Pancreas Worksheet

As you view the tissue slides, draw your observations in the space provided. Include any written notes that may be helpful when you are studying and answering the questions for your assignment

.

Pancreas 1X

A cross section of the tissue in the pancreas.

Pancreas 4X

The Islets of Langerhan contain endocrine cells that secrete the hormones insulin and glucagon.

The exocrine aciner cells secrete digestive enzymes and bicarbonate into the intestines.

Pancreas 10X

There are separate cells found in the pancreas. The endocrine cells secrete hormones into blood or lymph. The exocrine cells secrete to the surface of a tissue.

Pancreas 20X

The insulin secreted by the cells of the pancreas promotes protein synthesis.

Pancreas 40X

The enzymes secreted by the cells of the pancreas aid in the digestion and absorption that takes place in the small intestines.

Intestine 4X

The epithelium found in the intestines is made up of varying kinds of cells. The cells that make up the villi are the most abundant. These cells function to absorb nutrients during the digestive process.

Intestine 10X

The intestines also contain fibroblasts. These cells are part of the connective tissue that provides support to the intestinal canal.

Intestine 20X

Like all organs, the tissues of the intestines receive oxygen and remove waste by blood carried in arteries and veins.

Intestine 40X

The intestines are lined with smooth muscle that contracts involuntarily to move the digested food through the intestinal canal.

1. Describe the common tissues found in the organs of the intestinal tract. (5 points)

2. Describe the common tissues and structures found in accessory organs. (5 points)

3. Describe these structures and their function in the pancreas (5 points):

Acinar cells that secrete enzymes or bicarbonate _____

Islet cells that secrete insulin or glucagon ____

Blood vessel ______

4. Describe these structures and their function in the small intestines (5 points):

Villi _____

Smooth muscle ______

Intestinal glands _______
