SOFTWARE INDUSTRY

The India Software Industry has brought about a tremendous success for the

emerging economy. The software industry is the main component of the Information

technology in India. India's pool of young aged manpower is the key behind this

success story. Presently there are more than 500 software firms in the country which

shows the monumental advancement that the India Software industry has experienced.

It is expected that the India Software Industry will generate a total employment of

around four million people, which accounts for 7 per cent of India's total GDP, by the

end of year 2008. Today, the Software Industry in India exports software and services

to nearly 95 countries around the world. The share of North America (U.S. & Canada)

in India’s software exports is about 61 per cent. In 1999-2000, more than one third of

Fortune 500 companies outsourced their software requirements to India.

The Government has also played a vital role in the development of the India Software

Industry. The software industry being the main component of the IT Industry in India

has also helped the IT sector in India to grow at a good pace. As per the proceedings

taking place in the software industry the future of the India Software Industry looks

promising. In the present scenario most of the countries over the world have relied

upon Indian Software Company and firms or Software Companies for the software

development activities, as the country possesses a global competency in the IT sector.

The Software development company India comprises of businesses related to

the production and maintenance of computer software. The root of the Software

Industry of India lies in the IT phenomenon. Services regarding software such as

training, consulting and maintenance are a part of this ever-growing industry. The

Software companies are witnessing a rapid growth and offers lucrative job

opportunities making IT a premium career option for the youth. In fact it is one of the

fastest growing sectors of Indian industry.

India is emerging as a Global IT superpower. The success can be attributed to

factor advantage of high quality of software human resources. The Software Industry

IMK KOLLAM 7

Page 8: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Afi Technologies Pvt Ltd

has succeeded in converting this comparative advantage to increasing exports. More

and more companies are receiving the ISO 9000 certification and the day is not far

when India will have the highest number of ISO 9000 companies in the world. One

problem that software companies in India are facing is that of outflow of IT

professionals. This can be looked into by ensuring the conditions for investment and

growth in the industry are safeguarded by political stability. Wipro, HCL, Tata

Consultancy Services, Satyam computer Services, CMC, IBM etc are some of the

major Software development and software consulting firms or companies in India.

DEVELOPMENTS OF SOFTWARE INDUSTRY IN INDIAN

MARKET.

Software industry has a great scope in Indian market. Cities like Bangalore

have become the most preferred destination of all the big banners like Dell, Microsoft,

several Indian Multinational firms like Infosys Technologies, Wipro etc. The speedy

growth of IT sector is undoubtedly due to the efforts of Indian Government and other

developments that took in the other parts of the globe.

Another reason for the fast development of software industry is the availability

of cheap and technically skilled labour. It is due to the Indian Education System that

includes in its course curriculum the practical knowledge of the latest technology that

is developed in world along with the fluency in English language that imparts

compatibility in an Indian Technician to communicate and work throughout the

world. Further the geographical location of Indian serves it the advantage of being

exactly halfway round the world from the US west coast, which is another reason why

India is preferred destination of many big brands. Also, the presence of a large

number of Indians especially engineers in the US gave India an easy entry into the US

software market.

The Government policies like enactment of cyber laws to protect and safe

guard the interest of software companies in India also add more to the dominance of

India in IT sector. Setting up of Software Technology Park in India (STPI), by the

Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India to promote and facilitate

the software exports is another major step towards the growth of Indian IT sector. All

these reasons contribute or India to be as the most adored destination to many

companies.

IMK KOLLAM 8

Page 9: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Afi Technologies Pvt Ltd

Following are the major factors which have contributed for the development of IT

Industry in India.

• Rapidly improving infrastructure

• Large talent pool availability.

• High quality education.

• Low operating cost.

• Government supports.

Software Industry in Budget 2008

The Union Budget of India for the year 2008-2009 was announced on 29th

February 2008. Information Technology - the sunshine industry of India, has been

registering tremendous growth over the years. New budgetary allocation and new

policies for the development of the Indian software industries and its allied sectors

was a major focus area of budget 2008. The Indian Rupee appreciation factor and the

rising wage issue have been taken in to account during the latest Union budget of

India.

The apex body- NASSCOM and the IT-BPO industry of India have responded

positively to the Union Budget 2008-2009. The Department of Information

Technology (DIT), under the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of

India has been allocated Rs 1,680 crores in 2008-2009. Further, three new schemes

have been announced for the development of IT in India. Two schemes for the

establishment of one lakh broadband Internet-enabled 'Common Service Centers' in

rural areas and another scheme called 'State Wide Area Networks' (SWAN) have been

announced. The former scheme is supposed to get assistance from the Central

government of India. A third scheme for the 'State Data Centers' has been announced

with a budgetary allocation of Rs 275 billion. The IT and ITES sector of India is

expected to benefit from increased spending on education as allocated in the Indian

Union Budget 2008-2009, since this is expected to add to the present talent pool of

India.

The Indian Union Budget suggests that there is huge potential for further

growth of the Indian software industry, since its share in the global market is still

IMK KOLLAM 9

Page 10: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Afi Technologies Pvt Ltd

quite low. India should leverage the knowledge extensive cheap labor force that it has

to the fullest. Outsourcing business is growing at a steady pace and huge growth

opportunity still exists. Particularly, areas like consulting, package implementation

and systems integration holds tremendous opportunity along with traditional areas like

Software application development and maintenance. The main concern for the

Government is too much dependence on US market which imports around 60% to

65% of Indian Software Products. The back-lash against outsourcing jobs to India has

further lessened competitiveness amongst the clients. Further, high attrition rates due

to dissatisfaction and higher salary expectation is reducing profit margin of

companies. Talent crunch is also eating away profit, since a substantial amount of

money is being invested in imparting basic training. The present attrition rate of the

Indian IT industry stands at 18%, which is much higher in comparison to other Indian

industry.

SOFTWARE INDUSTRY IN KERALA

Information Technology, especially software is one industry, which has a lot

of potential in Kerala. At present it is vastly untapped. The following factors make

Kerala an increasingly good location for setting of off-shore software units.

a)Availability of good technical manpower

The quest for higher education has led to the development of a huge reservoir

of technically talented manpower. Due to the absence of strong players in this

geographical area, a majority of them have to take up assignments outside the state.

b)Non Polluting nature of the Industry

IT industry which is non polluting in nature can be set up with minimum

objections from the local populace.

SOFTWARE AS AN INDUSTRY

The government has recognized computer software as an industry. Hence, all

assistance available to industries will be automatically available to software

companies registered as industrial units

Infopark at Kochi

IMK KOLLAM 10

Page 11: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Infopark located at Kochi, is the new IT Park being developed by the

Government of Kerala. To set up this project, Government has transferred 100 acres

of land which is now under the ownership and possession of Infopark Kerala, which is

an independent Society fully owned by the Government.

Infopark has ambitious plans to become one of the major IT Parks in the

country. With this vision, it has been growing fast ever since its inception in 2004,

and within a short period of time, has attracted investments from IT majors like Tata

Consultancy Services, Wipro, Affiliated Computer Services, OPI Global, IBS

Software Services and US Technology. Because of the fast growth rate achieved and

strategic positioning of the Park in the upcoming city of Kochi (previously known as

Cochin), Infopark is well known among the IT/ITES investors as a very potential

destination. The city is one of the principal seaports of the country and is located in

the district of Ernakulam, about 220 kilometers north of the state capital,

Thiruvananthapuram. It has an estimated population of 600,000, with an extended

metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, making it the largest urban

agglomeration and the second largest city in Kerala after the capital.

INDIAN SOFTWARE COMPANIES

The rise of the Indian software industry as a dominant force in the global

software outsourcing market has been one of the most remarkable success stories of

the past 15 years. The industry has been able to achieve this market dominance in

large measure by relying on India’s large pool of low-cost, highly qualified,

technically proficient workforce. However, low-cost labor is not the sole factor for

the dominance of the industry in the worldwide software outsourcing market. The

industry would not have reached the enviable position of market leadership, had it not

managed to produce a stable of world class IT services firms. These firms have

methodically built up sophisticated software development processes and a robust

infrastructure to allow them to scale to global proportions.

The five leading Indian software outsourcing firms include Tata Consulting

Services (TCS), Wipro Technologies, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer

Services and HCL Technologies. Moving forward, the industry is evolving into a

complete IT solutions provider for global organizations. The eventual goal is to

GLOBAL CONSULTANTS

Traditional global suppliers of IT services, such as Accenture, Deloitte

Consulting, IBM Global Services, EDS, Cap Gemini Ernst and Young (CGE&Y), and

Keane have all established Offshore Delivery Centers (ODC), in various locations

throughout the world. These centers enable the companies to deliver a full range of

technology services including business-process outsourcing (BPO), application

development, and management and hosting, and technology infrastructure

development and outsourcing. They can offer same level of service at near the same

price points that the Indian offshore software companies. Thereby neutralizing the

threat posed by the Indian software companies.

CHAPTER IV

THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE

IMK KOLLAM 30

Page 31: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Afi Technologies Pvt Ltd

MARKET POTENTIAL- THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The market potential concept was born out of the awareness that a business

should start with the determination of consumer wants and end with the satisfaction of

those wants. The concept puts the consumer at both the beginning and the end of the

business cycle. It stipulates that any business should be organized around the

marketing function and its task should be one of anticipating, stimulating and meeting

consumer’s requirements. For knowing more about the consumer needs and wants

companies should make market study and researches.

Marketing research is defined as the systematic and objective search for an

analysis of information relevant to the identification and solution of any problem in

the field of marketing. Market study is a tool companies use in order to better

understand the environment in which they operate. It is one of the main steps in the

development of a marketing plan. The first step is to conduct market research or

gather information through direct mail, telemarketing, focus groups, online surveys,

etc. Then comes market analysis, which involves critically reviewing and organizing

the data collected so that it can be used in making strategic marketing decisions. “Just

as one would not build a house on sand, one should never undertake a marketing

program that is not built on a firm foundation of market knowledge.”.

David.j.Freiman stated in his book\ what Every Manager needs to know about

marketing. “It is remarkable and alarming how little mangers of businesses really

know about their markets and the other elements of their outside environments.”

A good market study should include information on industry trends, an

assessment of major competitors and their strategies, a review of the channels of

distribution, and a wide variety of data on current and potential customers. The

market analysis provides the input for the next step in developing a marketing plan-

market segmentation, or dividing an overall market into key customer subsets, or

segments, whose members share similar characteristics and needs. The company then

selects from among these segments the particular markets it wishes to target, and

creates a marketing plan that will appeal to the target customers. “small business that

IMK KOLLAM 31

Page 32: 51600628 MIS Project Afi

Afi Technologies Pvt Ltd

identify the needs of specific target markets-existing and potential customers who are

the focus of markeing efforts- and work to satisfy those needs, are more effective

marketsrs,” according to Gloria Green and Jeffrey Williams in marketing ;mastering

Your Small Business.

Most market analysis begins with a broad study of the overall industry and

concludes with a narrow definition of the company’s target market. Some of the

industry factors that might be mentioned in a market analysis include the relative

market share held by various competitors, the rte of new product introduction, the

technological environment, and the impact of significant laws or regulations. A

market analysis would also include ovrall market information such as sales history,

current demand, and expected future trends. It is particularly important to know

whether demand is increasing, decreasing, or remaining constant.

The next area of a market analysis involves creating an in-depth portrait of

customers. Through market research, the company tries to answer such questions as:

who are the primary decisions makers and purchasers; what are their main motivating

factors, and when and where do they tend to buy? The key is to understand how

customers make their purchasing decisions in order to be able to influence those

decisions. Market research might assess such demographic features as age, gender,

income level, educational background, financial situation, marital status, household

size, and ethnic or religious background. Once this information has been broken

down through market analysis, the company then creates a detailed description of the

most desirable segment of the market to be included in the marketing plan. The

market analysis should demonstrate why the target market chosen is more favorable

than other segments, since the company will be investing its limited resources in

marketing to that target market.
