SOME OFT·HE

DRIVERSIN TO DAYSSPEED TRIALS.

Today's event is the eighth in the series of post-war SpeedTrials and the total timed distance is one kilometre. When onerealises that many of the cars will cover that distance in half aminute it is easy to see why these Speed Trials retain theirpopularity.

This year is no exception with over 200 entries, and on goingthrough the list class by class we note that taking sports cars firstwe have in "up to 1100 c.c." that beautifully finished R.W.G.being driven by its owner-constructor Roy Watling-Greenwood,it won its class last year and can be depended upon to be wellplaced again today.

In the 1500 c.c. class we are pleased to welcome Capt. W. H.Bledsoe of the American Air Force in his Porsche saloon, veryquick off the mark, also a newcomer, Clairmonte's Lea Francisengined Special.

The 2500 c.c. class includes many well known names, but inparticular we are glad that it includes Sqn, Ldr, S. G. Greene theone armed driver who holds the class record with a Frazer Nash.In the over 2500 c.c. class competition is very strong with ForrestLycett's Bentley, Goodhew's Darracq, Symondson's Bugattiand many others including "The Voice of them all" PeterCavanagh with his Lagonda.

The supercharged sports cars are divided into two classesnamely up to 2000 c.c. and over 2000 c.c. In the smaller class wefind last years winner D. W. Davis with his re-bodiedM.G. Magnette, whilst in the over 2000 c.c, class the main battlewill undoubtedly be between Parker and Coleman with theJaguara and Jaguette respectively, the Jaguara is now past theexperimental stage and should be able to reverse last years resultwhen it was beaten by the older and smaller Jaguette.

The Bentley Class always provides a fine spectacle and weacknowledge the help and co-operation of the Bentley Drivers Clubin the promotion and pairing of runners in this class.

Page 17: 5th SEPTEMBER, 1953 - storage.googleapis.com · Saturday, 5th September, 1953 Organisedby the Start at 9.30 a.m, and 2 p.m, BRIGHTON & HOVE MOTOR CLUB in conjunction with BRIGHTON

14

Coming to the Racing Car Classes we start with the up to500 c.c. cars, we note that Stuart Lewis Evans is driving Beart'sCooper Norton, a combination of driver and tuner that shouldbe hard to beat. In the 1100 c.c. class it is good to see at leastone surviving sprint special the Djinn in the hands of RupertInstone,

The 1500 c.c. includes the very fast Coopers of Bradnackand Rippon, and Rob Walker's E.R.A. engined Delage getsone of its annual drives down the front when it still gives a goodaccount of itself.

Rob Walker appears again in the 2000 C.c. class in hisConnaught which Tony Rolt usually drives in race meetingssince Rob Walker has an agreement with his wife to drive it instraight sprints only. Leslie Marr is driving his Conn aught socompetition will be keen.

The undoubted attraction in the unlimited class will be thetwo monstrous specials, Ted Lloyd-Jones Kestrel enginedTriangle Flying Saucer, and a newcomer, the Swandean SpitfireSpecial which is powered with a 27 litre supercharged Merlinengine and owned and driven by F. M. Wilcock; both have four-wheel drive. The unlimited class record stands at 23.91 secondsto credit of the former so we may look out for fireworks andthunder of giants as well. The Course record at 23.86 seconds isheld by Raymond Mays with a supercharged E.R.A. Will it bebroken at todays meeting?

The meeting concludes with Vintage racing cars to remindmany spectators of names which were as well known as Ferrari istoday, and last but not least the class for the ladies who may driveracing or sports cars as they wish.

We hope that you will enjoy the programme of todays sprintevents, and we thank spectators and competitors for their interestand support which enables the Brighton and Hove Club to keepalive one of the oldest speed events in the country, and certainlythe best known of its type.

P. FERBRACHE (Enfield) 499 Bartley Ariel-Competed on this Coursefor the first time last year on a similar machine the engine of which istuned by that Internationally famous engineer Mr. L. W. E. GEORGE BROWN (Stevenage) 998 c.c, Vincent-A driver of Nationalrepute in all types of racing events including road, sprint meetings andHill Climbs, and needs no introduction to this course, where he put upthe fastest motor cycle time of the day last year at a speed of 129.4 m.p.h.We look forward to a repetition of this creditable performance today.

G. W. FIELD (Loughton) 998 c.c, Vincent-Although this is the firstoccasion on which Mr. Field has appeared on this course he has competedsuccessfully at the Trent Park Speed Trials. It is understood that he willbe using alcohol fuel, in order to permit a higher compression ratio attoday's event.

Since then he has had further successes at Tent Park,Cirencester and Stapleford Tawney, and it will be most interesting towatch his progress here today against the other two contestants,R. McDONALD who will be riding a 499 c.c , Nonon/Watsonian andW. M. RAPER mounted on a 998 Vincent H.R.D.
