INTRODUC'I'ION

The years since 1800 have seen an unending stream ofhumanity--individuals and families--move from eastern states,

Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee andKentucky, and arrive at the present area of Clark County. whilea great many continued westward, a considerable number lingeredlong enough for their names to be entered in official countyrecords. Some others put down roots, and their descendants havehelped create the Clark County of the present.

Recent years nave brought a multitude of researchersretracing the paths of their forebears. It is for these ancestor seekers that this volume has been prepared.

The intent of the compilers has been to provide accessto the earliest official records which will interest researchers:

marriages, divorces, probate, tax and assessment lists, ministerial credentials and registered cattle brands .

All material included, with few exceptions, has beencopied directly from the original records in the Clark CountyCourt House in Arkadelphia. Because of changes in penmanshipover the past 180 years, fading ink, yellowing pages, phoneticspelling and human error, some names will undoubtedly have beenentered incorrectly. In looking for particular names, the usershould consider all possible spellings, with possible confusionof letters such as e-i, £=2, p~, J-I and S-G-L. The completeindex will make variations of spelling fairly easy to spot.

Persons who have not lived in Arkansas should be aware

of one quirk of pronunciation which has been widely prevalent.Endings of names may be spoken differently from the usual spelling; for example, Bertha becomes Berth..!~, and Etta is calledEtter. This practice is evident where the recording clerk spelled as he heard a name pronounced.

It must be stated that this volume would not have taken

form without the blessing. encouragement and cooperation ofCounty Clerk Polly Pennington; her staff, Fern Lambert, BillMcCaski11 and Joan Gaither; Circuit Clerk Billy Williams and hisstaff; and Ann Favand of Gateway Press. In addition, the goodhumored tolerance of J. T. and Tom Wright, Claude, Chris andBrandon Caffee, during this two-year-long project must not goun-noted!

With each copy of this work goes the fervent hope of thecompilers that many a searcher will discover a clue to his ownunique family history.
