Leaders look forward to the future. They hold in their minds ideas and visions of what can be. They have a sense of what is uniquely possible if everyone works together for a common purpose. Leaders are positive about the future, and they believe that people can make a difference. Leaders must get others to see the exciting future possibilities. They breathe life into a vision and communicate hopes and dreams so that others clearly understand and share them as their own. They show others how their values and interests will be served by the long-term vision of the future. ! C A DE D E Take Action Envision the Future: The most important role of vision in organizational life is to give focus to human energy. To enable everyone concerned with your enterprise to see more clearly what’s ahead of him or her, you must have and convey an exciting, ennobling vision of the future. Only shared visions have the magnetic power to sustain commitment over time. Enlist Others: Through skillful use of metaphors, symbols, word pictures, positive language, and personal energy, leaders generate enthusiasm and excitement for the common vision. Authenticity is the true test of conviction, and constituents will follow willingly only if they sense that the vision is genuine. LEARNING INSPIRE FUTURE ENABLE
