52 NEW LABELS FOR OUR GOLDEN BOY Heading the long-standing Cape Town trend to reinvent oneself – and rather frequently so – this year’s first prize for shapeshifting goes to Ryk Neethling, former Olympic gold medal winner and sexiest man in the country. Lining up with other sports heroes such as Schalk Burger and Ernie Els, already established in the Winelands, Ryk launched his own label in February in cooperation with Paarl’s Val de Vie, where he owns a property and has initiated a swimming school at the local leisure centre. A man of many talents, Ryk confesses that “it’s always been a dream of mine to blend my own wine”. Guided by Val de Vie winemaker Harold Versfeld, Ryk created his own wine blend, spending hours meticulously tasting and mixing and matching until the two reached a blend that was Ryk’s perfect wine. In keeping with Val de Vie’s varietals, the water baby’s wine is a Rhône blend, made up of cultivars such as Syrah, Carignan, Mourvedre, Grenache and Cinsaut. A votre santé. MERCHANTS ON LONG Exposed koppieklip, burnished balustrades, polished Majolica tiles and re-foiled gold lettering; high gloss black mannequins and a fresh mix of music like Simphiwe Dana and 340ml; a lush repository for fashion and accessories sourced from Botswana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa – this is Merchants on Long, brainchild of luxury goods mogul Johan Rupert’s daughter, Hanneli Rupert.
