Wing has many involvements

Our annual awards dinner is this UTA. Our input ofawards packages has greatly improved over past yearswith great improvement on the quality of the packagesand for that my thanks to all that took the extra time tosubmit packages. Our decoration process is also improv-ing, I seem to have a steady stream of packages to ap-prove and sign. But we are still behind on this process.We as a wing have numerous individuals with no decora-tions over the last 10 years and many with no decorationsat all. We need to improve this statistic, because this sta-tistic is tied to individuals. For those supervisors that haveimproved, my thanks, but many still need to give that littlebit of effort to pat your individuals back with a decoration.

Our security forces will be mobilizing at the end ofthis month and we need to support this deployment. Theyare the wings top priority. If they need your help please usea little more effort in your support, if you are not in the pro-cess of getting them out of town and see a security forcestroop please offer them a thanks for their service. Kim andmy prayers are with all of you for your safe return.

This month we have our first local exercise. We needeveryone’s help to make the process as real as possible.Each and every one of you needs to show a sense of ur-gency and safety in everything we do. This exercise isthe first of our ongoing plan to make sure we are able todeploy at a moments notice. We are a country at war andcan be called on at any time. This is an overall change inthe way this wing does it’s business, everything we doshould be pointed at an eventual deployment. We will nolonger wait four years to prepare for an ORI we need tobe ready continuously.

Many of you will be traveling this upcoming Thanks-giving weekend. Please be safe in you travels and returnsafely. We need each and everyone of you.

With the summer ORI behind thewing and the final IG report received,wing officials are taking a long view ap-proach towards maintaining wing readi-ness.

Preparing for the ORI was tough,officials said. Certainly the wing main-tained a strong, proactive approach ofsupporting real world operational issuesbut honestly the wing allowed itself tomove away from aggressive war skilltraining exercises as held in years past.

“In spite of the past year’s heavyORE/ORI schedule and mini-training ex-ercises, we still ended up with a lessthan glowing showing on our ATSOskills. We had quite a few positive ar-eas shine through on our report, but weallowed our ATSO skills to become toorusty,” said Maj. Bonnie Tremblett, alead planner for the ORI.

“What’s done is done,” Tremblettsaid. “We don’t have time to debatewhat happened. The training exercisesbeing planned and the deployment exer-cise set for March is not ‘ORI - PartII’. The ORI is over.”

Rather than focus on the past, wingplanners are shoring up a 2008 trainingschedule that will focus on helping wingmembers refine needed skills while re-developing a continuous warrior mindset.“We are focused on maintaining thoseskills we’ve learned and to improve theones we need to improve,” Tremblettsaid.

Last month focused on Task Qualifi-cation Training with chemical suit don-ning and transition point training alongwith weapons refresher highlights. Thismonth members will participate in a homestation ability to survive and operate(ATSO) exercise currently being devel-oped by the exercise eval team. Offi-cials state that all wing members needto carry their AFMAN 10-100 Airman’sManual with them at all times with theexception of PT training.

In January the wing will hold anotherhome station ATSO exercise, a recallexercise, more chemical suit TQT, prac-tice PAR team procedures and UXOidentification in addition to proper chemi-cal detection paper procedures.

February’s UTA will see more chem.suit TQT and AFMAN and Rules of En-gagement testing.

All this activity builds to the Marchexercise deployment. “We’re deployingabout 400 wing personnel to Gulfport,Miss, for field ATSO training,” Tremblettsaid. “We’re not simulating an overseasdeployment, but we will have an exer-cise scenario for specific ATSO chal-lenges that will gauge wing member re-sponse. While no HQ AMC/IG inspec-tors will be present, senior 4th Air Forcerepresentatives will observe the exercise.

“Our goal here is to have 4th AF giveus an honest appraisal and validate thatthe wing is making great strides towardwartime readiness and we will maintainour momentum. We believe we’re on theright track; we will continue and we planon demonstrating that, no matter who isobserving,” Tremblett said.

“This new training schedule turns thepage for our wing. We’re starting downa new path that will help us maintain arazor edge we need to maintain to sup-port this battle rhythm,” she said.

Thanksgiving

September, October, and Novem-ber are months that I love (almost asmuch as the coming of Spring). Thesummer is over, the weather turnscooler, football season is going fullspeed, I celebrate lots of family birth-days, and my anniversary. I love to sitoutside and just see what God is doingduring the Fall changes. Just last nightI put on a coat and sat out on my deckand watched the moon and the starscome out.

And of course, Thanksgiving is justaround the corner. It is a time to con-template what’s happened during theyear and what I’m thankful for. As Ireflected, I realized that the 507th hashad some hard times this year. We’velost members to death, to retirementor to just moving on. We’ve also hadWing members who’ve lost familymembers and friends too. And thenthere were those who’ve been sick or

injured and had to spend time in the hos-pital, had a serious relationship end, orstruggled with other family issues. Therewas the ORI. And now some of you arefacing a deployment. So maybe that iswhere you are this Thanksgiving and youare thinking, “What is there to be thank-ful for?” Well my response is an em-phatic, “Plenty!”

You see, three years ago this monthI came to the 507th for the first time. Iwas where some of you may be now. Iwas broken emotionally and didn’t seeany hope of life getting better. My wifeof 24 years had just signed divorce pa-pers so she could be with someone else.I was now a single parent of two teen-agers with no full-time job and lots ofdoubts about what life would bring. Infact, I was a little bit mad at God foreven bringing me to the 507th…as if Iwas going to be able to do anything goodfor the Wing or for myself. I didn’t thinkI had a lot to be thankful for that Thanks-giving!

But three years later I can lookback and see God’s hand working inmy life. The 507th offered me an op-portunity to focus my heart and mindand energy on something greater thanmyself and my own sorrows. Thefriends I’ve made have helped methrough the tough times. And I can’teven begin to say enough good thingsabout my Chapel staff and how muchthey supported me all along the way.Now, three years later I am thankfuland full of hope.

So don’t give up! God is still in con-trol even if it doesn’t seem like it. TheApostle Paul once wrote (from prisonno less): “Do not be anxious aboutanything, but in everything, by prayerand petition, with thanksgiving, presentyour requests to God. And the peaceof God, which transcends all under-standing, will guard your hearts andyour minds in Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:6-7)

Quarterly winners selected

Master Sgt. Sharon LochmanSenior NCO of the QuarterSergeant Lochman, assistant chief,

Education and Training Office, coor-dinated 73 upgrade actions, resultingin the award of valuable skill level pro-gression of our members. She moni-tored training progression of 1,000-plusenlisted personnel and oversaw train-ing programs for 24 organizations.

Lochman managed the deploymentcontrol center personnel function, de-ploying 364 members for the wingreadiness exercises.

She managed the AFRC NCOLeadership Development Coursewhich produced 16 graduates readyto lead their sections.

Lochman screened 44 eligible Sea-soning Training Program (STP) train-ees; processed 26 members in the pro-gram which has resulted in $249,000 to-date. She spearheaded implementationof the STP for non-prior service per-sonnel in 17 units.

Lochman is an avid reader of self-help books in communication and busi-ness to increase her knowledge andapply it at work and successfullycompleteda CLEP test to further hereducational goals.

Tech. Sgt. Daniel BostwickNCO of the Quarter

Sergeant Bostwick, readinesscraftsman, 507th Civil EngineeringSquadron, provided Wing commanderan accountability tool to track units’CBRNE training, ensured survivabil-ity of 1,100-plus force. He brokeredfor $15,000 to purchase trainingJSLIST chemical ensembles for wingAirmen, which improved readiness.He implemented policy that holds unitsaccountable for CBRNE training no-shows; preserving scarce wing re-sources.

Bostwick was requested by namefor the 4th AF EET to evaluate theATSO portion of another wing’s ORE,prepping them for their ORI. He is awing leader; developed comprehen-sive ATSO plan, ensuring wing’s readi-ness for next year’s exercise.

Off-duty Bostwick attends collegefull-time. He is enrolled in and activelypursuing completion of the NCOAcademy course by correspondence.

Bostwick is a member of local Par-ent Teacher Organizations, leader inhis church and active with communityactivities.

Senior Airman Dustin BacaAirman of the Quarter

Airman Baca is a satellite commu-nications journeyman with the 35thCBCS. He provided joint forces sup-port in Iraq, aided in the setup of 20-plus temper tents which housed 200Army warfighters. Airman Baca acti-vated emergency radio link in OP-ERATION Iraqi Freedom, regainingcontrol of 39K miles of airspace.

He managed 21 trucks as squad-ron vehicle control officer; ensuringrapid response for emergency repairof CF4 infrastructure faults.

Baca broadened his experiencewith an AEF deployment to Kirkuk AirBase, Iraq. He cross-trained on LMRradios/PA system. He also took theinitiative to start the Airman Leader-ship Course; completing two of threevolumes during a deployment ot Iraq.He is pursuing an Associates Degreein Electronic Systems Technology.

Baca participated in base projectsto pick up trash and mow grass, Heprotected 7,000 personnel as he vol-unteered during time off for 15 real-world post attack reconnaissancesweeps.

AFRC IWS Alert system delivers alertsby Tech. Sgt. Paul D. LaFleur

In the following weeks we will be attempting to achieveInitial Operations Capability (IOC) with the new AFRC Emer-gency Management System (IWSAlerts). If you have loggedin to your work PC recently you have probably noticed a smallpurple globe in your taskbar’s system tray, this is the AFRCIWSAlerts icon.

The AFRC EMS provides personnel with emergency no-tifications such as tornado and hurricane warnings, tempo-rary base closures, terrorist actions, evacuations, recalls, etc.

The AFRC EMS will work within the AFRC/507 ARWexisting network to deliver alerts to networked personnel anddevices, including desktops, laptops, PDAs, cell phones andwork/home phones. AFRC will consolidate all forms of alert-ing through AFRC IWSAlerts, combining a network alertingsystem (NAS), telephony alerting system (TAS) and mobiletext messaging. In the near future, AFRC will also integratehost base Giant Voice public address systems.

All forms of alerting can be triggered through IWSAlertswith a single click of a mouse, thereby accelerating personnelresponse during emergencies. Using IWSAlerts, AFRC/507ARW will distribute alerts quickly through the network, dra-matically improving the command’s ability to get informationin the hands of personnel in a timely manner. Please be ad-vised we will still need up to date hard copy/electronic recallrosters for each unit in case of base-wide power failure, net-work inaccessibility, etc.

In order to achieve IOC status the 507 ARW CommandPost must evaluate the functionality of the following alertingmethods and scenarios in the following order beginning Thurs-day 09/13/07 during normal duty hours:

1. Popup capability - Informational messages on userdesktops much like the Tinker Messaging System must beevaluated to make sure the client software on the 507 ARWnetwork is functioning correctly.

2. Email notification at work – A message requiring enduser response via a .mil address email account

3. Work Phone notification/Work Cell Phone – Auto-mated voice notification via your work phone number

4. Home Phone/email notification/Civilian scenario –Automated voice notification via home phone and email infor-mation extracted from MilPDS Civilians and contractors havethe option to Opt-In or Opt-out of receiving emergency notifi-cations via their home/cell phone and home e-mail.

In order to evaluate these alerting methods we need themost current up to date information, please click your purple

IWSAlerts globe icon and select “Update My Contact De-tails”. Please change all DSN phone numbers to commercialand verify all information obtained from MilPDS is accurate.You can access this feature at any time to verify your infor-mation.

The system will be considered Fully Operational Capable(FOC) when all systems are working at optimum. Future no-tifications on the FOC system will contact personnel in orderof precedence for each method of contact. Once you haveresponded via one of the prescribed alerting methods you willbe considered contacted and checked off in the system. Thissystem will not continuously dial after contact has been con-firmed.

The IWS Alerts database resides on a secure databaseserver behind the AFRC firewall system at the AFRC Net-work Control Center at Robins AFB GA. Access to theIWSAlerts program to run official scenarios will be limited toCommand Post controllers to ensure that only authorized offi-cials have access. The Wing commander can authorize addi-tional personnel as needed, but each person provided accessmust be trained in use of the program and a record will bemaintained of each scenario that is ran.

As previously stated this will be the primary system for allAFRC unit level alerting. I must reiterate the Command Postwill still need up to date hard copy/electronic recall rosters foreach unit on the J: drive in case of a base-wide power failure,network inaccessibility, off base power outages, etc.

The faint glow from my compass did little to expel thedarkness enveloping me. Years ago as a young Lieutenant, Isnaked my platoon through a distant valley floor. It was myfirst “Movement to Contact” exercise and my mind wasawash with horrific images of impending doom. An unex-pected downpour along with a sudden change to the op-erations order only heightened my concerns. That dy-namic environment coupled with an unfamiliar locationignited a flame of anxiety within me. I was able to smothermy anxiety by forcing myself to focus, to focus on thetasks at hand. Now looking back, I realize my time on thevalley floor equipped me to deal with change.

Today everyone in our profession must navigate througha chaotic military environment. The way is not clearlymarked, DoD transformation is upon us. Ever changingscenarios and directions are a daily occurrence. New pro-cesses with alphabet soup names like: eLog21, CAM, SixSigma, DIMHRS, ECSS, RE21, myBiz, or vMPF are com-mon. Organizations we grew up with and became accus-

tom to have suddenly morphed into mysterious beasts. Nolonger docile, organizations with new routing symbols haveinterwoven responsibilities across organizational and func-tional lines. Sometimes organizations no longer providerequired support. Funding, facilities and manpower arelimited due to BRAC and budget issues. The continualonslaught from changing scenarios has overwhelmed andthe resulting anxiety has paralyzed individuals and organi-zations. This is where focus comes in.

Focusing on specific tasks strips away nonessential ef-forts and resulting emotions. With focus daunting pro-cesses or objectives shrink as the “elephant” is eaten onebite at a time. Therefore as we undergo transformation inthe military, focus on what makes you viable as a warfighter. If you are a young Airman or cross trainee, focuson your AFSC and ancillary training. Don’t worry aboutthe latest Air Force initiative or how the next AEF cyclegets filled. As an NCO, focus on developing your subordi-nates while deflecting training detractors which inhibit thedevelopment of your warriors. NCOs can also focus ourAirmen by not joining the chorus of naysayer’s bemoaningthe current state of the Air Force. The old adage is true,“You gripe up the chain of command, not down”. If NCOsand officers will follow this wisdom there will be less anxi-ety within the ranks. For without wood there is no fire.

Officers too must focus. We owe it to our Airmen. Anofficer’s focus should be on organizingand equipping his subordinates to accom-plish their war time tasks. Airmen wantleaders who wade through the confusionwith a firm goal. Chasing the flavor ofthe day or jerking the masses after somenebulous metric only confirms anAirmen’s suspicion, no one is in charge.Without focus there is no goal and thepeople perish.

So how do we respond to the DoDtransformation efforts? First don’t losefocus on developing your war time skills.Next expand your expertise into a trans-formational area and master it. Seek outthose who have mastered an area you aredeficient in. Take a bite out of the “el-ephant” and chew it BEFORE swallow-ing. Repeat the process and involve oth-ers. Before long you will have developeda sharp focus, the ability to navigatechange and the wherewithal to endurefurther transformations. Remember, stayfocused.

The succcess of the Air Force Reserve NCO corps depends on their ability to applyleadership and management skills learned primarily in a civilian setting to a military environ-ment. Not all of today’s mid-level NCOs have extensive first-hand supervisory experi-ence in a reserve environment; therefore, the instruction in this course is intendedto improve the students’ military supervisor capabilities and understanding oftheir positions as related to the USAFR. (Military Only forExcelsior examinations). These examinations test college-level knowledge you mayhave gained through your job, reading, travel, or hobbies. You must test at yourReserve DANTES approved test center. Testing at another DANTES test centerwill be on a case-by-case basis. The third Tuesday of each month at 0800 has beenset aside for testing. DeVaughn looks back on years spent in militaryEditor’s Note: The following questions were asked

of Senior Master Sgt. LaTina DeVaughn as she pre-pared for retirement.

1. When is your retirement date? The effective date wasOct. 31, 2007, but a ceremony was held during the OctoberUTA.

2. When did you enter the military? I joined Sept. 24, 1984,but I actually went into basic training on Feb. 5, 1985.

3. Explain what lead you to join the military? My familyhas a military background. My Father was in the Army forsix years. My oldest brother went into the Navy right aftergraduating high school. I knew I wanted to serve my countrysimply because of both my father and brother doing so. Iweighed my options and decided to wait two years. Duringthat time, I attended a two-year college and earned anassociate’s degree. After graduating, I talked to a recruiter andjoined the Air Force. That was the beginning of my indepen-

dence and my military ca-reer. I haven’t had any re-grets. What goals did youset for yourself? I wantedto earn my Bachelor’s de-gree, live abroad for atleast four years, have a lov-ing family, and be in a job Ienjoyed doing.

6. How many yearshave you been with the

507th? 97. What is your current military job title? Chief, Combat Sup-

port Section and Career Advisor, 35th Combat CommunicationsSquadron.

8. What goals/tasks did you set for your self coming into thisposition? Since I came over as a code A personnel and supplywas really a one-deep position, I really wanted to assist whereneeded, improve and/or develop supply procedures, managepeople so they felt like they had a voice, and let my Commanderknow I was working for him in every aspect of the way.

9. Who is your current supervisor? Lt. Col. Roy Peterson10. Describe the various military jobs you’ve held over the

years. Transportation Superintendent in the Distribution sectionof Combat Logistics Support Section (CLSS), Career Advisorfor CLSS and for the 35th CBCS, Individual Mobilization

Augmentee (IMA) program from July 1995-September 1998 withthe 72nd Air Base Wing (AFMC), NCOIC of the Aircraft PartsStore, NCOIC of the Combat Supply System section, NCOICMission Support, and NCOIC of Equipment Management, 32ndField Training Squadron, FTD 526 (AETC).

11. What lead you into these jobs? Promotions, PCS, mini-mum manning, and being selected.

12. What are you going to miss the most about the 507thARW? The family-oriented atmosphere. I love how the peoplein the Wing reach out to one another. I also enjoy the fact that weknow how to have fun when we have down time in the Wing,i.e., Family Day or Operation Holiday Spirit. The overall gener-osity will be missed as well. Your Unit? The outstanding Airmenand first-term NCOs in the squadron. We really have some hard-working people in the squadron that look out for our troops, whichis a must in today’s Air Force. Our Airmen must have a sense ofbelonging, being taken care of, and of feeling supported. Withthose securities in place from us (supervisors), they can and willdo anything.

13. If you could do one portion of your career over againwhat would it be? I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve enjoyed theexperience and I truly believe my life took the path it has forreason. I just let go and let God.

14. Who is the most memorable military character during yourcareer? Col. Stayce D. Harris. She was the Vice-Commanderof 507th ARW and now serves as the Commander of the 459thARW, Andersen AFB, MD. Why? When she was Vice, I sawher in the Wing all the time. I mean she got out and mingled withthe personnel and that made a difference. Every time I saw heron duty or off, she was smiling. Whenever I stopped her to talkwith her, she made the time and also gave great advice. ColonelHarris is a role model for me as well. She has a long list ofaccomplishments; yet, you’d never know them unless you readher biography. I once picked up a Jet magazine and read abouther in there! On the night I won the Billy Hughes award, she wassitting at my table with my daughter and when the winner wasannounced she gave my daughter a big hug. She told me thatnight she was proud of me and told my daughter to be proud ofme as well. I will never forget that moment. Colonel Harris is themost memorable military character to me because she repre-sents motivation, steadfastness, and success.

15. What advice could you offer to the younger Airmen?Never give up on your goals and dreams. You are somebodyand your opinions matter. Speak up and be heard.

16. What are your retirement plans (golfing, traveling, fish-ing etc.)? Spend more quality time with my 16-year-old daugh-ter and to make use of my time share investment.

16. What are your retirement plans(golfing, traveling, fishing etc.)? Spendmore quality time with my 16-year-olddaughter and to make use of my timeshare investment. I was very fortunate tohave traveled to some very beautiful placesthroughout my military career. I now wantto go and enjoy those same places in aleisurely fashion and let my daughter seesome of the things I’ve seen.

17. Of those tasks completed, whichone has the most impact on your life orthe men and women you serve? I wouldeasily say it was when I augmented for45 days with Security Forces Squadronhere at Tinker. Their personnel weredeploying so frequently that it became arotation so their manpower was mini-mum in every position and in every rank.

They put those of us who volunteeredthrough a fast-paced training course andthen assigned to shift. It was certainlyan eye-opening experience for the merefact that I had no idea what their jobsencompassed on a day-to-day basis.However, I soon learned because theyrotated all augmented into various positionsto give us insight to the various jobs. Wedid terrorist-threat scenarios to ensure allpersonnel knew how to respond properly.It was hard work, but understandably so.I met and worked with some awesomepeople and made some lasting friend-ships. Most of all I gained valuableknowledge about the career field andpersonnel that protect us and this instal-lation. Better yet, I know how they do itand how much pride goes into as well.

18. Have you deployed before? No,I have not.

19. When you joined the military didyou ever think you’d achieve the rankand position you’ve accomplished? Yes,I worked hard to attain my rank and Ifeel blessed to have achieved it.

20. How has your loved ones/familysupported your military career? Wow,they have supported me in every es-sence of the word support. They havemade the phone calls or have sent thegreeting cards that brighten my day whenI needed it the most. Whether it was tak-ing care of my daughter during annualtours, TDYs, or late working hours, myfamily and very close friends have beenmy rock throughout my military career.

Employers get a closer lookat Guard/Reserve missionby Senior Airman Zach Anderson

507th Air Refueling WingIt’s been said that serving as a mem-

ber of the Air Force Reserve or AirNational Guard is a practice of constantlybalancing an array of responsibilities.Reservists and guardsmen are constantlyjuggling the responsibilities of home life,civilian employment and military obliga-tions. While the balancing act is a well-known and accepted fact of life for thosewho serve, it is sometimes difficult forthose outside the military realm to fullyappreciate the commitment required toserve as both a civilian employee andmember of the military. In fact, some-times it’s difficult to even understand whyreservists and guardsmen make the com-mitment to balance those responsibilities.Sometimes, the best way to gain that ap-preciation is to see first-hand exactlywhat serving is really all about.

On Oct. 24, a group of 24 civilianemployers of members of the 507th AirRefueling Wing, 513th Air Control Groupand 137th Air Refueling Wing accom-

panied reservists and guardsmen on aflight to Offut Air Force Base, NE. Theemployers were given a briefing fromcommanders prior to receiving a tour ofU.S. Strategic Command. On the re-turn flight to Tinker, employers had theopportunity to witness two separateaerial refuelings of a B-52 Stratofortressand an E-6 Mercury. The intent of themission was to allow civilian employersa glimpse into the military side of the lifeof a reservist or guardsmen…and it defi-nitely accomplished the mission.

“It was great. I got to see firsthandwhat they are doing when they are noton the job,” said Jim Dooley, a flight chiefwith the 558 CVSS. “It gave me agreater appreciation for the sacrificesthey are making and how awesome theAir Force is, whether it is the Air ForceReserve or Air National Guard.”

“I can see that this is a very impor-tant job for them,” said Larry Hopkinsof Hopkins Electronics. “From what wewere able to see from the planes, youcan see how important each person’s

job is.”“It was very interesting.

It’s so important for the se-curity of our nation. For thereservists and guardsmen toperform this job is needed,and they do a great job. Ihave a greater appreciationfor that,” said Jerry Zamora,chief of supply chain man-agement for the B-2.

“The whole trip wasoutstanding,” said Col. JeffGlass, commander of the 507thARW. “It worked out wellwith all we were able to do inone day. And it went a longway to let employers knowwhat their employees do.”

The mission also served as a way tohelp with the integration of the newly com-bined missions of the 507th reserve wingand the 137th Air National Guard wing.

“We wanted to include our Air Na-tional Guard associate partners in thisto help bond our new relationship,” saidLt. Col. Rich Curry, Public Affairs Of-ficer for the 507th ARW.

While the trip did help employers gar-ner a new appreciation for reservists andguardsmen, they had plenty of fun dur-ing the day as well.

“It was fantastic. Just mind boggling.It was so hands-on! I thought we wouldbe restricted to doing very little, but ev-erything was wide open to us, like walk-ing into the cockpit, just everything!,”said Hopkins.

And through that hands-on experi-ence, employers were able to catch aglimpse of a day in the life of a reservistor guardsman…and perhaps get achance to understand exactly what thatwell-known balancing act is all about.

Food for Fit to Fight battleby Senior Airman Zach Anderson

The battle to stay Fit to Fight is onethat is fought on two fronts. On one sideis basic physical activity, exercise, work-ing out and burning calories. It’s this sideof the battle that typically receives themost attention. It’s reasonable to assumethat by burning off enough calories atthe gym, an individual will be able to meethis or her Fit to Fight goals. Yet accord-ing to experts, the calories being takenin are just as important as those beingburned off. In other words, you have toeat healthy in order to be healthy.

“It might be lofty to say that youroverall life will improve, but it is prettyclose. You will have more energy andfocus. You will feel better overall, andyour risk of chronic diseaseis greatly decreased,” saidTiffany Schlinke, DieteticInternship Director at theUniversity of Central Okla-homa.

Schlinke is a registereddietitian and holds abachelor’s degree of Clini-cal Dietetics and a master’sdegree in Nutritional Sci-ences. She said reaping therewards of a healthy diet isreally as simple as makingthe right choices.

“Basically, the closer tothe farm the better. Wholegrains like whole wheatbread are better than thewhite refined breads. Wholefruit provides fiber that thejuice can’t give you. Chooselean meats like those with‘round’ or ‘loin’ in the name. The lowerthe fat in the dairy products you get thebetter. Choose only low-fat cookingmethods like grilled, broiled and baked.Cooking in fat, like frying, only adds fat

and calories to an otherwise goodchoice,” said Schlinke.

Schlinke said there are also someitems to avoid when filling up your plate.

“Saturated and trans fats should beavoided as much as possible as they havebeen linked to many adverse health con-ditions. Also, simple sugars like sweetsand pop have no nutritional value and justgive you empty calories,” said Schlinke.

When it comes to weight loss,Schlinke said it’s best to steer clear of“fad diets” and instead opt for a healthiermethod of obtaining a desired weight.

“One should ideally maintain or loseweight by eating a variety of foods toget all the nutrients and simply cut backon serving sizes. Cutting out 500 calo-ries per day leads to a one-pound weightloss per week. This can be as easy as

leaving a few bites on your plate andwalking around more,” said Schlinke.

Schlinke also had some advice onhow to maintain a healthy diet even wheneating at a restaurant.

“Request dressings on the side so youcan control the amount used, ask forthings to be prepared without added fat,have the waiter remove the bread bas-ket if this is a danger zone for you, askfor a take-out container when your mealis delivered and put half of your food init right away for an almost mindless wayto decrease portion size,” said Schlinke.

Schlinke said that many times, justmaking small changes to eating habitscan have a large impact on overallhealth.

“Any time you can substitute ahealthy choice for an unhealthy oneyou are doing good,” said Schlinke. “Iknow of many, many cases wherepeople did something as easy as drink-ing a diet pop in place of their regularpop and lost a significant amount of

weight.”Schlinke said that the basic

concept to remember whenmaking healthy choices is thesimple concept of balance andmoderation.

“People should eat a varietyof different foods from all foodgroups and not overdo it on anyone thing,” said Schlinke.

Schlinke said it’s important toremember that making changes toeating habits isn’t easy and thatthe results of those habits won’tcome overnight.

“Keep up the good work.Don’t let a ‘bad day’ make youthrow in the towel. It takes timeto create healthy eating habits andeach time you make a good choiceyou are one step closer,” saidSchlinke.

By making healthy choicesabout diet, Air Force members can besure that the time spent at the dinner tableis paying off just as much as the timespent at the gym.

American sacrifice has many facesand many stories. It knows no age limitand it is not limited to certain ranks or gen-der. American sacrifice is not seasonal noris it only in times of war. It is not only forthe old or the young.

It is however what keeps this countryfree. It is felt by communities. Family andfriends mourn it. Generations are inspiredby it and this country is free because of it.

One such face of sacrifice is 507th CivilEngineering Squadron member Tech.Sgt Daniel Dale Bostwick. SergeantBostwick received the Purple Heartmedal for injuries sustained in a terror-ist attack on the Khobar Towers hous-ing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabiaon June 25, 1996.

Then Airman First Class, Bostwickwas a member of the 4404 Security Forces

Bostwick recalls the terrorist attack on Khobar TowersSquadron. On that day a truck bomb ex-ploded 80 feet from the towers killing 19airmen and wounding 500 others, one ofthem being Airman Bostwick.

According to Bostwick it was a nor-mal day. “I was at the services morale build-ing,” said Bostwick. “I was heading to thetop of the finance building to provide pe-rimeter security.”

Injured Airman Bostwick was trans-ported to the hospital. His injuries cameless than two weeks after his 21st birth-day and less than two years of enlisting inthe military.

The sacrifices made by Bostwick andhis fellow Airmen helped reshaped Depart-ment of Defense policies. Then DefenseSecretary William Perry said, “We nowknow that we face an unprecedentedthreat,” speaking of the terrorism attack.DOD relocated its forces overseas, re-structured its command structure and re-focused its focus on force protection.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor opened in Novem-ber 2006 on the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site inNew York.

This sacred ground was first used by Gen. GeorgeWashington’s Army toward the end of the Revolutionary Warand is where Washington and his officers first awarded the Badgeof Military Merit, a small purple cloth that became the model forthe Purple Heart.

In 1782, at his headquarters in Newburgh, New York, GeorgeWashington created the Badge of Military Merit to be given toenlisted men and noncommissioned officers for meritorious ac-tion. It became known as the Purple Heart because of the figureof a heart in purple cloth or silk edged with narrow lace or bind-ing and was affixed to the uniform coat over the left breast. In1932, the Badge of Military Merit was redesignated by GeneralDouglas MacArthur the Purple Heart to be awarded to personskilled or wounded in action against an enemy of the United States.

Today this site is home to over 12,000 stories honoring ex-traordinary sacrifices made for this nation. Weekly hundreds ofstories from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistanand other conflicts pour in bridging generational sacrifice.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is the first in thenation to recognize Americans wounded or killed in action whileserving in the United States military, and is the nation’s sole mu-seum dedicated to the preservation of these stories of sacrifice.

The 7,500-square-foot facility hall includes an interactive com-puter bank of Purple Heart recipients, theaters where veterans’stories can be shared, as well as images and personal artifactsthat will bring veterans stories alive.

The Hall of Honor serves all Americans and inspires peoplearound the world to learn more about these men and women andto give thanks to those who gave so much to keep the dream offreedom, liberty, and equality alive for all.

The Hall of Honor is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdaysthrough Saturdays and Mondays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundaysyear round.

National Guard and Reserve members and their fami-lies are eligible and encouraged to nominate employers whohave gone above and beyond in their support of military em-ployees. The Secretary ofDefense Employer Support Freedom Award is the U.S.government’s highest recognition given to outstanding em-ployers.

many of whom provide significant support to their employeeswho serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Past recipientsof the Freedom Award have provided full salary, continuation ofbenefits, care packages and even home and lawn care to fami-lies of employees fulfilling their military obligation.

The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the aus-pices of the National Committee for Employer Support of theGuard and Reserve (ESGR) to recognize exceptional supportfrom the employer community.

ESGR is a Department of Defense agency established in1972. Its mission is to gain and maintain employer support forGuard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding sup-port, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflictsthrough informal mediation.
