THE ANTHOLOGY OF ITALIAN OPERAin five volumesedited by Paolo ToscanoRicordi

This is the ultimate collection of opera arias in Italian, released byRicordi, the original publisher of Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi andPuccini. This anthology is a happy complement to the G. Schirmer OperaAnthology, with few arias duplicated. Arias include the most famousexcerpts along with rare beauties. Each aria has been carefully researchedand newly engraved. An introductory section in each volume presentsdigested information about each aria, presenting composer and librettistinformation, libretto sources, premiere performances, dramatic plot con-text of the arias, and translations for study. The entire history of Italianopera is represented, beginning with music by Monteverdi and Cavalli.Later Baroque composers include Handel, Vivaldi and Pergolesi. Newrealizations have been created for the Baroque arias. Beyond Mozart, clas-sical era Italian arias by Gluck, Cimarosa and Paisiello may be found inthe compilations. Dozens of nineteenth century bel canto arias appear inthe series, by Cherubini, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. Verdi and Pucciniare quite liberally present. Other 19th and 20th century composers repre-sented are Boito, Catalani, Cilea, Giordano, Leoncavallo, Mascagni,Montemezzi, Ponchielli, Respighi and Wolf-Ferrari. Many of the ariashave never before been published in collections. On the cover is the sen-sual 1859 painting Il bacio by Francesco Hayez, an artist associated withset design and Teatro La Scala. Long-lasting sewn binding.
