Fifth graders were tasked with doing some online research!  Students were provided with a link to a new website for kids to explore and evaluate.  After spending time on each site, students were given an opportunity to provide a review. Some of these websites could be used next year thanks to the students reviews and opinions!

MUSIC FROM: MS. MARIE MEALER

During the school building closure, the 5th graders were still able to get creative and bring the music making into their homes. During our 1st week of music lessons,

students explored how to use plastic cups to create rhythmic patterns. We quickly realized these rhythm patterns could be easy or range to very complex. After learning two different sequences, we explored the different sounds a simple everyday item like a cup could make, and turned those possibilities into their very own rhythmic pattern to play along to their favorite songs. During the 2nd week of music lessons we leveled up from a plastic cup to a full blown drum set! Using ideas found around the house, we built working drum sets and practiced a simple back beat. It just goes to how with an open mind and a little creativity, the music making possibilities are endless no matter where you are!

STEAM FROM: MS. MELISSA LEPOARD

Our concentration for the two weeks in STEAM distant learning was Natural Disasters. Students examined both tornadoes and hurricanes across the United States. We started our unit understanding cloud formations in relationship to tornadoes. Students then moved on to analyzing geographies' role in tornadoes. We researched tornado alley, identified supercell storms, and used data to tell the story of climate change and the connection to more severe natural disasters.  The final project was to create their own earthquake shake table for home use. Excellent work fifth graders.

DANCE and THEATRE FROM: MS. DEBORAH LIPA-CIOTTA and MS. TERRA BAILY

This spring, Dance and Theatre collaborated to help our students examine how artists interpret and reflect on historical events. The students were introduced to a variety of performance artists who are using dance, music, and poetry to express how they feel about current events, particularly the COVID 19 pandemic. Each day students were able to view a performance and reflect on what they saw. Students created an “I AM” poem to express how the see themselves in this moment of their lives. As a final project each student was given the option of using dance, poetry, or a combination to reflect how they are living through the pandemic. The final projects were deep, thoughtful, and moving expressions of how these young people see the world we are living in.
