50 RCM BOD AND EDITORIAL STAFF

Dear Fellow Manila Rotarians,

Last week, we were enlightened on the pol-icy directions of the Department of Tourism through the very informative talk of Secre-tary Bernadette “Berna” Romulo-Puyat be-fore a jampacked audience at our luncheon meeting. Thereafter, she answered questions sent by Manila Rotarians right before our program started, an innovation we introduced in keeping with our time limit.

On the centennial front, I take pride in announcing that PD Pepo Nuñez has volunteered his services for the Centennial Launch. Further, Rtn. Jun Alvarez has volunteered to take part in the Finance Committee. These, indeed, are welcome additions to the fold of the committee as our centennial celebration, which coincides with that of Rotary in the Philippines and in Asia, is truly a colossal undertaking. Indeed, great things in Rotary are never the works of a single individual, but, by a team of Rotar-ians moving towards a common goal. Likewise, our centennial projects are shaping up as we move closer to our centennial. On this note, I wish to remind you of our 100 Years of Rotary: An Art Celebration which happens this evening at 6pm, North Court, Powerplant Mall, Rockwell, Makati City. Cocktails will be served. Let us all support this project which will immensely generate needed funds.

On the international front, a team of Manila Rotarians left yester-day and today for Bangkok to attend the 88th Charter Anniver-sary of our sister club, the Rotary Club of Bangkok which takes place tomorrow, September 14, 2018. On this note, I exhort each one of you to join our foreign trips to attend the events of our sister clubs, the Rotary Club of Kowloon East and the Rotary Club of Taipei which are both forthcoming.

4 PRESIDENTS’ CORNER RCMFI AND SAGIP KABATAAN DIRECTORS & OFFICERS 49

On interclub activities, our daughter club, the Rotary Club of Caloocan, invited us to attend their 59th Charter Anniversary on September 15, 2018 at the Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City. This is a good opportunity to rekindle ties and invite them to our centennial celebration.

On the fellowship front, I wish to thank Dir. Jackie Rodriguez, Fellowship Chair, for the successful fellowship of September celebrants last night, September 12, 2018, at the Elks Club, Makati City which also served as a welcome fellowship for new members. I also wish to invite you to attend our Rotary Club of Manila Oktoberfest hosted by our German and European mem-bers at the German Club in Makati City which takes place on October 17, 2018. Likewise, District 3810 will have a Mooncake Fellowship 2018 on September 29, 2018 at the Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City.

Towards the end of this month, on September 23, 2018, let us all participate in the ALAY LAKAD 2018, the funds of which go to the education of out-of-school youth. Assembly time is 4:30 pm at the Planetarium in Manila.

With all of these happening, the best is yet to come. In ONE CENTURY ONE MISSION ONE ROTARY, I remain.

March 16, 2018

Jesus M. PinedaPresident Elect, Rotary Club of Manila543 Arquiza cor, Grey Street, ErmitaManila City, Philippines

Dear Mr. Jesus M. Pineda,

We would like to invite you and your Rotarians to our Rotary Club of Taipei 70th charter on December 3, 2018 at the Mandarin Ori-ental Hotel in Taipei. It will be our honor to have our sister club Rotarians to join us for this special celebration. It will be a monu-mental event for our club as 70th year is a big birthday in Taiwanese tradition. I will be also be the first female president of our rotary club in 70 years.

Rotary Club of Taipei is the first club in Taiwan, ROC, which was chartered on October 9, 1948 by C.K. Yen, who was the former President of the Republic of China. We have around 100 members including honorary members from over 20 nationalities. Our club is extremely proud that our own member, Gary Huang, was the Ro-tary International President 2014-15.

We are very honor that our own PRIP Gary and the Rotary Inter-national President Elect Mark Maloney will be joining us on this special occasion. We hope we will also have the honor to have you and your Rotarians as our guests for our 70th charter.

Please kindly confirm your acceptance for the event. We have se-cured a special room rate with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Please contact our club for any question or help with arrangements. We hope to see you in Taipei soon. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours in Rotary,

Shirley TingPresident Elect, Rotary Club of TaipeiFor our fellow Manila Rotarians interested in attending, please get in touch with our Secretariat at 5271886/5271887 or coordinate with Chairman PD Ed Lee.

EYEBAGS

Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

Mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes is one of the aesthetic concerns that are com-mon as you age. The tissues around the eyes, including some of the muscles that support your eyelids become weak and start to sag as

you advance in age. Fat or adipose tissues that help support the eyes, and by gravity, can move to the lower eyelids, causing them to appear swollen. The lower part of the eyelid (lower orbit) is also a space or dependent portion where fluids can gather and build up, adding to the swelling.

Symptoms Bags under the eyes are also referred to as lower lid swelling. They show or demonstrate as swelling, dark discoloration, and saggy or loose skin located in the lower eyelids.

Factors that can worsen age-related lower lid swelling• Smoking• Lack o f sleep• Allergies• Too much salt intake• Too much artificial sweeteners• Dehydration• Heredity – under-eye bags can run in families

When do you need to see a doctor? You need a doctor’s visit if your lower lid swelling becomes se-vere. See your doctor if there is pain or itchy sensation or difficulty in blinking. When it is associated with redness of the eyes and when it is accompanied with puffiness of the upper eyelids or the surrounding area of the eyes, the condition may be clinical. After examination, your doctor will rule out possible clinical causes, such as allergy, in-fection, thyroid condition, and renal disease. Your personal physi-cian may refer you to an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) or to a spe-cialist in plastic surgery of the eyes (oculoplastic surgeon). Surgery for hereditary or age-related under-eye bags is called blepharoplasty.

Home remedies for lower lid swelling• Reduce your salt intake• Get more sleep• Drink plenty of water• Avoid smoking• Avoid environmental irritants and take doctor-prescribed allergy medicine• Apply dermatologist-prescribed anti-inflammatory creams• Apply cold compress (cold water, cucumbers, ice tea bags) or ice packs on the lower part of the eyes

The Search for The Outstanding Workers of the Republic (TOWER) Awards was founded in 1975 by the Rotary Club of Manila as an annual search for outstanding “blue collar” workers of the coun-try. Subsequently, it included in its coverage “white collar” (non-supervisory) workers. It aims to recog-nize the contributions to economic development of the legions of skilled workers who constitute the backbone of our country’s manpower capacity. The awards program transcended the confines of a Club’s concern because of its nationwide reach and significance in uplifting the Filipino workers’ morale and social status leading to greater prestige at the workplace – to the entrepreneur / employer and the colleagues, to the family and the commu-nity while enhancing individual career opportunities and promoting industrial peace.

CLUB ADMINISTRATION 3320 CENTENNIAL NEWS

Dear Fellow RCMers,

As you well know, our Centennial Year is upon us. In the past few years leading up to the present, your club leader-ship has planned and prepared several projects and events befitting this milestone in the history of our prestigious club. During the Town Hall Meeting last August 9, 2018, these activities were presented and broadly discussed. The responses of our members afterwards were inspiring. They want to do their share in making our centennial cel-ebrations truly memorable, not only for RCMers but also to all Rotarians of the Philippines and of Asia. Indeed, in various district functions recently, other Rotarians from all over the country have also expressed their enthusiasm in joining us in the celebration of 100 years of the Rotary movement in this part of the world. They are just waiting, in their own words, for the Rotary Club of Manila to lead them.

It is it time therefore, for us to take the challenge of lead-ing our fellow Rotarians. And for us to do this effectively, the participation of each RCM member is needed. At-tached is the list of our centennial committees and their projects. Also provided is the Program of Activities for the Centennial Week. I urge you to volunteer your par-ticipation in any of the activities. Together, we can attain greater achievements for our club!

Please indicate the committee(s) / event(s) that you are joining.

Yours in Rotary,

Pres. Susing Pineda
