CONFESSIONS After 10am and 7.30pm
Masses on Saturdays.
Closed Minds Hands up …. did your older brothers and
sisters try to teach you things as a child
only to be met with protests, scoffs and
yawns? It was only when your parents
stepped in and paid up front for an
expensive tutor that you would finally sit
up and pay attention. It seems that we
disregard as unimportant what is right
under our noses. The next-door neighbour
might speak words of great wisdom to us
over the garden fence, but unless the
same words were boomed at us from a
cloud or a mountaintop we would barely
heed them. The old adage that ‘familiarity
breeds contempt’ is certainly a true one.
When Jesus returned to his hometown to
preach, he was treated with similar disregard. When the Nazarenes
heard him speaking they could not take him seriously because they
could remember all too well his humble origins. Wasn’t he just a
carpenter … Mary’s son? They closed their minds against Jesus, and
because their minds were closed, Jesus could not work any great deed
that day. Of course, there is more to this story than Jesus being rejected
in his hometown. This is a story about how we too can ignore or reject
God. This is a story about the stumbling blocks we encounter in our
faith. Perhaps our pet stumbling block might be our unwillingness to
listen to others in the belief that we know best. Our stumbling block
might be a reluctance to ask for help, fearing that this might be a sign of
weakness. Our stumbling block might be the inability to recognise the
voice of God in our day-to-day surroundings. Could God be talking to us
through a partner, through our children, parents or friends?
Where will the next prophet come from, the other side of the
globe or the other side of the street? The trick is, not to rule
anything out. God is less likely to work wonders in a closed mind.
Jesus people What commandments are we to obey? Not just the Ten Commandments, which are not strictly speaking from Jesus, but much more the calls and challenges of Jesus in the Gospel: - To be a people which constantly studies and tries to understand and appropriate more deeply the Word of God, especially in the New Testament. It was only after they understood the Scriptures that the disciples were able to understand what the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus really meant. - To love all people unconditionally, including enemies and those who hate and harm us. To love them is to wish that God's love may penetrate their hardened hearts.

Two priests died at the same time and met Saint Peter at the
Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, “I’d like to let you guys in now,
but our computer’s down. You’ll have to go back to Earth for
about a week, but you can’t go back as priests. What’ll it be?”
The first priest says, “I’ve always wanted to be an eagle,
soaring above the Rocky Mountains.” “So be it,” says St.
Peter, and off flies the first priest. The second priest mulls this
over for a moment and asks, “Will any of this week ‘count’,
St. Peter?” “No, I told you the computer’s down. There’s no
way we can keep track of what you’re doing.” “In that case,”
says the second priest, “I’ve always wanted to be a stud.” “So
be it” says St. Peter, and the second priest disappears. A week
goes by, the computer is fixed, and the Lord tells St. Peter
to recall the two priests. “Will
you have any trouble locating them?”
He asks. “The first one should be
easy,” says St. Peter. “He’s
somewhere over the Rockies, flying
with the eagles. But the second one
could prove to be more difficult.”
“Why?” asked the Lord. “He’s on a

Breast Check is a free health service funded by the Government which offers women aged 50-64 years a free breast x-ray (mammogram) every 2 years. From mid July until the end of 2009, Breast Check will be inviting women living in Co. Laois for their free mammograms. Breast Check urges all invited women to make time to attend their appointment. A Breast Check x-ray is a simple procedure that takes approximately half an hour. The aim of Breast Check is to reduce deaths from breast cancer by finding and treating the disease at an early stage. If you are a woman aged 50-64 years living in Co. Laois, you will be sent a letter in the coming months inviting you for your Breast Check appointment on a particular date and time. If the date or time doesn’t suit it can be changed by calling the number on the letter. Pope Benedict's Prayer Intention for
July 2009 The Middle East is the birthplace of Christianity and home to some of the world's most ancient Christian denominations.
But Christian communities across the region are declining in numbers because of a combination of low birth rates, emigration and, in some places, persecution. Christians find themselves in a minority, and as such, can face discrimination. They can also struggle to maintain their identity as part of an overwhelmingly Muslim population group. This month we are invited to join in Pope Benedict's prayer intention, "...That the Christians of the Middle East may live their faith in full freedom and be an instrument of peace and reconciliation."
