Welcome to the 58th RRCA National Convention and Dallas, Texas, the ninth-largest city in thenation. The RRCA’s mission is to champion the development of community-based runningclubs and events that serve runners of all ages and abilities in pursuit of health and competition.

The information and ideas shared during the RRCA Convention are a driving force behind achieving ourorganization’s mission as attendees return home to implement these best practices to elevate the sport ofrunning.

Our education program is designed to provide valuable information to club leaders, event directors, coaches, and more. Our speakers are leaders and experts in our sport, and we thank them for being animportant part of the RRCA Convention. We also thank our convention sponsors and expo participants.Their support of the RRCA Convention is very much appreciated, and we couldn’t host this great eventwithout them. We encourage all of our attendees to utilize the goods and services provided by our sponsorsand expo venders throughout the year. We extend a big thank you to our host, the Dallas Running Club.

In addition, we would like to offer our congratulations to the 2015 National Running Award winnersand 2016 RRCA Hall of Fame inductees. We look forward to honoring these champions of running at theNational Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner on Saturday. As part of the evening’s event, we hope thatyou will support both the Live and Silent Auctions by outbidding your fellow attendees. Proceeds fromboth auctions support RRCA programs, including the Annual Program Fund, Roads Scholar Fund, andKids Run the Nation Fund.

Throughout the weekend, please take time to thank the members of the Dallas running communityfor volunteering at the RRCA National Convention. Please take every opportunity to talk with attendeesabout their clubs, events, and programs. We know you will learn something new that you can take backto your organization. On behalf of the Road Runners Club of America, we thank you for your continuedsupport and involvement in the oldest and largest distance running organization in the United States.

• Attend your Regional Meeting on Thursday before the Opening Reception. This is a great opportunity to meet other members from your area and make new friends. • The Convention is designed to give you the tools to better govern your running club, direct your events, and coach your runners. Be sure to attend education sessions of interest/need for your organization.• Don’t be shy! Many attendees will gravitate towards those they already know and haven’t seen in a year but everyone is friendly and welcoming – even if you have to be the first to say “Hi.” Definitely introduce yourself to RRCA staff and Board members, but keep in mind they are very busy during the event, and ideas or questions, comments, concerns may be best saved for a post‐convention email.

Dallas is a Runner Friendly Community and thedowntown area is highly walkable. We’ve high‐lighted key locations including our Host Hotels,Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas Half Marathon Expo location, and race start location.

• Always wear your name badge to ensure access to all convention functions. Keep your drink tickets and schedule in the lanyard pocket provided for easy access. • Attend the Annual Meeting of the Membership to see good governance in action and participate in the Board elections.• Take time to talk to all of the expo vendors to learn about their products and services. We could not host the Convention without their support. Please be sure to thank them.• Read the RRCA’s 2015 Annual Report to learn about the great things accomplished last year.• Tweet or Instagram from the Convention using the hashtag #RRCAConvention and/or @RRCANational. Share photos or video snippets on Facebook.• Participate in the Live & Silent Auctions to support RRCA programs. Silent Auction items have a minimum bid amount listed. It’s in poor

form to undercut the minimum bid amount. Remember the auction is a fundraiser for the RRCA. Bid high and bid often.• Have a great time .cand be sure to talk about what you learned when you go back to your home club or event meetings. Encourage attendance in the 59th Annual RRCA Convention in 2017!

GILBERT TUHABONYE Whoever said you can’t run until you learn to walk has never met Gilbert.Gilbert grew up in East Africa, running barefoot to fetch water, racing hisfriends and chasing cows on his family farm through the Burundian coun‐tryside. By his junior year in high school he had become the 400 and 800meter national champion. Running was his life. After becoming one ofmany victims of the horrific Burundian Civil War, running saved his life —literally. Gilbert was burned, tortured and witnessed mass genocide, andhe miraculously survived. After coming to the United States as part of anOlympic Development Program in 1996, Gilbert pursued a college degreewhere he was a national collegiate champion, followed by a career as aprofessional runner and, eventually, a highly successful coach. Gilbert’sextraordinary life experiences, unwavering spirit, and genuine compas‐sion for others make him a fascinating and entertaining motivationalspeaker.
