Target: New Vertical Sectors5G adds slicing, NR and other key technologies that allow specific service level requirements to be supported. Where EPS was ‘one size fits all’, 5GS is diverse

“Vertical Industries”

3GPP standards have long sought to broaden the business prospects of mobile broadband.• Broadcasting (Rel‐9), IoT (Rel‐10), V2X (Rel‐13), Critical Communications (Rel‐11).

5G Broadcast & Multicast

There are several aspects to Broadcast & Multicast in 3GPP:• RAN standards – specified for LTE, not yet for NR.• Architecture – specified for EPC, not yet for 5GC. • Interfaces – specified for EPS, not yet 5GC.• Media / Services – specified for EPS, suffices for 5GS?

There is interest in all these areas though… • Rel‐16 will focus on ‘new sectors’ (eV2X, Industrial (‘ultra reliable, low latency’

services, FMC), support of accesses – CIoT, satellite), enhancement of the base 5GS and its support of existing services.

• Note that NR support for broadcast will be essential for many of these.

Therefore: MBMS features are more likely after 2019.

3GPP Status Overview

Rel‐14 is fully frozen and in maintenance.Rel‐15 (5G phase 1 release)• Stage 1 and 2 have frozen. Maintenance relents already (not fully dominating the work.)• Stage 3 freeze approaches soon – this is an immense effort in most working groups.

Rel‐16 (5G phase 2 release)• Stage 1 studies and work items are completing.• Stage 2 studies have begun and progress well.
