GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY

We are here to support the academic, social and

emotional development of our students to be resilient

GRADE 5/6 CAMP Our Year 5/6 students recently returned from four fabulous days at Lady Northcote Camp, which is some distance into the wild blue yonder beyond Bacchus Marsh. The reports from the children have been fantastic; it was a very successful camp. The staff also sang the praises of the students for the manner in which they participated in the camp. I would like to publicly thank the staff involved in the camp - Mrs Bentata-Grimm, Ms McGregor, Ms Harley, Ms Taylor, Miss Sommerfeld, Mrs Roberts, Mr Champion, Mr Acklom and Mr Douma who oversaw the organisation. I know only too well how much time and effort goes into the organisation and planning to ensure that the camp is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. As well, the time and energy required while on camp with all staff being on duty 24 hours a day is a huge commitment. The weather wasn’t the kindest for much of the time but this didn’t dampen the spirits of our students who enjoyed immensely the numerous outdoor activities specially designed to engage them while at the same time developing initiative, risk taking and team work. When sharing some of their thoughts and feelings, the students spoke proudly of overcoming nerves and uncertainty, making new friends and loving the opportunity to shine in this learning environment. I hope the mums and dads have enjoyed sharing some of the highlights with their children. LAST DAY OF TERM The last day of term 2 is this Friday, 28th June. The children finish school at 2.30pm; they will be dismissed from their classrooms. I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing all again on Monday, 15th July when we

to our school and to seeking meaningful feedback in terms of setting purposeful future goals and priorities for our school in relation to student learning, student wellbeing, transitions and pathways. Further information will be made available next term. LOVELY ADDITIONS TO OUR SCHOOL Four large ‘café style’ awnings have been

installed onto our year 5 portables. These look terrific and offer an enhanced outside learning space as well as a little protection from the elements. A big thank you to our PFA for funding this project and more broadly our families for generously sup-porting our fundraising efforts to enable such projects as this to occur.

We have just purchased 48 new iPads to

allow each grade level to permanently share 6 each with preps having 12. This is on top of the set of 32 which are used across the school, particularly in ICT lessons. Earlier this year, we replaced 22 desktops in preps and upgraded our library computers. Whilst we dedicate a healthy portion of our budget to ICT, your support as a community in contributing to the voluntary ICT option on the annual school fees, enables us to provide a more generous allocation to expanding our resources.

FOOTSTEPS DANCE CONCERT Our dance lessons will begin next term starting on the first Tuesday. The children will learn several dances in preparation for our whole school concert which this year will be held at Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University. The concert this year will be a single event on the night of Wednesday, 9th October from 7pm to 9:30 pm. This is in the first week of term 4. We trust everyone will enjoy this change of venue to cater for our growing size. The Footsteps Company who will teach the children and oversee the concert have a fine reputation and worked wonderfully with us six years ago when we undertook the same venture. Most of you will have paid the concert levy of $35 which was part of your school fees. This covers all student costs for the lessons, rehearsal and concert. Tickets for parents and visitors will be sold prior to the event at a price which will be reasonable but has yet to be determined.

commence another great term. I hope you’re able to take the opportunity to rest a little, enjoying a change of pace on these cooler days with family and friends. LICE ALERT We have again had several incidences of head lice in the school recently. Please check your child’s hair regularly and treat it if necessary. A head lice treatment fact sheet is available at the office. HALF YEAR STUDENT REPORTS & PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS It is hard to believe that the first half of the school year is nearly over. It only seems like yesterday that the first day of school was here and everyone was in new classrooms and mak-ing new friends. Six months later it is time to look back and see the progress that has occurred, as well as looking forward to setting new goals for the second half of the year. Half year reports will be sent home to all families tomorrow. This report will provide a snapshot in time of your child’s achievements as well as what the school and you the parents can do to support your child’s future learning. This semester teachers reported against the AusVELS in Literacy, Numeracy and History. A new software reporting package has been developed by DEECD to support this. Parent – Teacher interviews are scheduled for Wednesday 7th August from 2pm. Details of these arrangements will be sent home when we return next term. Please pop this date in your diary. REVIEWING OUR SCHOOL AND WRITING OUR NEXT STRATEGIC PLAN 2013 is a year of review for Carnegie Primary with our last Strategic Plan written for the years 2010 till 2013. This review will commence in term 3 with us first completing a school self- evaluation. At this time we will look at formal accountability documentation about CPS and seek feedback from staff, parents and students. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on our achievements, our strengths and areas where improvement is needed. On completion of our self-evaluation, an external reviewer will work with us to offer independent and expert advice on our progress. We will then be in a position to develop and write our next Strategic Plan. We are very much looking forward to finding opportunities to obtain feedback from our parent community in relation PUBLICATION No. 10—25/06/2013

Grose Presentations RESILIENCE ROBBERS - Parenting ideas by Michael Grose, Parent Educator All parents have the best of intentions when raising kids. Wanting what is best for kids can cause parents to make decisions that are not

always in their children’s long-‐term best interests. If you buy the line that the promotion of resilience is in the best interests of kids then check out the following common parenting mistakes that reduce children’s resilience. Robber # 1: Fight all their battles for them Nothing wrong with going into bat when kids struggle or meet with difficulty inside or outside school but make sure this is the last resort, not the first option. Resilience notion # 1: Give kids the opportunity to develop their own resourcefulness. Robber # 2: Make their problem, your problem Sometimes parents can take too much responsibility for issues that are really up to children to work out or decide. Here’s a clue if you are wondering what I am talking about: a jumper is something a mother puts on her son when she is cold! Resilience notion # 2: Make their problem, their problem. Robber # 3: Give kids too much voice In this era of giving children a voice it is easy to go overboard and allow them too much of a say in what happens to them. Kids often take the easy option to avoid hard or unpleasant situations. Resilience notion # 3: Make decisions for kids and expect them to adjust and cope. Robber # 4: Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on kids to perform Expectations about success and achievement

are important. Too low and kids will meet them. Too high and kids can give up. Too much and kids can experience anxiety. Resilience notion # 4: Keep expectations in line with children’s abilities and don’t put exces-sive pressure on them. Robber # 5: Let kids give in too easily Resilient learners link success with effort. They don’t give up because they don’t like a teacher

or when confronted with multi-‐step or more complex activities. Similarly they don’t bail out of a sporting term half way through the season because the team is not winning or they are not enjoying it. Resilience notion # 5: Encourage kids to complete what they have started even if the results aren’t perfect. Robber # 6: Neglect to develop independence Don’t wait until they are teenagers to develop the skills of independent living. Start early and promote a broad skill set so that they can look after themselves if you are not around. Resilience notion # 6: Don’t routinely do for kids what they can do for themselves. Robber # 7: Rescue kids from challenging or stretch situations There are many times kids are put in situations that are outside their comfort zones for a time. For instance, giving a talk, singing at the school concert or going on school camp may be challenges for some kids. They are all situations that kids usually cope with so show your confidence in them and skill them up rather than opt for avoidance. Resilience notion # 7: Overcoming challenges enables kids to grow and improve. Sometimes the manageable hardships that children experience such as a friend moving away, not being invited to a party or completing a difficult school project are fabulous learning opportunities.

They help kids to stretch and grow. Dealing with them effectively also teaches kids that they are capable of coping when they meet some of life’s curve balls. And that is a huge lesson to learn at any age. For more ideas subscribe to Happy Kids my weekly email guide at Parentingideas.com.au.

Portfolio Sharing Afternoon A big THANK YOU to all our special families and friends that came to

our portfolio sharing afternoon last week.

We were so proud to see so many students showing great confidence in

presenting their portfolios. It is obvious that all the students felt a

great sense of pride and empowerment as they lead conversations with

their parents and families.

We know it meant a great deal to our students and community.

Science and Sustainability News

Our Productive Veggie Patch! Last week Sustainability Club harvested a fantastic broccoli crop and enjoyed cooking and eating it with cheesy sauce. I think we have a few new converts to veggie eating!

It is a great idea to grow your own vegetables at home. No chemicals and so fresh! Even better if you make your own super compost like we do. There are lots of web-sites showing you how to make compost. It is healthy and nutritious for your plants and saves valuable organic materials going to landfill. Come and help us make Thai coriander and silverbeet chicken balls this Thursday at lunchtime.

Wildlife Corridor Project Children are continuing to plant indigenous species to enhance biodiversity in our school grounds for the 'Locals Creating Widlife Passages Project'. This project, involving over 20 habitat sites in Glen Eira, Kingston and Bayside municipalities, recently won a 2013 United Nations Australia World Environment Day Award. Two thousand indigenous plants have been planted which is of great benefit to local wildlife. Congratulations to Bentleigh West Primary School and CERES for developing and overseeing the Project. Grade 3/4 Inquiry Learning Excursion

On Wednesday June 12th and Friday June 14th the Grade 3 and 4 students went on their first excursion this year to the Ian Potter Centre and the Immigration Museum. This was to further deepen our understandings and knowledge for our inquiry learning this term about Australian history. At the Ian Potter Centre we spent time exploring the Indigenous gallery to gain a better knowledge of how art can tell stories and share history. Then at the Immigration museum we got our own suitcase and investigated the many reasons people have journeyed to Australia. Even though the weather was a bit gloomy we all had a fantastic time! Here are some of the highlights:

Written by Kate S, Sahil K, Jasmin K and Nicky M

Tony 4A – “I really liked the

Aboriginal paintings.”

Michael 3B – “It was

terrific getting the train

into the city.”

Arhan 3C – ‘I enjoyed sketching the

paintings at the Ian Potter Centre.”

Gayathri 4B – “The ship at the

Immigration Museum was

really cool.”

Charlie 3A – “It was all

fantastic! I especially liked

the suitcases we got at the

Immigration Museum.”

TERM 3 PREVIEW

Term 3 is shaping up to be full of exciting PFA happenings! Following on from the

success of last year we will once again be doing “Hot Chocolate Wednesdays”

starting in week 2 of the term. The children can bring in a plastic cup and buy a hot

chocolate after their lunch on a Wednesday.

There will also be a Student “Pyjama Party” Disco which is bound to be just as much

fun as last year’s Halloween disco! This will be in early September.

Early term 3 we will be running a Bakers Delight Raffle where you will have the chance

to win one of 6 $100 vouchers for Bakers Delight Carnegie. Further details will be out

early in the term.

We are also currently finalising details for a “grown-ups” social/Auction night which

will most likely be held in early term 4. We are aiming for this to also be a celebration

for the school’s 125th year.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and we’ll see you in Term 3!
