    is important. Having a

plan in advance is a sureway to reduce the potentialstress of changes after your

Soldiers returns home, andany less time they have to

spend planning after theyget back is more time theyget to spend at home doingother things.

Lastly, I would like toextend a very well de-served thank you id due to

the families of the 511thwho participated in the Ju-

    ly 4

    th

box sendoff from allthe Soldiers in 511th. TheSoldiers enjoyed the treats

and the posters are stillhanging in the platoon are-

as as reminders of homeand our families. The

FRG co-leaders have donean outstanding job, and weappreciate all the support

    of our families and theFRG.

    At the Breach!

    CPT Walker

    Reaper Family,

July has come to aclose, August is just begin-

ning, and your Sapperscontinue to take on any

challenge that comes theirway. As many of you are

probably aware throughconversations with yourdeployed loved ones, the

number of missions we are participating in has in-creased. I would urge you

to consider it a good thing;the Soldiers are able to

keep their skills sharp, which keeps them safe, and part of our increase is in

preparation for assistingour fellow Soldiers as they

begin to leave the country.Getting Soldiers home to

their families is always agood thing, and I could not

be more proud of the im-

portant role our unit playsin the successful draw-

    down.

    Speaking of drawdown

    - I understand that as theyear continues to progress

rumors about dates of ourreturn will increase; Ive

    heard a few already. Its

perfectly understandablethat the longer we are awayfrom our home and loved

ones the more we want tobelieve any potential short-ening of our timeline. However it is better for us,

    both at home and forward,

to plan for a full twelvemonth tour and be pleas-antly surprised than em-

brace hearsay and end updisappointed. I can prom-

ise you all that the momentmyself or the 1SG have

concrete dates for our arri-val in Kuwait and a reason-able timeline for our return

we will share them with theFRG that same day.

As you all are aware we

have crossed the halfwaymark in our deployment. Iwould encourage you to

speak with your loved onesabout their futures after we

return to Fort Campbell.Though I know it seemslike a long way off it will

be hear all too soon andhaving a family plan re-

garding schools, changes induty station, or retirement

Notes from the 1st SGTHello to the families and friendsof the 511th. Time is going byreally fast! We are just about atthe 7-month mark. I really en-

joyed myself on R&R. I got a lotaccomplished during the 15 daysthat I was stateside. It was greathaving a sit-down with membersof the Family Readiness Group, theCompany Rear-Detachment, and

key personnel in the staff sectionsof the 326th Rear Detachment. Most importantly, I spent time withmy immediate and extended fami-ly and friends in Chattanooga.Again, I want to thank all of you foryour continued support and verykind words to bring back to my

Soldiers here in Iraq. It reallymeans a lot, and I look forward toseeing all of you again very soon.Im happy to tell you that the 511thcontinues to do great things herein Iraq. Im truly proud of this com-pany, and the way that our Sol-diers conduct themselves on adaily basis. Some days dont al-ways go as planned. Very oftenobstacles are thrown in our waythat causes us to make adjust-ments on the fly. It could beweather, changes in enemy activi-ty, or small issues with our equip-ment. Trust me; Murphys Lawhas visited us on many occasions.

We have always remainedflexible, and we have main-tained our ability to adapt andovercome. The Soldiers in thiscompany absolutely refuse tolose. Often I ask myself Is itworth it? To be quite honest, some days it is really a struggleto come to a conclusion, evenafter 22 years and a number ofdeployments. Talking to leadersand Soldiers in the 511th, weshare the same thoughts. WhatI gather from most Sappers inthe company, they think about itafter they do P.T., take a show-er, and go lie down and relax. Its after talking to your room-mate, hearing your wifes or

girlfriends voice over thephone, watching your kids growbefore your eyes on web cam,or receiving a heartfelt letterfrom a lovedone. You ask yourself Is itreally worth it? Well, I foundmy answer on R&R in a numberof ways. I can only hope thatmy Soldiers experience thesame thing. Its the standingovations in the airport; peoplewho you dont even know com-ing up to you asking to take aphoto with them; others wantingto shake your hand, thankingyou for your service to our

country; old veterans offering to buyyou a beer; little kidsgiving you a hug and telling you thatyoure a hero. Its going to yourhome town, eating at your favoriterestaurant, and the staff there tellsyou that the meal was free. Most ofthese great Americans really haveno clue of what is really going onover here in Iraq other than whatthey see on the news. Actually, some could really care less. All theyknow is that you are risking your lifeand your family is making sacrificesin order for you to be here and get itdone. Its seeing all of the thingsand places that make our countrythe greatest country in the world. Isit worth it? Hell yea, it is! Those

were just a few things that I men-tioned. However, there are manymore I will share with my Soldiersthat can provide them with evenmore motivation to get up and do itall over again the next day with agreat sense of pride in knowingwhat they will eventually go home,to. I will conclude this newsletterwith thanking you for all that you doand the sacrifices that you are mak-ing.
