    1910June 15 RobertF. Scott's ship,the Terra Nova,sets sail fromCardi, England,with a crew of 65

    men

    Nov 29 Terra Novaleaves New Zealand,

    where it picked upadditional cargo including 34dogs, 19 Siberian ponies andthree motorized sledges. It is hitby a heavy storm and loses someof its cargo.

    Dec 10 The ship encounterspacked ice barricading the wayto Ross Sea and is halted for 20days.

    1911Jan 4 Arrive at Ross Island.

    Jan 27 12 men, eight poniesand two dog teams set out to laydepots for use on the polarjourney which would begin thefollowing spring

    Feb 17 The last depot (One TonDepot) is laid 50 km short of itsintended destination due to poorhealth of the ponies.

    Oct 24 The first team sets outwith two motor sledges but thesledges break down, so the men

    haul supplies.Nov 1 Scott and another teamsets out with ponies and dogs.

    1912Jan 3 Scott chooses four mento continue with him to the Poleand instructs the others toreturn.

    Jan 6 Cross the line of latitudewhere a previous explorer, SirErnest Henry Shackleton, turnedback and were farther south, asthey believed, than any man hadbeen before.

    Jan 17 Scott and his teamarrive at the pole, 33 days afterRoald Amundsen's Norwegianexpedition. Oates, Evans andBowers all suered from severefrostbite. Scott wrote, GreatGod! This is an awful place andterrible enough for us to havelaboured to it without the rewardof priority.

    Journey to the South PoleJan. 19 The team heads home.Jan 23 The men were becoming very tired,and suering from injuries: Wilson waslimping with a pulled leg; Scott fell andbruised his shoulder; Evans hand lost twofingernails.

    Feb 7 Reached the head of the BeardmoreGlacier.

    Feb 8 Started their descent.Feb 11 Became disoriented after a wrongturn; were traveling around in a maze ofridges, growing weaker as their food rationsdwindles,

    Feb 17 Evans dies.

    Mar 3 Arrived at the Southern Barrierdepot. Temperature was down to -40 C.Oates was immense pain; his toes wereblack and gangrene was setting in.

    Mar 16/17 Conditions deteriorate;Temperature fell to -41 C, raging blizzard.Wilson was too weak to help make camp.

    Oates dies.Mar 20 They were only 17 km from OneTon Depot but the blizzard stopped themfrom continuing on. Have decided it shallbe naturalwe shall march for the depotand die in our tracks", wrote Scott.

    Mar 29 They did not march again and onMarch 29 Scott made his last entry: Itseems a pity, but I do not think that I canwrite more. R. Scott. For God's sake lookafter our people.

    Nov 12 A search party finds the bodies ofBowers, Wilson and Scott just 18 km fromOne Ton Depot. Also found were rolls of film,

    a meteorological log and 16 kg of fossils.
