A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
The picture on the front page depicts the Trinity, Father Son and Holy Spirit celebrated on 31 May. During this period we also celebrate All Saints’ Day (7 June) and St Peter’s Day (29 June). We also have St Swithin’s Day (15 July). On Saturday 13 June Simon Crook is organising a Parish Walk at 11.00am (see Page 13). On Saturday 27 June at 3.00pm we have an Ordination Service at St Peter’s for several candidates including Simon our own Curate (see Page 34) and he will conduct his first Eucharist on Sunday 28 June. The Holme Valley Singers are giving a concert with a visiting choir from Italy on Sunday 19 July at 3pm in the church (see Page 20). Now that the long awaited windows have been created and installed in the Lady Chapel, dedicated to the well-loved Livingstones, there is a Service of Dedication (see Page 17) on Sunday 2 August. We have the new PCC for 2015/2016 on Page 7. We also have an article on the church’s pop-up shop which was a success last year (see Page 9 and the back page) and looks like being a regular event for us. We need things to sell and people to sell them. Join in the fun. I was moved by the news recently of a complete stranger rewarding a young mother for keeping her child under control in public. For a while now my wife and I have adopted the policy of doing one good deed every day, well maybe not every day. It occurred to me we should all try this. Examples such as letting a car out of a side road into the main traffic and giving a motorist your unused up parking ticket come to mind. Try it; it is quite fulfilling.

Simon Says
If I were to ask you to describe a close family member or someone who
you have known for a long time as well as their physical form you would
after a while begin to tell stories about that person as you began to paint a
fuller picture. How they get on with other people, the way they interact all
may play a part in the description. And so character traits, looks,
dimensions and even the relationships themselves help to construct how
we are viewed by others.
In the Christmas season we look at God’s incarnation, God being with
people; Easter celebrates the cross and resurrection of Jesus and Pentecost
or Whit marks the work of the Holy Spirit. We now begin the seasons of
Trinity. Just look at the diary titles for the
Sundays in June, Trinity 1, 2 & 3 etc.
The season of Trinity is a time to learn
about God in all the ways in which we
encounter him. Over a long period over
the summer months it is as if through the
Sunday readings we are having someone
described to us - so it is we find different
views of God being revealed.
God the Father is seen as creator, wishing
for us to be born and reborn, created and
recreated into his pattern. So although we think of God Almighty, we also
see him present with the people of the Old Testament. Look around and
see the beauty around. The bible is filled with people’s experience of him.
Real people who quite often fail to reach the standard he wants them to
reach. But God the Father does not leave them or us to their or our failing
devices.
It is Jesus who gives us a way back. The experience of the cross is God
living and dying so that we may find a path always open. Jesus is a path
that bridges the failure of humanity. At the cross the void between us and
God was bridged. Want to find God? Look to the son - who redeemed, in
6
other words, bought us for the father. ‘There is a Redeemer’ is the hymn
which tells of Jesus being God, leading us to the Father, a price beyond
understanding being paid at the cross.
The Holy Spirit is seen by Christians as the attribute of God’s that
whispers to us of God the Father and of Jesus, who empowers us to make
the search, who directs the knowledge of God to find through the Jesus,
God the Father.
When we pray we can use God the Trinity. Creation, redemption,
empowering – attribute of God which focus our minds. God the Father,
God the Son, God the Holy Spirit; three ways of receiving God into our
lives. Ignore either, look to each and one in the same. The fuller picture of
how we perceive God.
Each Sunday morning the readings for the day are printed in the Service
Sheets which are handed out before each service. These are followed as
the lesson is read and many of the congregation give them back at the end
of the service.
HOWEVER, you could always take the sheet home and re-read the text
during the week. Alternatively you could take an extra one home and give
it to a friend or neighbour.
Spares are on the back table to be used!

POP-UP SHOP As many of you will remember,
St Peter’s occupied an empty
shop unit in the Pack Horse
Centre last year with the aim of
making some money for the
church and also raising our
profile within the town.
We found that there were two
other major spin offs to the
week. Firstly, the exercise
involved the whole of St Peter’s family. People donated goods, carried
boxes to and from, helped to sell in the shop, some came to have a look,
and this attracted others in to see what was happening. This all meant that
everyone had contributed and were interested to hear how things had
gone. The second spin off was the mission part of the work which was a
bigger aspect than we had first anticipated. Many conversations took
place about the church building, the Saturday coffee mornings, “Back to
Church Sunday” and the shop itself. Many passing folk just wanted to
stay and chat a while. It is not known how many people had been
touched by our efforts, but it was very clear that we should not
underestimate this aspect of the week’s work.
Because of the success of this venture we are planning to do the same
again in September: the provisional dates are Monday 14th to Saturday
19th. Jane and I are going to coordinate the week again, but we will need
items to sell and others to help work in the shop during the week. We
want to begin to collect saleable items as soon as possible, anything will
do (no electricals or worn clothes); please bring to Church labelled “pop-
up shop”. If you want to join in the fun of selling then put these dates in
your diary and you will be able to sign up to help nearer the time.
Thanks to all in anticipation.
Mike Bembridge.

Christian Jokes
A man was coming out of church one day and the preacher was standing at the door as is usual to shake hands. He grabbed the man by the hand and pulled him to one side and said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!” The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Vicar.” The Vicar questioned, “How come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter then?” He whispered back, “I’m in the secret service!”
A Vicar was talking to one of his parishioners. He said, “When you get to my age you spend a lot more time thinking about the hereafter.” “Why do you say that?” enquires the parishioner. The Vicar replies, “Well, I often find myself going into
a room and thinking what did I come in here after?”

Simon C’s Page PRAYER
This edition of my articles on prayer draws on a book that is not
specifically about prayer. One of my fellow students who trained with me
at Mirfield, Katy Magdalene Price (notice how she stresses the
“Magdalene”!) writes of her confusion in her early Christian experience:
“The same word, ‘prayer’, seemed to refer to talking and to being silent,
to mental images and to absence of images – in fact to almost anything.”
And that is the thing with prayer, it is many things in our lives. It is, in
fact, our whole lives. And yet it has moments of focus; pulses that propel
us forward and keep us orientated towards God. These need to be kept in
balance: corporate worship to keep us grounded as the body of Christ,
private prayer to be with God in our inmost selves, words to express that
which is within, silence to take us where words won’t, images to stir the
soul, formal prayer to give us discipline and take us beyond our emotional
whims, informal prayer to express that which is uppermost for us, prayer
at a set time to dedicate ourselves to our Lord, prayer as it pops into your
head to respond to life as it happens, and so on. All of these are prayer,
and all of them are important. With enough of these “boosts”, our lives
become more prayerful, so that when we are doing mundane chores and
tasks, when we are immersed in the nitty-gritty of our 24/7 lives, there is
something else going on as well.
Try to give yourselves a boost, a pulse that gives you a rhythm that is
more in tune with God. Set aside a time to pray
(daily or as you can), use a format such as we
published during Lent, use words, and try also
being in silence with God using no words. Do
it when you want to and when you don’t. And
I’d love it if you tell me how you get on.

A dedication service is planned to take place on Sunday 2 August (see 17). North Wall. This phase of the work is now completed, but there is still some outstanding work left over because of the diverting of some funding to urgent unexpected work. We still await a faculty from the Diocese for the rest of the lighting. Car Park. Nothing to report from the negotiations with the developers of the Kirkgate Centre, the main issues being the capital value of the land and compensation for loss of revenue as well as alternative parking for the church. A-Board. Doesn’t it look great: a really good asset for the church aiming to attract more passing trade into the church when we are open and especially during services and coffee days. Wish List. This is constantly being reviewed by the PCC as the smaller jobs get done and we think of other work which needs doing, funds permitting. PCC. MORNING PRAYER O God, Lord of all good life, help me to use today well. Help me to use today: To know you a little better; To do my work a little more diligently; To serve my fellowmen a little more lovingly;
To make myself, by your help, a little more like Jesus. Help me make today a day of progress in my life, and to become a little more like what you want me to be. This I ask for Jesus’ sake. Amen William Barclay ‘More Prayers for the Common Man’ (Harper Collins)

Welcome to Holme Valley Singers
The Holme Valley Singers are giving a concert a with visiting choir
from Italy on Sunday 19 July at 3pm in the church.
Holme Valley Singers have been singing together for pleasure since
1975. The choir is held in high esteem in music circles in the area. It has
to its credit successes in the Sainsbury, Blackpool, Freckleton,
Morecambe, Peterborough, North Wales Festivals and nearer to home,
the Mrs Sunderland competition. The choir has also taken part in the
BBC Daily Service and, on an exchange visit to Belgium, enjoyed
singing in Bruges Cathedral.
The choir has around 35 members and rehearses once a week at
Holmfirth High School during school term time, on Tuesday evenings
7pm to 9pm. It is always interested in finding new members, particularly
tenors, baritones and basses, and encourages anyone wishing to join, to
sing with them for a four week trial.

My Often Town Centre Walk Whenever I walk past the Parish Church and down towards the Beast Market, I think of when, in Town on Sundays in general, the BBC was filming Summer Wine, the cast stayed at Central Lodge, the former Huddersfield Hotel in that area. I often saw and met actor Peter Sallis and sometimes Frank Thornton and Stephen Lewis walking towards the hotel. I once walked with Frank Thornton to the front of the hotel and saw him safe inside as well as Peter Sallis. I once saw actress Jean Alexander walking from the station towards the hotel. ORDINATION
Over the years Huddersfield Parish Church has been the starting point for
the ministries of numerous curates. Seldom though has a curate been
ordained within St. Peter’s. More usually, ordinations occur in the
cathedral of the respective diocese. With the creation of the new Diocese
of West Yorkshire and the Dales and more specifically the Huddersfield
Episcopal Area, we now have a cathedral-less area of the diocese. Major
services in Kirklees and Calderdale will be moving between the larger
churches – namely Dewsbury, Halifax and Huddersfield. This year the
ordination of priests will be in Huddersfield Parish Church.
On Saturday 27th June 2015 six serving curates or deacons will be
ordained priest by the Bishop of Huddersfield, the Right Revd Dr
Jonathan Gibbs. The service is a public act and many guest are expected,
filling St. Peter’s.
The candidates are:
Simon Crook St. Peter’s, Huddersfield Parish Church.
Katherine Currie All Saints High Hoyland and Clayton West
and St. Augustine, Scissett.
