Class Updates Today we went to the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Students were workers in an oyster cannery. They are bringing home a can of their oysters they made today. Students also created a roller coaster. They had three balls which were their "passengers". The first challenge involved having to make a six inch gap between the track and the can. Each ball had to land in the can. The second challenge involved having to create a loop in their roller coaster. We had a ton of fun today!

In Reading, we read a National Geographic article called "Reaching for the Sky". Students used the text features to define and explain the forces of gravity, thrust, lift, and drag. Class Updates Students went to P.E. today. In Math, students used strategies for when they are subtracting across zero. For example: 600-233 Students could subtract 1 from 600 and then subtract without decomposing. They would have to add 1 back at the end. 599-233=366, 366+1=367 In Writing, students learned to imagine themselves back in their small moment to help them write with lots of details. In Reading, students took MAP-R. This is a reading assessment. In Social Studies, students began learning about a person that contributed to the common good. Students will teach other students about their person tomorrow.

In Math, students continued subtracting three-digit numbers. In Writing, students continued being the captain of their writing. They are taking their small moment story through the writing process. In Reading, we identified the similarities and differences in two pieces of text about owls, Owl Moon and "Who's Whoooo?". In Science, we learned about gravity. We tested to see if a pen and a dictionary would hit the ground at the same time when dropped. Students also got to use a gravity simulator on their ChromeBooks.

Class Updates Students went to Art today. In Math, students added three addends together. They found ways to make the numbers more "friendly" so they would be easier to add. For example, with 241 + 59 + 354, students could add 9 to 241 to get 250, which is a "friendly" number. Then, students would add 250 + 50 = 300, and then 300 + 354 to get the answer of 654. In Writing, students began revising their small moment stories. In Reading, students had a discussion about whether they thought Ooka was fair or not fair. We had Buddy Reading with Mrs. Batky's kindergarteners!

Class Updates Students went to Art today. In Math, students determined that it does not matter what order you add up numbers in an addition problem. For example, 5+6 and 6+5 both equal 11. Students created a heart map of things that matter to them. This will be inspiration for writing in the future. They also decorated their writer's notebooks. Students presented their Me Stew. They all did a fabulous job! I learned so much about what represents them! We had a class meeting to reflect on our first week.

Class Updates We completed the Marshmallow Challenge. Students had to make the tallest freestanding structure with spaghetti and a marshmallow on top. In Math, students found patterns in an addition table. We learned about odd and even numbers. Students discovered through a broken calculator game that even+even=even, odd+odd=even, and odd+even=odd. Students took a narrative writing pre-assessment. Some students presented their Me Stew. They all did a fabulous job! I learned so much about what represents them! In Reading, we used inferencing to read the wordless picture book Free Fall.

Class Updates Today was a very productive and fun first day of school. We went over many routines and procedures. We did many housekeeping duties such as assigning lockers and organizing our materials. We read a book called First Day Jitters about how even teachers can be nervous about the first day of school. We ended the day playing "Classmate BINGO" with all the third grade classes. Students had an opportunity to find out interesting facts about their classmates in order to fill up their entire BINGO board.
