Baptisms: Arrangements must be made by parents through the Rectory Office to schedule baptisms and arrange for Pre-Baptism classes. All parents expecting to baptize their first child are to attend Pre-Baptism classes.

ВОЛОНТЕРИ ПІД ЧАС РИБНИХ ОБІДІВ

Парафіяльний проект "Рибні Обіди" - один з найбільших

проектів року, який розпочнеться під час Великого посту,

кожної п’ятниці, починаючи з 3 березня від 4-ої години до

7:00 вечора, під час якого ми можемо укріпити фінансове

становище парафії. Сотні людей звідусіль приходять до

нас кожного року під час обідів, люблячи нашу смачну

кухню, широкий простір у залі і так далі. Наші "Рибні

Обіди" мають добру славу серед людей і це спричинює

більший дохід кожного року, але щоб обслужити всіх

людей потрібно більше праці і наших рук. Багато з вас

допомагали своїй парафії і продовжують це робити вже

багато років. Запрошуємо всіх без винятку прийти і

допомогти нам цього року. Спитаймо себе, якщо не я, тоді

хто має це робити. Нашої роботи за нас ніхто не може

зробити. Під час Великопосного часу практикуймо

милосердя, допоможімо тим, хто є у великій потребі.

Прийдімо, хоч би на короткий час. Будь ласка, вписуйте

свої імена в лист волонтерів, що знаходиться в вестибюлі. ПЕЧИВО ДЛЯ РИБНИХ ОБІДІВ

Складовою рибних обідів є печиво. Тому знову, як і

минулого року просимо Вас, дорогі наші жінки, пекти

ваше улюблене печиво і приносити до початку рибних

швидкопсувні, консервовані продукти, макарони,

перелік продуктів буде розміщений на коробці. Ви

можете залишити ваші пожертви в коробках, що

знаходяться в притворі нашого собору або в

парафіяльному офісі. Пам’ятаймо, що бідний Лазар завжди стоїть при воротах

нашого дому, подібно як це описано в євангельській

притчі. Відкриймо, отже, наші серця йому і проявімо йому

Божу любов і милість, якщо не спільною дією Церкви, то

приховано й непомітно для людей, щоб нас могли

стосуватися слова Господні: «Прийдіть, благословенні

Отця Мого, візьміть у спадщину Царство, що було

приготоване вам від створення світу. Бо Я голодував, і ви

дали Мені їсти; мав спрагу, і ви Мене напоїли; чужинцем

PILGRIMAGE

On Saturday, May 6, 2017 there will be a pilgrimage to The

Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, OH (4106 State Route

269 Bellevue Ohio), which is located 66 miles west of Cleve-

land. It is one of the oldest pilgrimage shrines in the Midwest,

founded in 1850 and dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother of

SERV ING ONE’S NEIGHBOR - DIAKONIA

Dear Parishioners,

Each and every one of us from our first moment of becoming

Christian received a special mandate to serve our neighbor

(Diakonia), even if most of us do not remember that moment,

because we were infants. In fact, towards the end of the

Baptismal Service the priest handed us a lighted candle, saying

these words: “Take this lighted candle, and strive throughout

your entire lifetime to shine brightly with the light of faith and

of good deeds, so that when the Lord will come, you may go

forth in radiance to meet Him together with all the Saints, and

may enter unhindered into the court of His heavenly glory and

reign with Him throughout eternity. Amen.” In our Spiritual journey to Pascha we strive to become closer to

God by worship, prayer, fasting and acts of charity. We want to give

you the opportunity to show an act of charity here at our parish. This year we are reaching out to the local hunger center by

donating non-perishable food and other items. PLEASE HELP

US with this project by donating items for the hunger center.

Beginning the 1st week of Great Fast, we will accept non-

perishable food. You can drop your donations in the boxes which

will be located in the church vestibule or at the rectory office.

There will be a listing by the boxes with some ideas of items you

can donate. During this time of Great Lent and beyond, let us strive, as

individuals and our parish community, through our loving service

as God’s instruments for good, to always be signs of His loving

presence in our world. WORLD MARRIAGE DAY

Every year in February we celebrate the World Marriage Day

(Sunday, February 12) and the National Marriage Week

(February 7-14). This is an opportunity to promote, celebrate

and strengthen marriage. Saint Josaphat Eparchy is celebrating

the gift and blessing of marriage and supports engaged and

married couples.

“The word of God tells us that the family is entrusted to a man,

a woman and their children, so that they may become a

communion of persons in the image of the union of the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

FISH FRY PROJECT—VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

This year again we will be holding a Fish Fry every Friday

during the Great Fast (Lent) beginning on March 3rd from

4:00PM until 7:30PM. Mark your calendars and bring your

families and friends to enjoy delicious meals and fellowship

while supporting your parish. A VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP SHEET IS IN THE CHURCH

VESTIBULE TODAY. Please stop and sign-up to help your

parish. Our Fish Fry Project is one of the largest fundraising projects of

the year. This is a very successful project. Every year we have

hundreds of people coming every Friday to enjoy our delicious

fish dinner. Our fish fry has acquired a good reputation in the

community and it grows every year. That requires more work

and workers. Many of you have been helping us faithfully for

many years, and we are grateful for your help and dedication.

We invite you to come and help us again this year.

Recollection, as understood in respect to the spiritual life,

means attention to the presence of God in the soul. It includes

the withdrawal of the mind from external and earthly affairs in

order to attend to God and Divine things. It is the same as

interior solitude in which the soul is alone with God.

A Mission retreat refreshes and revitalizes, gives the

opportunity for more time spent in prayer and contemplation,

and rekindles and deepens one’s relationship with God. One

may take this opportunity to more clearly hear God’s call and

to seek God’s healing grace and thereby attain a degree of

spiritual renewal. COMMEMORATION OF THE DECEASED:

SOROKOUSTY

On Saturdays during the Great Fast (Lent), we pray for all

those who have fallen asleep in the Lord. If you would like to

request that your departed loved ones be remembered by name

during the services, special envelopes are available on the table

in the Cathedral vestibule. If you had already given the names

last year, there is no need to write all the names on the envelope

since we have the lists from last year. If all the names are the

same, please print “SAME AS LAST YEAR” and add any

additional names you wish. Please print your name at the

bottom of the envelope. You may drop the envelopes in the

collection basket or bring them to the rectory office no later

than Thursday, March 2, 2017.

ALMSGIVING. Please, come and offer a few hours of your

time to support our Fish Fry Project. FISH FRY BAKERY NEEDED

We rely on your help to make our Fish Fry a successful event.

Bakery will be needed for each Friday’s Fish Fry. We ask the

ladies again to bake and deliver their bakery donations to the

Astrodome each Friday prior to the beginning of the Fish Fry.

Last year you were very generous and the bakery, as always,

was delicious. CATECHESIS CLASSES FOR FIRST CONFESSION

Catechesis classes for First Confession, led by Mrs. Oksana

Kozak, will be held every Friday during the month of March,

КАТЕХЕТИЧНА ПРОПОВІДЬ ПРО БОЖЕСТВЕННУ ЛІТУРГІЮ

# 2 ПЕРЕД ПІДНЯТТЯМ ЗАВІСИ - ПРОСКОМИДІЯ

Запрошуючи гостей додому, ми, звичайно, кажемо їм, на що саме їх запрошено: “на каву” або на обід, на

вечерю або на більше свято, зокрема, день народження. Іноді додаткова подія також має місце, “приходьте на

обід, і після цього ви зможете побачити наше весільне відео,” або прийдіть на обід, і ми можемо після цього

пограти в Scrabble. Очевидно, що нам доведеться підготуватися відповідно до прийняття гостей, зайнятися

купівлею продуктів у магазинах, приготувати страви та придбати напитки. Божественна Літургія не є просто Господньою Вечерею, це бенкет. Бенкет, звичайно, включає в себе

промови чи тости. Святкові страви, звичайно, подаються відповідно до сформованої традиції місцевої або

етнічної спільноти. Барбекю – це найбільш неформальний бенкет, а весілля, як правило, є найбільш

формальний, але всі ці події не мають строгих правил щодо їх організації, адже кожен може внести якісь зміни

щодо їх проведення. Термін Божественна Літургія означає “побожна та свята праця народу”. Так як, батьки

можуть влаштувати обід, щоб відсвяткувати шлюб своєї дитини, так і служіння Божественної Літургії не є

випадковою подією але “святою справою народу.” Хтось уповноважений повинен її підготувати. Найпростіші продукти харчування і напої повинні бути приготовані на цей Божественний Бенкет: хліб і

вино. Сьогодні для Божественної Літургії ми використовуємо, хліб і вино, які особисто приготовляє священик

чи диякон. Спочатку хліб і вино приносив хтось до певного місця, де проходила зустріч. В Єрусалимі, Антіохії і

в ранній Візантії, промовлялася молитва за ці дари, перш ніж вони були поставлені на престолі. Приношення

дарів було простим і зрозумілим (так само, як Тридентський обряд латинської Меси, де хліб і вино зберігаються

на маленькому столику біля вівтаря і приносяться до вівтаря). Навіть до початку 8-го століття, різні тексти

показують, що молитви проскомидії промовлялися на початку Літургії, або безпосередньо перед їх

принесенням на престіл. Це певною мірою вносило нерозуміння.

Сьогодні ми звикли до однакової форми служіння в кожній парафії єпархії, але в ранній Церкві була велика

обрядова різноманітність, навіть між парафіями в одному місті. Наприклад, єпископ служачи сьогодні з

богослужбової книги призначеної для єпископа, що має назву ієратикон, завершує проскомидію перед тим, як її

вносять на престіл пресвітери і диякони, а потім ідуть через святилище до Царських воріт, а він приймає дари з

їхніх рук. На початку процесії були довгими, але згодом вони ставали меншими, розпочинаючись за декілька

кроків від царських воріт. Спочатку хліб був покритий тканиною (щось на зразок того, що роблять євреї сьогодні з особливим хлібом

(хала), який благословляють для суботньої трапези), чаша не покривалася. Згодом, багато обрядів і символіки

було вкладено в проскомидію, і псалми і молитви промовлялися під час нарізання хліба, покладення його на

тарілку, при наливанні вина і води в чашу, і при накриванні посуду, а згодом, при приготуванні усіх дарів.

Використання кадила було приписано для цієї частини приготування дарів, і проскомидія відбувалася таким

чином до часу імператора Юстиніана I та до часу посвячення його великого творіння 27 грудня 537 р н.е.,

Церкви Святої Софії, Премудрості Божої. У просторій базиліці, принесення хліба і вина до престолу стало

найважливішим моментом обряду, процесійний хід був набагато більшою подією, ніж вступний обряд входу. Сьогодні проскомидія є “самодостатнім” обрядом. Вона починається і завершується звичайними молитвами,

ймовірно тому, що це було зроблено в іншому місці, ніж святилище, можливо, навіть в іншому будинку. Отже,

яке значення має для нас цей приватний обряд, який здійснюють священики і диякони? Владика Богдан Данило

доручив парохам відкрито здійснити проскомидію один або два рази на рік перед вірними і пояснити їм цю

частину Літургії. Було б корисним ознайомитися вірним із цією частиною Літургії, адже це допомогло б

усвідомити, що найголовніше богослуження вимагає участі багатьох осіб, яких ми не обов’язково бачимо

в церкві, зокрема фермерів, які виростили пшеницю і виноград, тих, хто випікали хліб і виробляли вино, не

тільки в наш час, але протягом століть, від часу, коли Ісус заповідав нам це робити постійно на своїй Останній

Вечері. Сам розвиток складного обряду приготування хліба і вина говорить нам, що очі наших душ можуть

побачити дивовижні речі через світло Святого Духа в найдрібніших жестах та предметах!

CATECHETICAL SERMONS ON THE DIVINE LITURGY

#2 BEFORE THE CURTAIN GOES UP – THE PROSKOMIDE (A.K.A.,

PROSKOMEDIA), OR PROTHESIS

If we want to invite guests to our home we usually tell them what to expect: “drop by for coffee,” or lunch, or dinner

or a bigger celebration, like a birthday party. Sometimes an additional event is added to it, “come for dinner and you

can see our wedding video afterwards,” or come for lunch and we can play Scrabble after it.” Obviously, we will need

to prepare for the visit accordingly. We will have to shop and cook, and take stock of what we will need by way of

drinks or snacks, depending.

The Divine Liturgy is not simply the Supper of the Lord, it is a banquet. A banquet usually includes speeches, or at

least remarks. Similar celebratory meals usually follow a structure developed by the local or ethnic community. A

barbeque is the most informal, and a wedding reception is usually the most formal, but all such gatherings allow for

some flexibility. The term Divine Liturgy means “the people’s Godly work,” or “the holy work of the people.” Just as

parents may arrange for a dinner to celebrate a child’s marriage, so the celebration of the Divine Liturgy is not a

haphazard event; someone in authority needs to arrange it.

The most rudimentary of all food and drink must be prepared for this Divine Banquet: bread and wine. In the format

of the Divine Liturgy we use today, the preparation of the food and drink—the bread and wine—is a private task done

by the priest and deacon. Originally bread and wine was provided by someone, and left in a designated area where the

gathering was held. In Jerusalem, Antioch, and early Byzantium, a prayer was said over these gifts just before they were

brought to the Holy Table. The brining of the gifts was simple and straightforward (just like the Tridentine rite of the

Latin Solemn High Mass, where the bread and wine are kept on a small table in the sanctuary and carried to the altar

very simply). Even up to the beginning of the 8th century, various texts show that the prayers of the proskomedia were

said either at the beginning of the Liturgy, or just before their transfer to the Holy Table. It is somewhat confusing.

Today we are used to a certain uniformity in every parish in a diocese, but in the early Church there was a great deal of

variety, even between parishes in the same city. For example, when a bishop serves today with the hieraticon (the

bishop’s service book), he completes the proskomedia just before it is carried to the Holy Table by the presbyters and

deacons, and then—moving across the sanctuary to the inside of the Royal or Holy Doors—he accepts the gifts from

their hands. The original procession from somewhere else has been ritualized in a smaller procession of only a few steps

from one place in the sanctuary to the Royal Doors.

Originally the bread was covered with a cloth (something Jews do to this day with the special challah, bread which is

blessed for the Sabbath meal), but not the cup. Over time, a great deal of ritual and symbolism was invested in the

proskomedia, and psalm verses and prayers were uttered in the act of cutting the bread, laying it upon the plate, when

pouring the wine and water into the chalice, and when covering the individual utensils and then when covering the

whole array. The use of incense came to be prescribed for this preparation, and most of this was in place by the time of

the Emperor Justinian I and his great project dedicated on December 27, 537 AD, the Church of Agia Sophia, the Holy

Wisdom. In the massive space of the basilica, the conveying of the bread and wine to the Holy Table became a high

point of the ritual, a procession far more splendid than the entrance rite.

Today the proskomedia is a “self-contained” rite. It opens and closes with the usual formal beginning prayers and

ending prayers,” probably because it was done in a place other than the sanctity, perhaps even a different building. So,

what meaning does this private ritual for priest and deacon have for us? Bishop Bohdan Danylo instructed the pastors to

perform the rite once or twice a year in full view of the people and to explain it to them. Simply being aware of the

proskomide is useful, for it should make us aware that the highest act of our worship requires the input, the

contributions, of many whom we do not necessarily see in church, like the farmers who produced the wheat and grapes,

those who made the bread and wine—and not just in our time, but through the ages since Jesus told us to do again what

he did at his Last Supper. The mere development of the intricate ritual of preparing bread and wine tells us that the eye

of our soul can see marvelous things by the light of the Spirit in the smallest gestures and objects!
