GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome to all of you in the Florida Chapter of the American College of Physicians. It would be hard to imagine a time in our lives that could be more packed with upheaval, learning and gratitude.

First, let us briefly review the upheavals that have roiled our lives and our world. COVID-19 has reshaped our landscape in a manner that none of us could have ever imagined. Truth can be stranger than fiction as we have all learned during the last 9 months. Our own, our patients’, and our colleagues’ social, financial, political and professional lives have been turned up-side down. COVID-19 has overlaid a worldwide health disaster upon what was already expected to be a tumultuous year, given the political timing and social atmosphere of our country. The tragic loss of more than a million (and counting) people in our interconnected world has reshaped our priorities along with our grasp of the variety of human responses to turmoil.

It would be no stretch of the imagination to say that we have never, in human history, learned at such a rapid pace as we have in the last 9 months, at least as it pertains to a health crisis of humanity. Medical science has been called into action and has held the world’s attention, hope and trust above any insti-tution or government. We learned that medical science could conduct basic and translational research in weeks instead of years. We learned that vaccines could be developed in months instead of decades. We learned that we could develop the means to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and the world using virtual technology, nearly over night.

Tragedy and upheaval reveal both the frailty and the heroism of humanity. We need to be especially grateful at this time for those heroes, both venerable or anonymous, who have helped us survive to this point. Dr. Anthony Fauci MD MACP is an ex-ample of an exemplary person whose knowledge, courage and demeanor have propelled the forces of medical science forward at unimaginable speed, and in the process, humbly becoming the world’s most trusted person. Our national ACP leaders, including Jacqueline Fincher, ACP President, William Fox, ACP Chair of Board of Governors and Heather Gantzer, ACP Chair

Board of Regents, have been both steadfast and responsive to the many concerns of physicians. Each of you can name, and hopefully thank, the many humble heroes who have helped our communities during the long year we have had.

At the level of our Florida Chapter, the largest ACP Chapter in the world, please join me in recognizing our own heroes. First, Dawn Moerings and Bridget Anderson have kept our chapter in vibrant good health despite having to develop a totally new format for the upcoming meeting to be held completely in a virtual format. Be sure to let Dawn and Bridget know how much you appreciate their efforts. Second, Dr. Wilhelmine Wiese-Rometsch, Scientific Program Chair, has put together and held together a program that is simply outstanding. Most virtual programs have offered only 10 or fewer CMEs, while our own program will be 21 CMEs and include all the needed compo-nents for licensure renewal. Thank you, Dr. Wiese-Rometsch. Finally, we should all give a virtual standing ovation to our im-mediate past Governor, Dr. Jason Goldman. He was to have been recognized at our COVID-cancelled Chapter meeting in March, 2020, for his contributions to our chapter. He was cho-sen to be on the ACP Board of Regents as a tribute to the quan-tity and quality of his work for the ACP during the 4 years of his Governorship and the many years of work for the Florida ACP before that.

Last, we remember with fondness and gratitude, the life and contributions of our dear colleague and friend, Dr. Tulisa LaRoc-ca who passed away from breast cancer on October 13 at the tender age of 44. She leaves behind her husband Nicholas and children Isabel and Nicolas, with memories of the vibrant, joyful life she lead; which included leadership in enriching the lives of physicians. She will be remembered in perpetuity with a new annual award, The Tulisa LaRocca, MD Wellness Champion Award, which will given at the next chapter meeting.

Regards,

George Everett MD MACP Governor, Florida Chapter ACP
