The city of Burbank is located in the southeast San Fernando Valley, approximately six miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. It is an established middle-income and upper-income community that incorporated July 8, 1911. The city is joined with the cities of Glendale and Pasadena into the Tri-Cities office sub market although “technically” or geographically is within the San Fernando Valley and is best analyzed as a subsection of the Valley.

The city covers roughly 17 square miles and is bordered by the Verdugo Mountains on the north, the City of Glendale on the east, Griffith Park on the south and the communities of Sunland and North Hollywood on the west. The city is divided into several different sections. The main dividing line is the Golden State (I-5) Freeway which travels north south through the city and creates an east and west half. The east half includes the downtown area and municipal buildings, as well as the prime residential districts thatextend into the Verdugo Mountains. The west half consists middle- and upper-middle-income residential areas, industrial districts around the Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport, and the Media District that includes major movie studios and entertainment companies, such as the Walt Disney Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, and NBC/Universal, as well as Nickelodeon Animation Studios, DIC Animation, and Cartoon Network.

A Metroline Red-line subway station is located in adjacent North Hollywood, and Burbank itself has two stations for the Metrolink commuter rail service which links Ventura County/Palmdale/Lancaster and points in between with Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides public bus service.

As of October 2017, the city had an unemployment rate of 3.5%, better than the County rate of 4.7%. Median household income is about $72,000, compared with $63,000 for the County..

Burbank has one hospital, Providence St. Joseph. This is a 414-bed acute care facility and hub of a medical office district in the south-central area of the city.
