of six naxals, including three women, were recov- ered post a gun battle in Dantewada on November 16. “At least half a dozen cadres of Military Company VI of Maoists were killed in the gun battle at Narayan- pur,” Kalluri said tagging the operation as “surgical strike”. Meanwhile, AIADMK spokes-person Nanchil Sampath said that Jayalalithaa will return home in a few days.

the hospital on September 22 after she complained of fever and dehydration. Later, the hospital had said she was being treated for infection, with respiratory support, among others.

Specialists from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and from London, have treated her dur-ing the period.

RaiPuR Five naxals were gunned down by security forces in the jungles of Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district in Maoist hotbed Bastar, police said on Saturday. “The skirmish took place last night between a joint team of District Reserve Group (DRG) and ultras in the jungles of Tuspal and Becha Kilam villages under Chhotedongar police sta-tion limits,” Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), S R P Kalluri said. This is the second biggest encounter in Bastar this month after bodies of six naxals, including three women, were recov-ered post a gun battle in Dantewada on November 16. “At least half a dozen cadres of Military Company VI of Maoists were killed in the gun battle at Narayan-pur,” Kalluri said tagging the operation as “surgical strike”. DRG teams from Kondagaon and Narayanpur districts had jointly launched the operation into the core areas of Abhujmad - considered as Maoist den, based on specific inputs, the IG said. When they reached the jungles of Tuspal and Becha Kilam, the gun battle broke out between both the sides, he said. / PTI /
