“Rare Books. The Alpha Bank Collection” opened at the Exhibition Area

of the Alpha Bank Main Building (12, Pesmazoglou Street and 40, Stadiou Street),

publications, which include works by classical authors (ancient Greek,

Byzantine and Roman authors as well as other foreign authors), dating from

the 16th to the 19th century, works by European travellers who visited the

Greek world from the 17th through the 19th century as well as artistic

publications illustrated by acclaimed Greek painters and printmakers of the

20th century.

The importance of these books is determined by their age, rarity, subject

matter, the presence of prints, maps and painted works on their cover or

in their pages, as well as the cover material, which was usually leather and,

more rarely, wood, fabric, metal etc.

At the opening of the Exhibition, where Members of the Bank’s General

Management and Division Managers were present, the Head of Alpha Bank’s

Corporate Social Responsibility Sylvia Kourkouli made a short introduction

about the Bank’s related activities, which was followed by a guided tour

of the Exhibition, conducted by the Head of the Library Loukia Frosynou.

The Exhibition is accompanied by a Catalogue, in Greek and English,

with explanatory texts and photographs about the featured books.

regorios Xenopoulos, novelist, journalist and playwright, was born in Constantinople on December 9, 1867. He was the eldest

son of merchant Dionyssios Xenopoulos, who came from Zakynthos, and Efthalia Thoma from Constantinople. When he was

eleven months old, his family moved to Zakynthos, where Gregorios spent his childhood and adolescence. In 1883 he enrolled at the

University of Athens to study Physics and Mathematics, but he never completed his studies as the following year he became involved

with literature, which then became his sole occupation. In 1894 he married Efrosyni Diogenidi, with whom he had a daughter, but they

soon got divorced. He got married again, in 1901, to Christina Kanellopoulou, with whom he had two more daughters. He collaborated

with many newspapers and magazines of his time, publishing novels, short stories, articles, studies and reviews. He became director

of “Eikonografimeni Estia” (Illustrated Estia) in 1894 and chief editor of the “Diaplasis ton Paidon” (The Education of the Children)

magazine in 1896. Between 1901 and 1912 he worked with the “Panathinaia” magazine, while in 1912 he started publishing novels

in instalments at the “Ethnos” newspaper. In 1927 he founded the magazine “Nea Estia” and in 1931 he became President of the

National Theatre. He was a regular member of the Athens Academy. He passed away in Athens, on January 14, 1951, aged 84.

Gregorios Xenopoulos first appeared on the literary scene in 1879, as a columnist for the“Diaplasis ton Paidon” (The Education of the Children) magazine. His first novel, titled “O anthropos tou kosmou” (Man of the world), was published in 1888, followed by “NikolasSigalos” in 1890 and later on some of his best works, such as “Margarita Stefa” in 1893 and “Kokkinos vrachos” (The red rock) in 1905. In 1914 he published “O polemos” (War),in 1915 “Oi mystikoi arravones” (Secret engagements) and “Laura” and from 1919 through 1924, the trilogy dealing with social issues “Plousioi kai ftohoi” (Rich and poor), “Timioi kai atimoi” (Honest and dishonest) and “Tycheroi kai atychoi” (Lucky and unlucky). In 1923 he published “Isavella”, in 1925 the “Anadyomeni” and many more. His books are set in Athens and Zakynthos, describing Greek society of that time in the capital or the countryside; they focus on love, mostly between people of different social backgrounds. As a prose writer, he started off writing novels of manners, the trend that was prevalent at that time, but very soon he turned to realism and urban fiction, reflecting upon society, something that he also supported theoretically. The literary tendencies prevailing in Europe and the United States at the time, realism and naturalism, particularly the work of Honoré de Balzac and Émile Zola, had a significant impact on Xenopoulos. Apart from novels and short stories, he also wrote

46 plays, many of which were initially written as prose works and were later adapted for the stage, the most important ones being “To mystiko tis kontessas Valerenas” (The secret of countess Valerena), “Stella Violanti” and “Foititai” (Students). He also translated and adapted many foreign works.

His contribution to literary reviews is also considered important. He published studies about many writers in the “Panathinaia” magazine, while he was the first one to introduce C.P. Cavafy to Athens’ literary audience in 1903.The largest part of his work is written in simple dimotiki (demotic) language, while the psychological profile of his characters and the natural dialogues, which, along with his integrity in terms of writing technique, were the main qualities of his work, are noteworthy. He was one of the most productive writers of his generation, as he wrote more than 80 novels, a large number of short stories and plays as well as studies, articles and reviews.

The Collection of the Bank’s Library includes a large number of works by Gregorios Xenopoulos, such as novels, short stories, plays and more.

Open Hug (Anoichti Agalia) is a Non-Profit Organisation housed in the Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou General Children’s

Coal on canvas 180 x 84 cm.

Thassos Branch (733)

he depiction of nature, with references to plants and animals, was the trigger for Annita Argyroiliopoulou’s artwork.

The artist handles nature’s standards with diversity, but always with great sensitivity, in order to produce abstract

compositions that take one by surprise because of the material’s resourceful use and the original concept.

The Tree Trunk, which belongs to the Alpha Bank Art Collection, is part of the works that Argyroiliopoulou presented in

her first solo exhibition in 1993. Apart from paintings, the exhibition had also featured three-dimensional constructions

from wire and other flexible or light materials (wicker, textile, polyester), representing real or imaginary beings that

created a haunting environment.

The distinct, in terms of design, structure, that defines the composition, is undoubtedly a pleasant surprise in the Tree Trunk.

The coal’s roughness is not used to impress and it is not an end in itself; instead, it is used to portray the natural elements

and the emotional turmoil they evoke in the artist. The outline has many purposes; at times accentuated, with shading,

it resembles a painting and adds volume, while elsewhere it is more linear. The alternation between the dense lines and the

white colour of the canvas adds intensity and beat to the entire composition. The shape of the tree, which takes over entirely,

violently even, the painting surface, brings to mind the female body because of its human resemblance. This all predicts

a tendency towards existential exploration, focusing on matters related to the nature of women and fertility, which

Argyroiliopoulou delved into over the next few years.

Frame at the Larissa Branch (300)

uilt on a hill on the right bank of River Pineios, Larissa was the most prominent city in Thessaly, with the first settlers dating back to the Neolithic Age. Larissa was also the home of one of the oldest noble Thessalian families, the Aleuades, who, as a rule, produced the so-called tagoi, the heads of the cities. The city’s great economic growth, which was based on its excellent geographical position and the cultivation of the fertile plain, was also accompanied by a significant cultural growth. From the late 5th and during the first half of the 4th century BC, Larissa’s leading position was seriously challenged by Pherae and Pharsalos, so the Aleuades sought the help of the Boeotians and the Macedonians, who thus became involved in Thessalian affairs. Finally, the region came under the control of Philip II of Macedon. In 196 BC, Larissa became the capital of the re-founded Koinon of Thessaly (Thessalian League).

The Larissa mint, the most important mint in Thessaly, began issuing coins from the early 5th century BC. The iconographic types are associated with nymph Larissa and god Poseidon; in Thessaly, Poseidon was worshipped as a bull and horse. The depiction of the horse on the city’s coins is also related to the famous Thessalian cavalry.

According to Herodotus, when Xerxes invaded Greece along with his troops and headed towards Attica, in 480 BC, he noted the cavalry’ssupremacy while crossing the Thessalian region. Plutarch described the Thessalian cavalry that Alexander the Great had with him duringhis campaign to the East, while it should be noted that even Bucephalus, Alexander the Great’s horse, was also Thessalian.

Founding member of the Commercial Bank of Greece and Member of its first Board of Directors, from 1907 until 1936.

He was born in London on April 17, 1878. He came from the well-known Petrokokkinos family, from the island of Chios, traces

of which can already be found in the 15th century. The family was known for its commercial activity in the largest Greek

communities abroad. His father, Stefanos E. Petrokokkinos, born in Smyrna in 1840, initially became Manager of the acclaimed

commercial firm “Petrokokkinos Brothers” in Calcutta and, from the mid-1870s, in London. Demetrios Petrokokkinos was raised

in London, where he completed his schooling and at the same time was introduced to the commercial activities of his father’s

business. In the early 20th century, the Petrokokkinos family moved to Athens and young Demetrios enrolled at the Athens

University Law School.

His professional career mirrors that of Gregory Empedocles, the founder of the Commercial Bank, who was his relative

by marriage. In 1905, Demetrios Petrokokkinos became a partner at the Banque Empedocles, when it changed from General

to Limited Partnership. At the same time, he was the Manager of the Piraeus Branch, the Bank’s only Branch. In 1907, upon

the establishment of the Commercial Bank, D. Petrokokkinos was elected Member of its first Board of Directors, while

he remained Manager at the Piraeus Branch. In 1925, following the departure of D. Kontoumas, one of the Commercial Bank’s

founding Members, Demetrios Petrokokkinos became Deputy General Manager, hence the closest associate of the head

of the Bank, Gregory Empedocles.

On December 3, 1936, Demetrios Petrokokkinos, suffering from health problems and recovering in Paris, sent a letter of

resignation from the positions of Deputy General Manager and Advisor of the Board of the Commercial Bank. Following his

departure and despite his ongoing health problems, he continued to visit the Bank on a daily basis and offer

“his valuable advice”.

In 1941, following the German invasion of Greece, Demetrios Petrokokkinos, who had British citizenship, settled, together with

Gregory Empedocles, in South Africa, where he spent the rest of his life. He passed away on April 1, 1943, in Cape Town.
