ScienceScience Notebook (folder/composition notebook)Students will be responsible for keeping a notebook which will include a Table of Contents, labs, activities, and notes. Notebooks will be collected periodically and graded.

Daily Question (DQ): Students will be responsible for answering a DQ almost every day of the week. These questions will be put in google classroom and students will be asked to complete them each morning for morning work or as a science warm up. There are 3 components required to receive credit for DQ’s: Question, Answer, and Evidence.

ScienceWebsite: https://sciencewolves5.shutterfly.comYou can become a member for weekly email updates. The website is for you to use as your first resource for all science class information. Check weekly or nightly for study guides, video lessons, agenda information, daily questions, project requirements, and pictures of your child in class

**Please be mindful that assignment and testing dates may change. We like to work at the pace of our students rather than adhering to a set schedule. Thus, we update our website regularly.

Science Fair: January 11th This year students will be able to participate in our school wide fair and may be chosen to display in our system wide science fair on January 18 Winners will also be able to move forward in a region wide science fair in Gwinnett County.

Learning in Math• The Content we will be learning in Math will come from GSE

(Georgia Standards of Excellence) www.gadoe.org • Students will use math book, math workbook, websites,

instructional videos and interactive notebooks as learning resources.

• Includes but not limited to: – Order of Operations and Whole Numbers-- Adding/Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing, Comparing

and Converting Decimals– Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Fractions– Geometry and Coordinate Planes– 2D and 3D figures– Volume and Measurement

5th Grade Math• Class instruction will consist of a variety of

large group instruction, notes, interactive games, small groups, and independent practice.

• All workbook pages can be accessed on the school website.

• Test dates will be listed on the weekly newsletter. Students are responsible for recording HW and Test Dates in their agenda each week.

Homework - approx 50 min/dayScience

- Study guides are completed and reviewed before each test

- Study notes ~10 minutes each day

Math- Students will have a nightly review sheet to

complete Monday -Thursday. Additional homework may be assigned depending on the unit that is being taught.

- Homework may be assigned in “GO MATH” practice books.

- Students need to practice multiplication facts nightly to remain fluent.

Grammar / Writing• Writing focus at the beginning of the year will be

paragraph construction and sentence structure.• The 8 parts of speech and other LA skills will be

reviewed through LARS. These Language Arts Review Skills will spiral throughout the year with the goal being for the students to incorporate them into their own writing. There will be a LARS quiz every Friday, and the LARS sheet will serve as the study guide. ALL LARS sheets need to be kept throughout the year.

• The students have an ELA notebook containing notes to refer to as a resource.

SpellingWe will not have a formal spelling test each week. Instead, we will incorporate into LARS in ways such as:• Spelling rules• Commonly misspelled words• Homophones

These words will be included in the Friday LARS test. Our goal is for the students to APPLY these rules and learned words into their own writing.

Reading• GSE (Georgia Standards of Excellence) www.gadoe.org

• Students will be reading from a variety of texts including three class novels, self chosen books within their Lexile range, and nonfiction Social Studies material.

• Reading Counts (SRC) will be used again this year.• Each nine weeks students will be required to read and

test on at least 5 books from their assigned Choice Board to ensure they are reading a variety of genres.

Lexile LevelsStudents have been given a Lexile range for their Reading Choice Board.• This range might be lower than the range you see on

their most recent Georgia Milestone ELA score. Below are a few reasons for the difference:

1. Some books at a higher level might not be appropriate for a 5th grader.

2. Books above a certain level are difficult to find in our media center.

3. The back of the Georgia Milestone paper will give you more detailed information about your child as a reader. (Ex: some students will score a 3 or 4 on the ELA section as a whole, but could score a 2 in the subsections of reading or vocabulary.

Social StudiesUnits of Study in Social Studies.

1. Effective Citizenship2. The Civil War and Reconstruction3. Turn of the Century in America4. World War I5. The Great Depression6. World War II7. The Cold War & Civil Rights Movement8. America Since 19759. Personal Finance/Economics

Social Studies

• Google Classroom is used to support material covered during class. It can be accessed at home.

[email protected]. The password is their 312 number. • Because of the large amount of material covered, we

will have a quiz or formative test almost every week (check agendas for the date). Then, at the conclusion of each unit, we will give a summative test.

• Children can bring home their SS folders, log onto their Google Classroom resources, and use the SS website to help themselves master the material.

Homework - approx 50 min/day ELA

• Use our daily LARS (Language Arts Review Skills) sheet as a study guide for each Friday’s Formative LARS test. Teachers will send these home on Thursday nights, but if your child struggles to retain the skills, you may want to request that he/she bring home nightly.

• Students should read nightly for 20+ minutes• Assignments will be given on www.ixl.com periodically

for extra practice and support.

Social Studies• Study notes and resources in order to be ready for

quizzes and tests.

Grading• Report cards are sent every nine weeks.• Progress reports are sent every four and a half weeks.• Grades are available on PowerSchool.

Grading Weights and Expectations for Academic Areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies

Formative 50% (Minimum of 14 grades in this category per quarter)Summative 35% (Minimum of 3 common assessments per quarter)Benchmark 15% (1 per quarter)

Late AssignmentsStudents will be required to complete all assignments. Teachers will work with students and parents and utilize morning tutoring time to make up missing assignments. In the event that this does not work, teachers will follow the Student Accountability Plan below. In the meantime, students’ grades in PowerSchool will reflect NTI (Not Turned In).

Student Accountability Plan:1. 1st Offense Missing assignment: NTI in PowerSchool and parent

phone call2. 2nd Offense Missing assignment: Assign working lunch3. 3rd Offense Missing assignment: Assign a 2nd working lunch4. 4th Offense Missing assignment: Administrative Academic Referral

Dress Code

The Wolf Way Buford Academy has adopted a school wide discipline

plan that focuses on the positive in each student.

● All adults in the building are involved and students can receive stamps/stickers from any adult at any time. Stamps/stickers are earned by making the right choices and being a model citizen.

● Students can earn classroom prizes based on the number of stamps/stickers that they receive throughout the school month. They can also be rewarded by the principal at the end of each school month.

● Ask your student how they have earned the stamps in their agenda!

Agendas/Gold FoldersAgendas should be brought to school each day and are used to:

– Communicate between parents & teachers– Record assignments and test dates– Serve as a hall pass for restroom breaks, library and nurse

visits (clinic log in back of agenda)

● Please review the papers in your child’s gold folder. This will be sent home every Friday.

● We try to be as paperless as possible, so you won’t see as many pieces of actual graded work. You will want to check PowerSchool often for grades.

Miscellaneous

• Please have students complete homework on notebook paper and ONLY in pencil.

• Encourage your child to complete work neatly.

• Please send in healthy snacks.

DO NOT BRING: Cheetos, Takis, or any snacks that stain your hands.

• We prefer for the students to drink water only.

Fish Trip • Fifth grade will have one field trip this year- to

the Tennessee Aquarium• The date is Tuesday, May 15th• The cost of the field trip is $70-$75. Information

regarding the “Fish Trip” will go home around the 2nd week of January.

• We encourage parents to attend – the cost is the same for parents. All parents must have a current background check on file. (usually around $55) (many expire during the 5th grade year- get it done early!)

5th Grade Website

The 5th grade website (http://grade5website.weebly.com/) can be accessed through the BA website (www.bufordcityschools.org). There you can find several resources and study material for all four academic areas (math, science, ELA, and S.S.)
