A Challenge to Spread the Holiday Cheer Our Fraternity is Adopting 4 Families for Christmas

The Arlington Fraternity will be adopting 2 local families through the charity organization Brighter Paths, AND adopting children from 2 families that attend the Glen Forest Elementary School, to assist them in celebrating the Christmas holiday. These families are suffering economically; therefore, our fraternity is hoping that our members will extend kindness and generosity by donating presents in support of these families. In

addition, we are requesting the donation of food for the two families being adopted through Brighter Paths for their Christmas dinner. The Lodge will be receiving the information about the children/families (sex, ages, and clothing sizes) at the beginning of December, and we will provide this information to our membership through our weekly communications emails and lists posted in the Social Quarters.

There will be a collection box within the Social Quarters for your donations.

Finally we have a Name for Our Lodge’s Moose … ARLIE! The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank the 35 members who participated in our “fun” contest to determine a name for our Moose head in the Social Quarters. It was close, but Arlie beat out Magnus by 2 votes. The sponsor of the winning name was Evelyn Lewis (of the Lewis Clan). For the record, the name is for Arlington! Please introduce him when visitors come to the Lodge.

Thanksgiving Family Feast – November 22nd The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Billy Hensley, Joyce Chaffins, Liz Coombs, Tom Oderwald, and Marty Mendel for cooking, preparing, and dishing (for the buffet) this excellent feast on a special day. In addition, an acknowledgement is in order for all those members that washed the many, many pots & pans from this event! Note: the turkeys were cooked in the large smoker in the back yard. (continued on Page 14)

Legion Breakfast – Sunday, December 2nd (10:00am – 1:00pm) Start the holiday season right by enjoying a “fulfilling” breakfast on a Sunday morning before you venture into the hustle-n-bustle commercial world of buying those needed presents. It’s an all-you-can-eat breakfast ($8.00/adult). As usual, the buffet portion of this event will consist of sausage patties/links, bacon, heated maple syrup, fruit salad, and home fried potatoes. From the kitchen there will be “made-to-order” eggs (any way you want them including omelets), pancakes, and French toast. Furthermore, there will be at least one “surprise” food item, coffee, and orange juice. And if you’re too stuffed after eating to go shopping … you can always stay at the Lodge to watch the NFL games.

New LOOM & WOTM Member Orientation on Sunday, December 2nd at 12:00pm (Noon) The orientation will occur near the end of the Legion Breakfast. New members that plan to attend the orientation should come early to enjoy the breakfast offering; as the Lodge/Chapter will pay the breakfast fee. Attendance at the orientation is not mandatory for continuing membership, but we are hoping that everyone wants to know about our

support to Mooseheart & Moosehaven … and maybe learn some answers to questions about our Arlington Fraternity.

Children’s Christmas Party Saturday, December 15th 12:00am – 2:00pm Santa will take time from his busy schedule and visit our Lodge to get last minute gift requests from the children and provide an early present to each (assuming that they have been good this past year). Lunch will be provided at the start of the event for the children; chicken nuggets will be the main entree. There will be some activities to entertain

the children; however, the activity with Santa Claus usually takes an extended portion of time in the event. Parents are encouraged to take memorable pictures of their children with Santa, and the Lodge will also be taking pictures to place on the Arlington website.

Please sign up those children who plan to attend, either in person at the Lodge or call (703) 820-9345 by December 9th. It is important that you provide the name of the child and his/her age.

Another Year that was Successful For Retention Week (In Our Eyes) There were many activities during this dedicated week (& the prior weekend) to attract our members to come to the

Arlington Fraternity and to entice new & former Moose members to visit our Fraternity. The activities consisted of an Open House with the Sunset Manor Community on October 27th that included an invitation to the Children’s Halloween Party, the Membership Appreciation Breakfast on November 4th (with the Fellowship Meeting afterwards), a Retention Call-A-Thon after the LOOM General Meeting on November 6th, and the Honor Our Veterans Celebration on November 10th. The Arlington Fraternity did not enroll any new members; but we got to welcome many families in the local community, to have our members get together for a complementary meal for their efforts over the past year, and have our members honor those individuals within the Arlington Fraternity and guests who dedicated a portion of their lives to serve our Country.

Celebrate the Holidays December 15th (5:00pm – 7:00pm) Why should the kids only have a celebration at the Lodge for the holiday? That’s why we extend an invitation to our members and their guests to come relax at the Lodge to enjoy some “me” time. The Administrator is willing to listen to what our members want Santa to give them for Christmas; however, he will not tolerate anyone sitting on his lap (weak knees)! The offered fare for this celebration will be something easy to cook … chili, and corn bread. After stuffing their bellies, our members can sit back with their favorite beverage and watch two NFL

games beginning at 4:30pm [Houston vs. N.J. Jets @4:30pm & Cleveland vs. Denver @8:00pm]. Also, there are six college football bowl games beginning at 12:00pm (noon).

Salute to Christmas December 24th (5:00pm – 8:00pm) Staying in town for the Holidays? Then stop by the Lodge for a complementary drink to celebrate the spirit of the season on Christmas Eve. The Lodge will provide an assortment of appetizers. Let Santa Clause do all the work on this evening while you sit back and relax. Ho! Ho! Ho! [For the record, you can ask but it is believed that there will be no volunteers to assist you in assembling any gifts that Santa may have left for the children].

WOTM Italian Dinner – November 17th Momma Mia! As the Italians believe, food solves everything … but we did not know when to stop eating to discuss our current minor problems of our Fraternity. Plenty of food, and if anyone left hungry … it was their own fault! The WOTM stated that it was another successful fundraiser event, as there were over 25 members and guests that enjoyed the home-made food buffet.

The menu selection consisted of Il primo: green tossed salad, Minestrone soup, cheese and grape platter & Italian bread; Il secondo: Lasagna, seafood classico, penne alfredo with chicken, eggplant parmigiana, chicken/sausage mozzarella pasta, and ravioli with meat sauce, AND Il dolce: chocolate “Billy-misu”, cannoli, chocolate cake, and ricotta cheese cake. The WOTM extends a thank you to Roxanne Coles-Matis, Donna Field, Liz Coombs, Andrea Hensley, Rose Russo, Judith York, Anna Phillips, Betty McLaurin, Tommy Oderwald, Billy Hensley, Andre McFail, and John Matis for being a volunteer “CHEF” and/or contributing in this event. In addition, an appreciation is offered to all the volunteers who performed the clean up after the appetites of everyone was satisfied.

Redskins “Calling All Cooks” Sundays There were only two Redskin games played in November that qualified for “Calling All Cooks”, as the game against the Atlanta Falcons was played on the same day as the Membership Appreciation Breakfast (everyone was going to be stuffed), and the game against the Dallas Cowboys was

on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday). The Lodge wants to thank Billy Hensley, Joyce Chaffins, and Andrea Hensley, for providing chicken wings, macaroni & cheese, and baked beans for the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 11th. Liz Coombs & Tom Oderwald had volunteered for the game against the Houston Texans on November 18th; however, there was so much food left over from the WOTM Italian Dinner the night before that those remaining items were again offered instead during the Redskin game. Liz & Tom offered to volunteer for another game on December 16th.

Please volunteer to participate as a cook in December; refer to listed games above! It is noted that “Calling All Cooks” that was scheduled for December 23rd against the Tennessee Titans was cancelled as the NFL changed this game to Saturday. Remember … the Lodge will pay for the purchase of the food that will be offered and the cook(s) + partner(s) eat for free on the day of their offering.

9th Annual

Honor Our Veterans Celebration – November 10th The Arlington Fraternity had its second ceremony for the Valued Veterans Program; as we had confusion in receiving the certificates for six veterans in time for notification purposes in April (but we did have an Honor Our Veterans dinner). Twelve (12) registered veterans were planned to be honored at the ceremony; however, only four of those veterans could make the ceremony. In the ceremony, each honoree who attended was presented with a Valued Veteran certificate. Unfortunately, a lapel pin was also to be

presented from Moose International; but, the Administrator made an OOPS by misplacing them (he is still looking for them). As our tradition from the first ceremony, the Arlington Fraternity issued a custom-designed “Value Veteran” baseball cap to each honored veteran in the program. The final ceremony segment was presenting the “Valued Veteran of the Year” Award … which was bestowed to James Bucklin Sr. for his efforts in assisting in many Lodge tasks. Senior Regent’s Message I wish everyone goodwill and good health in this last month of 2018. I thank all of you for your ongoing volunteerism and your expertise and friendship. One of the most invaluable bonds of Arlington Lodge and Arlington Chapter is the firm friendship between their members – thank you! And, Mr.

Administrator, thank you for letting us use the Lodge Ritual Hall for our meetings, WOTM appreciates your generosity. The fireplace lounge area would be preferable if that room was enclosed – perhaps if we are hard-working and successful for the rest of our year, we could come up with a solution for a smaller place to meet – excluding, of course, rooms downstairs in the basement. Liz Coombs, Jo Glass, Andrea Hensley, and Nessa Ruoff were honored at the November 6th special “Open” meeting for their specific achievements – ladies, we are so proud of you! Roxy’s Italian Dinner was fantastic and very successful. Joyce’s Thanksgiving meal was superb. I sound like an old record but where would you be able to indulge in such fantastic fare for $10 per person!? Next up is Patti Rodas’ Green Cap celebration, which is on Saturday, Dec 8th and she has kindly posted information on the WOTM bulletin board. Our Children’s Christmas Party is on Saturday, Dec 15 from Noon to 2 p.m. We’ve been in touch with Santa, who promises to drop by to chat with the kids. The WOTM’s Christmas Party will be on Tuesday, Dec 18th after our meetings, including our joint meeting with LOOM – winning ticket for the Christmas basket, courtesy of Cheryl’s artistic talents, will be pulled in the evening. There’s also the “Salute to Christmas” on Monday, Dec 24 (Christmas Eve). The WOTM is up to date and working hard to organize the January to April 2019 projects. They include food raffles, seasonal baskets (Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s and Easter), and one or two dinners. The ever popular “Mystery Raffle” takes place on Saturday, January 5, the same day that volunteers sort out, in the ballroom, emergency food supplies for low-income residents whenever schools are closed during inclement weather. Thanks LOOM and WOTM for your support and hard work – and to borrow a phrase from my 9-year grandson, “You are the BEST!!”

Membership Appreciation Breakfast – November 4th Thirty-six (36) members and 6 children took advantage of the free breakfast that was sponsored by the Lodge, Chapter and the Moose Legion Committee as a thank you to our members for their efforts over the past year. The sponsors want to thank Tom Oderwald, Elizabeth Coombs, Andre McFail, and Joyce Chaffins for doing the cooking. John

Matis helped a little bit in the kitchen at the beginning; but then went into his “dungeon” to do Administrator bookwork. Ralph Phillips kept a tally of the partakers; as he was ready to collect breakfast fees but there were no guests.

Youth Awareness Student Congress – November 3rd The plan was to concentrate an extra effort this year to get high school students to attend the Youth Awareness Student Congress at our Lodge, which we feel was accomplished by many volunteers. Thank you volunteers! However, the results was the same as the last two years … no students showed up at our Lodge to participate in the program. The format

change to have four (4) mini-sessions during the day, in lieu of one major session, so that the students could try to participate around their our Saturday social and sports activities apparently still did not entice any students to participate. The Arlington Fraternity believes that this program is important to support high school students in a chance to obtain a scholarship for their further education; therefore, we will not give up and plan to sponsor another Youth Awareness Student Congress next year! The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Myssi Strange and Cynthia Millard, as representatives of VMA at our Youth Awareness Student Congress, for having the patience (and “twittering their thumbs”) over the six hours waiting for a high school student to come to the Lodge. In addition, we want to thank Judith York, Bernie Cerroni, and John Matis for attending the Youth Awareness Student Congress at our Lodge on that day. For the record, the Lodge made a donation to VMA Youth Awareness Program in hopes of sponsoring a few students this year.

Honor Our Veterans Celebration (continued) Just moments before the ceremony began, a group of Moose members from Ohio looking for the nearest open Lodge while visiting our area walked in; and since most were veterans, they gladly attended the ceremony. We gave our visitors our normal

enthusiastic welcome after the ceremony. It is noted that ALL veterans in attendance were recognized at the beginning of the Ceremony. All attendees to the ceremony were offered a complementary celebration dinner.

The Arlington Fraternity would like to thank Joyce Chaffins, Elizabeth Coombs, and Tom Oderwald for preparing the celebration dinner of seasoned chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, and green beans. In addition, a special thanks is expended to Bernie Cerroni and John Matis for their efforts in the performance of the Valued Veteran Ceremony. And as usual, the Arlington Fraternity wants to express our appreciation for all those members that cleaned up after the event.

The Arlington Moose Legion Committee Corner (2) The Arlington Moose Legion Committee donated $300 to the Ritual Team of the Bull Run Moose Legion #185 to help towards the expenses of their trip to compete at the 2018 International Moose Legion Convention in Oklahoma City, OK. The Ritual Team did not win this year.

Let’s Talk (A Message from the Administrator)

As always at this time of the year, I want to recognize all those members who keep the Lodge operational for the enjoyment of our members. First, I want to thank Joyce Chaffins for her efforts as the Social Quarters Manager in performing the day-to-day activities of our business activities; including the planning and

preparation of the Friday Night dinners, AND handling the rentals of our Ritual Hall. Second, I want to express appreciation to all our current & past ABC Managers (Michael Pogue, Jane Kennedy, Angella Coles, and Anna Phillips) who served our members and guests on a daily basis with their favorite “libations” and their demanding requests for paper pull tabs. Finally, I want to thank all those volunteers who provided the necessary efforts in assisting in the Friday Night dinners, in the (almost) weekly Bar Bingo activities, in the planned Social events throughout the year, and in donating the desserts at the Friday Night dinners. These efforts also include those volunteers who work “behind the scenes” for planning the various events, calling active/expired members to continue to pay their membership in the Moose Organization, and for staying after the long and tiring dinners/events to clean up.

On a personal note, I want to express my appreciation to Anna Phillips for her dedication as a volunteer over the past year as Assistant Administrator in assisting me to record our financial transactions in the computer; and reconciling our daily income bags.

Governor’s Corner The holiday season is upon us and I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and I want to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our Lodge put on quite the Thanksgiving holiday meal replete with all the seasons' favorite dishes. Thanks to all those who helped in preparing the impressive spread and to all those who came to enjoy it.

There are a number of upcoming events to help celebrate the season. We have two events on December 15th - the annual WOTM Children's Christmas Party and a NEW event, Celebrate the Holidays. On December 24th we will have a Salute to Christmas. Hope to see you there.

On a more personal note, I'm happy to announce the marriage of two of our members. Bob Muretta and Ursula Perales were wed on Sunday, November 18th in Las Vegas Nevada. It was a lovely ceremony and reception. In attendance for the nuptials was a nice contingent of Moose members that included Randy & Sonia Nolan, Ciaran (Mac) & Annie McAlonan and myself, your Governor. Be sure to congratulate Bob & Ursula when you see them.

As always, we need your participation to make our events successful. Remember, it's our members that make our lodge great.

Lodge Repairs/Replacements In continuation about the repair of the air conditioning system from last month’s Newsletter, the Administrator has “egg on his face”. Unbeknownst to him, the air conditioning system was repaired with a replacement actuation motor on October 19th; however, no one in the Lodge told him. He kept on calling the HVAC Mechanical Contractor

for the date when the new actuation motor would be delivered. It seems that the HVAC Mechanical Contractor confused us with another Lodge being serviced and finally realized that the motor had been delivered and installed. Unfortunately, we were freezing all our members for two weeks when they visited the Lodge [Note: there were some warm days when the air conditioning felt good]. Thanks to Billy Hensley, he turned off the air conditioning system prior to the WOTM Halloween Party and Open House on October 27th. The air conditioning system was “winterized” and the heating system became operational on November 5th. Heat … all members love it! A new upcoming repair event, a “drip” in the piping by the boiler was observed when the heat was turned on, which will need to be repaired. The Lodge received a second UNREALISTIC VERY HIGH water bill over the past two quarters. When the first bill was received, we had Fairfax Company “verify” that the meter was operating correctly; but also complained the amount of water was unusual based on past years of billing. We reasoned in our mind that maybe the combination of the water slide in the Summer Blast event, the watering of the grass, flowers, & community garden, a discovered toilet in the basement running for a few day, and a hunch (unproven) that someone was filling coolers for their work crews on a daily basis was the reason for the high bill. When we received the second bill, we called Fairfax Water again and they said that we must have a leak somewhere after their water meter. They did note that they would make an adjustment to our account if a certified plumber provided proper documentation that a leak was found and repaired. And so … the hunt for the leak begins. Thank you Bernie Cerroni for volunteering to discuss argue the situation with Fairfax Water.

Thanksgiving Family Feast – November 22nd 14 Everyone left STUFFED and satisfied from this event! The Arlington Fraternity provided everything we could image, except the kitchen sink (it was needed to sanitize the dishes) for this traditional holiday feast. By our count, 26 Moose member and guests attended this festive event, with many more coming to the Lodge after the event to celebrate the holiday.

The feast included 5 turkeys & 1 spiral ham as the main entrée selections, turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, green beans (no casserole), sweet potatoes, spinach casserole, Brussel sprouts, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, cole slaw, cucumber salad, a condiment relish tray, rolls & butter, chips & dip, and a cheese & cracker tray. And as this was not enough, the offered desserts were a variety of pies (apple pie, sweet potato, pumpkin pie, etc.), Cool Whip for the pies, and coffee. For the record, the Administrator sent out a flyer that our Lodge was open on Thanksgiving Day; however, we believe that many other Lodges now have decided to have a holiday feast of their own at their Lodges! It did not make a difference as long as all our members enjoyed their holiday with family and friends (home or Lodge).

The Lodge wants your

Ideas for New Events

Tell us what you want to have for events in the next six months! We need to expand our events to keep everyone interested in the Lodge. Every idea will be considered (e.g.: children movie night, a Capitals or Wizards game, a mystery bus ride, etc.). Please contact John Matis, Bernie Cerroni or Gregg Cady with your suggestions.

WOTM November Committee Activity Night Higher Degrees – College of Regents and Award of Achievement on November 6th First, the Chapter Award of Achievement document was issued to the

Chapter and Joan “Patti” Rodas (Jr. Graduate Regent) for the 2017-2018 Moose Year. Then four members of Chapter #1253 were honored at this special ceremony for their College of Regents accomplishments. Nessa Ruoff was recognized for being conferred into the College of Regents at the Moose International 2018 Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. After one year of being conferred into the College of Regents and the Chapter being successful during this same period, Elizabeth Coombs and Jo Glass earned their red tassel (replacement for the green tassel). Anna Phillips placed the red tassel on the cap of Elizabeth Coombs and Nadine Hodges placed the red tassel on the cap of Jo Glass. For the finale of the event, Andrea Hensley earned the red stole for her gown after being invested in the College of Regents for three years. The red stole was presented and installed to Andrea Hensley by Donna Field. The WOTM Chapter #1253 wants to extend their appreciation to all the LOOM members, WOTM members, and guests that attended the ceremony.
