0or most, prepositions can be one of the most difficult challenges in learning and using

!nglish. $he following are ways to help you describe location with prepositions,

    specifically places.

. Cities, counties, bordered areas, countries, and geographical regions = in

1ark lives in$aipei County, which is located in$aiwan, a small island country in7sia.

. "pecific places, such as $aipei :, the supermarket, your best friend-s house = at

e went sightseeing at$aipei :, then bought some things atthe supermarket, and haddinner atmy friend-s house.

. $he preposition atis used most of the time, whereas in(unless used with cities,

countries, etc.) more specifically means 5inside.6'-m meeting my colleague atthe movie theatre, but ' don-t know where he wants to meet.

+e might be waiting inthe theatre lobby, or outside the ticket booth.

    4. hen referring to rooms inside a building (office, house, apartment, etc.), inis alwaysused as these places are inside.

    ,Brea the Habit

' recently asked my co?workers about their bad habits. $wo people said they smoke.$hey both know it is bad for their health, and they both have tried to quit before.

1any people said they procrastinated. !veryone agrees that putting off a project causesstress, and each of them promised themselves they would never do it again, but all of

them said it is impossible to change. 3ne woman said her bad habit is biting her nails.

"he said she has been doing it for a long time, but recently she purchased a product tohelp her break the habit. 7nother admitted to cracking his knuckles. $he last women

' wished everyone good luck in quitting, but many of the people have given up hope in

ever quitting their bad habits. #oes this sound like you* #o you have a bad habit that you

want to break* 's there an annoying thing you wish you could quit doing*

+ere-s help@ $he first step in breaking a bad habit is to find out why you enjoy this

behavior so much. 'n other words, why are you doing something that you think isnegative* Asually you do something bad because it makes you feel better. $he two

smokers said that smoking helps them rela. $hey might feel better for a moment, but

their bad habit will cause them many problems in the future. Bet, think about why yourbad habit is bad. $he reason you formed the habit is because it filled a need for you.

7s you break the old pattern, you will still need to do something to feel better. >ou will

have to make the choice to not do the old action, and make the choice to perform apositive action instead. 'nstead of lighting a cigarette, or biting your nails to feel relaed,

try something else such as going for a walk, eating a piece of fruit, or chewing gum.

hatever the new behavior is isn-t as important as whether you feel good about the

choices you have made. 7fter all, the reason you consider it a bad habit is because itleaves you feeling badly about yourself.

    /. 0eading

hat bad habits get on your nerves* hat-s annoying to you* hat are you fed upwith* hat types of behavior make you look down on someone* 's there anyone in your

life that you consider to be a pain in the neck* 't turns out that everyone has his or her

own pet peeveslittle things that we consider to be disrespectful, impolite, rude,

insulting, grossthat often make us feel uncomfortable or offended. "ee how many ofthese you have.

"ome common habits that irritate people are burping, belching, and fartingD biting orlicking one-s fingersD cutting in lineD talking while one-s mouth is full of foodD nose?

pickingD spittingD smokingD and a lack of personal hygiene. 3ther bothersome things

include complaining too much, having a negative attitude, ignoring 5commoncourtesies,6 being loud, being messy, and having bad manners.

"ometimes some things are easy to ignore, and at others these habits might bother us to

the point where we get distracted, irritated, or even angry. e might resort to givingsomeone the evil eye, a dirty look, complaining about his or her disgusting habits, and

maybe even yelling insults at the person.

1any times the things that bother us are things that people do. +owever, there are a fair

number of annoying things that occur around us that we can-t blame on others. "uch

things as being stuck in traffic and annoying insects might drive you as craEy, if notmore, than the things other people around you are doing.

$he most difficult part of tackling these problems is that habits are often individual.

"ometimes they-re cultural. "ometimes people have bad habits that they aren-t even

aware of, or unknowing in that those things bother others around them. orst of all,

quitting or breaking a habit is not always easy to do.

    >ou-ve probably heard the phrases 5#o unto others;6 or 5ould you say/do that if your

mother were in the room*6. hile we can-t please everybody all the time, some things

are just downright disgusting, and should be done in private. 7nd yet, maybe sometimeswe all need to lighten up and accept our differences. hat do you think*

them from most to least annoying.

2ole play@ 'n pairs or small groups students act out a situation in which one student does

something rude or annoying and the other student politely asks him or her to stop.6 "ome

eamples include talking during a movie, not giving up your seat to an older person or

pregnant woman, or having bad table manners.
