The 89650S combines one of Agilent’shigh performance PSA Series of spectrum analyzers with the advanced89601A vector signal analysis software,running on your PC. This packageprovides you with one of the mostadvanced vector signal analysis capabilities on the market today.

PSA Series high performancespectrum analyzer

The PSA Series of high performancespectrum analyzers offers theremarkable dynamic range, speed,accuracy, and flexibility you expect in an Agilent spectrum analyzer. An all-digital IF section gives the PSASeries the performance required tomake advanced spectrum measure-ments both in a traditional swept modeor with fast fourier transforms (FFT).

Choose from one of three models tomeet your signal analysis frequencyband needs:

• E4443A 20 MHz to 6.7 GHz• E4445A 20 MHz to 13.2 GHz• E4440A 20 MHz to 26.5 GHz

In addition, as part of the 89650S, the PSA spectrum analyzer comesequipped with your choice of an 80 MHz bandwidth IF or a 40 MHzbandwidth IF, offering the best combination of analysis bandwidthand dynamic range on the markettoday. Choose the combination youneed to capture and analyze 72 MHzwide satellite transponder signals, 18 MHz wide WLAN signals, 60 MHzfor multiple channels, plus distortioncomponents of W-CDMA signals andmore. No matter the bandwidth, you are assured the dynamic range,phase and amplitude flatness, andaccuracy and flexibility you need foryour most advanced signal evaluation and troubleshooting.

A suite of measurement personalitiesspeeds the analysis of complicatedsignals. Measure phase noise or noisefigure quickly and easily with the phase noise or noise figure measurement personalities. Performpower and digital modulation measurements on a variety of standard 2G and 3G digital cellularcommunications formats with the standards-based digital communications measurement personalities.

Advanced Signal AnalysisSoftware

The modulation analysis engine in the 89650S is the PC based 89601Avector signal analysis (VSA) software.For engineers working with today’semerging broadband communicationsystems, Agilent’s 89601A VSA software is an indispensable tool forbasic research, product development,manufacturing troubleshooting, andfield-testing.

Evaluate digital and analog modulatedsignals in detail. Analyze widebandand narrow band signals with equalease. The 89601A VSA software used in the 89650S teams advanceddemodulation algorithms with highly flexible scalar and vectoranalysis tools to help you develop,troubleshoot, and verify the physicallayer performance of your radio system.

Advanced digital demodulators

This VSA software offers a wide range of digital demodulators. Theseadvanced technology demodulatorsdo not require external filtering,coherent carrier signals, or symbol-clock timing signals to successfullydemodulate a signal.

Precise analog demodulation

Characterize amplitude, frequency,and phase modulated signals in thefrequency and time domains with the analog demodulation capabilitiesof the 89601A VSA software.

Use analog demodulation to analyzeunintentionally as well as intentionallymodulated signals. For example, useFM and PM demodulation to examinephase and frequency trajectories during frequency hops or to establishthe phase-lock-loop lock-up time ofoscillators and synthesizers.

High performance vector analysis tools

Analyze the time, frequency, andamplitude domain behavior of yoursignal with one of the most completesets of vector analysis tools on themarket today.

Use the time tools to measure thewidth and observe the shape of your TDMA signals. These tools areparticularly useful for setting the trigger level, hold-off, and delay onyour pulsed signals. Use the TimeGate capability to select a portion of your signal, such as the preamble,for spectrum analysis.

Use the spectrum tools to measurethe center frequency and bandwidthof your signal, find spurs, measuresignal power, and more. A completeset of marker functions complementthe spectrum display.

Measure peak to average power ratioand more with the complementarycumulative distribution function(CCDF), probability distribution function (PDF), and cumulative distribution function (CDF) tools provided in Agilent’s VSA software.

Display format and scaling

Scale your display the way you want,with the units you need. Select from a complete list of formats includinglog and linear displays of the signalmagnitude, displays of only the real(I) or imaginary (Q) part of the signal,vector and constellation displays, eye displays, trellis displays, andgroup delay.

Spectrogram display

Take advantage of the spectrogramdisplay to view the behavior of your signal over time. This three-dimensional display is noted for its ability to track the frequency and amplitude behavior of signals,particularly those with poor signal-to-noise ratio and frequencyhopping signals. It also allows you toprecisely determine the timingbetween signal events with markers.

Flexible modulation analysis (Option 89601A-AYA)

Whether you are designing to a mainstream standard, a secondarystandard, an emerging standard or aproprietary specification, the 89601AVSA flexible modulation analysisOption AYA has the tools you need to evaluate and characterize signalperformance. It helps you uncover the root of modulation problems.

This flexible analysis package demodulates a wide range of singlecarrier signal types both continuousand pulsed (TDMA and radar).Demodulators range from 2FSK to16FSK, BPSK to EDGE, 16QAM to1024QAM, APSK, and more. They are supported by a wide range of programmable filters.

Adaptive equalization

Evaluate and troubleshoot your 3Gmodulated wireless communicationssignals with multiple 3G modulationanalysis options. WLAN modulation analysis (Option 89601A-B7R)

Agilent is an industry leader inWLAN signal analysis. The WLANanalysis option available with the89650S offers:

• IEEE 802.11a OFDM modulation analysis

• IEEE 802.11b DSSS/CCK/PBCC modulation analysis

• IEEE 802.11g modulation analysis• IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards-based

testing

HiperLAN2 compatible signals withthe OFDM modulation analysis modeprovided in Option B7R. This highperformance capability supportsdemodulating OFDM bursts down to the bit level.

Use the compound constellation display to automatically determineand display all modulation formatspresent in the burst.

Evaluate modulation quality usingEVM displays of the overall burst, ofeach symbol, or of each sub-carrier in a symbol. View all of this data in an efficient graphical display thatreveals overall patterns in the EVM –a key to finding the root cause of signaling problems.

View the average phase and magnitudebehavior of the pilot sub-carriersusing the Common Pilot Error display.

Measure the magnitude and phasesettling of the OFDM burst using thepreamble error display.

These features and more, provide you a powerful package for analyzingand troubleshooting OFDM signals.

IEEE 802.11a/b/g test suite

Speed the process of testing yourIEEE 802.11a/b/g signal to its standard with the WLAN test suite(supplied as part of the WLAN analysis Option B7R). This separateapplet automatically executes standards-based transmitter tests of your signal. You specify the tests toperform, set the center frequency andother signal parameters, and the applet does the rest.

IEEE 802.11n MIMO modulation analysis(Option 89601A-B7Z)

The 89650S with Option B7Z performssingle-channel demodulation of IEEE802.11n MIMO signals. Even thoughIEEE 802.11n signals are inherentlymulti-channel, useful measurementscan be made when there is a singlespatial stream, or when the signaluses Direct Map basic MIMO.

The 89650S can demodulate either 20 MHz or 40 MHz signals. The softwarecan demodulate BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM,64QAM or 256QAM data sub-carriermodulation formats.

IEEE 802.11b modulation analysis

Select the DSSS/CCK/PBCC modeand automatically detect, de-spread,descramble, and demodulate the payload in all four mandatoryIEEE 802.11b formats (1, 2, 5.5, 11 Mbps). This mode handles the optional PBCC modes, theoptional short preamble, and theCCK preamble of the CCK-OFDM format in IEEE 802.11g.

Analyzing OFDM signals requiresdevelopers to think in the time andfrequency domains simultaneously.You need OFDM-specific signal analysis tools to help you manipulateand break down the signal in orderto effectively troubleshoot the situation. The 89600 vector signalanalysis software helps you do thisquickly and efficiently.

Comprehensive IEEE 802.16-2004 signal analysis

Option B7S provides comprehensivecoverage of the IEEE 802.16-2004standard:

• All IEEE 802.16-2004 modulation formats, including BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM, and 64QAM

• TDD, FDD, and H-FDD• Uplink and downlink• Bursted and continuous• All frame lengths, guard intervals,

and sampling factors• Demodulation down to the raw bit

level

In addition, the software allows youto set up and adjust the demodulatorfor the best analysis of your signal:

• Automatically detect the signal modulation type on sub-carriers, or you can manually override the auto-detect feature for specific troubleshooting needs

• Manually adjust the nominal signal bandwidth, guard interval, and sampling factor (Fs/BW ratio) (standard guard interval and sampling factors are provided)

• Adjust carrier pilot tracking to track amplitude, phase, or timing and identify errors that automatic pilot tracking can hide (these errors can cause you to inadver-tently lower design margins)

• Verify your signal setup using the burst information provided —a text table conveniently shows burst power, modulation format, burst symbol length, and EVM

OFDM- and IEEE 802.16-2004-specific measurements

New measurements specifically forOFDM and more specifically for IEEE 802.16-2004 signals include:

• Relative constellation error (RCE) in % or dB

• RCE vs. symbol number• RCE vs. sub carrier number• Equalizer frequency and impulse

response• Error vector spectrum/time,

including RMS error vector• Quadrature skew, gain imbalance,

I-Q offset• Frequency error• Symbol clock error• Common Pilot Error (CPE)

In addition, these tools let you analyze your signal selectively bytime or frequency for troubleshootingand uncovering problems that you’venever been able to see before.

For instance, with the demodulationoff, use time gating markers to analyze the desired portions of thetime trace or spectrum of the signal,e.g., the short training signal, signalestimation sequences, signal symbol,etc. You can apply many other measurements to the time-gatedarea. This is especially useful whenmaking measurements like peak toaverage power, when you may wantto measure only the data portion ofthe burst, since including the timingand estimation sequences can biasthe value lower.

IEEE 802.16 OFDMA ModulationAnalysis (Option B7Y)

Agilent's IEEE 802.16 OFDMA modulation analysis capabilities arecomprehensive. Option B7Y coversPUSC, OPUSC, FUSC, OFUSC, andAMC zone types, plus handles uplinkand downlink forms. This option covers all bandwidths from 1.25 MHzthrough 28 MHz and covers all FFTsizes from 128 to 2048. Early versionsof the standard as well as the ratifiedversion of the standard can also bemeasured.

PRBS status indicator

Pseudo random sequences determinecarrier and pilot position. If the receiversees the wrong PRBS, it cannotdemodulate the signal. If the Agilent89600 VSA software detects the wrongPRBS, it automatically determinesthe signal's actual PRBS, displays itand demodulates the signal. Whereother analyzers typically stop, the89600 VSA software continues towork, providing the data you need to fix the problem.

Synch correlation

The preamble is crucial to successfulOFDMA demodulation. Other analyzersdo not offer a preamble pattern check.Agilent's OFDMA modulation analysisoption offers the synch correlation (SyncCorr) indicator in the symbol/errortable. This indicator compares thepreamble's actual pattern to thepattern called out by the standard;low correlation indicates a problem in the pattern. Unlike other analyzers,Agilent's VSA software offers usefultroubleshooting information on thephysical layer structure even if it cannot successfully demodulate the signal.

Measurements that work togetherAgilent's OFDMA tools work together tosimplify the complex analysis challengepresented by mobile WiMAX.

Measurement results are color codedby data burst, where appropriate. Youcan look at the compound constellationof a multi-burst data zone and tell ata glance if your data bursts are usingthe modulations you programmed. Youcan go the error vector time displayand easily determine which data burstan EVM spike belongs to. The sameworks with the error vector spectrumdisplay.
