Gil MichaelsAlameda’s epicures, insuffer-
able food snobs, snooty culinary elitists, foodies, amateur restau-rant critics and other annoying recreational eaters may be delight-ed to know that after a four-year hiatus, the “Fearless Forks” awards have returned, just in time to cele-brate the close of 2013.
There were three reasons for the hiatus. First, recreational eat-ing isn’t cheap. Trying to glean the best goodies from A-Town’s 170-plus eateries costs mucho din-ero. Second, gluttony is notori-ously unhealthy. Two of Alameda Epicure’s most prolific contribut-ing food snobs, Lucky Pierre and Big Jim, both suffered from serious gluttony-induced ailments — as did I. All three of us ignored the health indicators of impending epi-curean doom.
Those indicators, which pop up quite insidiously, tell you that your life of gluttony may be ending. Some of the indicators are:
1. Your exercise bike collapses from the weight.2. Your cardiologist nicknames you “Lucky.”3. When you walk, your shoes smoke.4. Your doctor has to weigh you on a freight scale.5. Your furniture must be made of cast-iron. 6. The USGS labels your house “seismically active.”7. You can’t fit in a car.8. Most damned doors aren’t wide enough!9. You use bungee cords for belts.10. When you show up, desperate buffet owners call 911.
The third reason is philosophi-cal. Postmodernist sage Friedrich Nietzshe said, “There are no facts, only interpretations.” This primal truth renders all opinions perpet-ually moot. It also reveals restau-rant reviews to be little more than subjective, dubious rhetoric.
In spite of that revelation, the resurgent gluttons at Alameda Epicure will cast philosophy to the flames, and present the Fearless Forks 2013 (in no par-ticular order). These awards are given to deserving eateries who have shown Alamedans the way to digestion heaven via one particu-lar dish.
