PEAbODYOPERA HOUSE The big news right now in the arts and entertainment life of St. Louis is the grand opening of a new venue in the city. Actually it is an old friend that has been newly christened the Peabody Opera House. For those of us that have been around a while you may remember it as the Kiel Opera House. The Peabody House has a rich history that is alive and well in the memories of many St. Louisans.
The Opera House was originally part of the Municipal Auditorium complex that included the Convention Hall bet-ter known as Kiel Audito-rium. The Opera House is all that remains of the original complex as the Auditorium was de-molished to make way for the Scottrade Center completed in 1994. It was the Opera House with its stone bears that faced Market Street on the Memorial Plaza that became identified with St. Louis just as much as Union Station or the Arch.
The newly refurbished Peabody Opera House has added six to seven ven-ues that can accommodate a variety of programs from large to moderate sized. The main theatre has approximately 3,500 seats while four small side theaters or halls have a capacity of up to 700 seats each. Visitors will also find an exposition hall and a basement restaurant/bar space. In its time the Kiel Opera House attracted concert artists, Broadway shows, plays, dance companies, symphonies, blues, jazz, country-western, rock, grand opera and light opera. Based on the upcoming performances listed to date the Peabody Opera House will continue that tradition adding new life to the downtown St. Louis scene.
For complete information on upcoming performances and about the Peabody itself please visit the web site peabodyoperahouse.com
