1.0 Foreword

This standard has been prepared under the authority of the JCB Standards and Legislation department (Standards department).

This standard is intended solely for use in connection with the business requirements of J C Bamford Excavators Ltd. (JCB) and is for use by appropriately qualified and competent people.

This is the 6th issue of this standard to correct the cross reference in clause 13.3.

Contractual and legal considerations are not part of the scope of this standard. This standard does not relinquish any responsibility, regulatory requirements, or duty of care.

2.0 Scope

This standard specifies JCB's requirements for weldable steels for general structural and engineering purposes. For use on company products, in the form of hot rolled plates, strip, wide flats and bars and are applicable to the references below. All sizes stated are in "mm" unless otherwise stated. This standard is referenced in the following JCB standards:

5000/0400 Structural steel sections to BS EN 10025, BS EN 10210 and BS EN 10056

5000/0401 Steel rectangular box section to BS EN 10219 grade S355JOH

STD00011 Comparative data for JCB materials

3.0 Concessions

In the case of a failure to conform to the requirements of this standard, a documented concession should be generated. This concession shall clearly state: - title and name of person requesting the concession. - the reason why the concession is being requested. - summary of action in place to ensure that concession will be corrected within a specified time. - title and name of director who is authorising concession within the Business Unit. A digital copy of the concession shall be filed with JCB Standards department (concession by e-mail shall be accepted).

4.0 References

This standard incorporates provisions from other standards. These references are cited at the appropriate places within the text and are listed hereafter. For undated references, the latest edition applies. - BS EN 10025 Hot rolled products of non-alloy structural steels: technical delivery conditions - BS EN 10029 Hot rolled steel plates 3 mm thick or above - tolerances on dimensions, shape and mass

5.0 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

Flats - width criteria of > 20mm to150mm. Wide flats - width criteria of > 150mm to 1250mm. Plate - width criteria of 600mm and above.

6.0 Plate condition

6.1 Supply

Plates are to be supplied in the "as rolled" or normalised condition to suit supplier, unless otherwise stated.

6.2 Chemical

The chemical composition of steel shall be determined by the ladle analysis as given in the appropriate JCB engineering Standard.

6.3 Surface

The surface condition of plates, strip and wide flats where the material is under 20mm thickness shall be to strip mill quality, de-coiled, cold flattened and sheared to size, free from rust and other surface defects.

Material 20mm thickness and over shall be reversing mill quality. Plates to these sizes shall be sheared to size, the surface condition shall comply with BS EN 10163, (as stated in BS EN 10025) except with the additional requirement that for JCB standard 5000/0103 (grade S355), repair by welding shall not be undertaken by the supplier without the permission of JCB Research, refer to section 13.0 for details.

Different surface conditions are some times referred to on individual drawings, this overrides the requirements within this standard.

Maximum 1% of the distance between points of contact on the plate between 300mm to 1000mm, but not exceeding the values given in the table above.

7.6 General plate sizes at JCB

Plates used at JCB range from 2000mm to 4000mm long by 1000mm to 2000mm wide. Although larger sizes are available and may be used where necessary they cannot be handled economically at JCB. Length and width increments are normally in steps of 250mm. It is not practical to list the sizes of plate used since these are frequently changed to suit varying work load and improved production techniques. Guidance on plate availability should be sought from the manufacturing or purchasing departments.

11.0 Bend test

For plate, strip and wide flats up to and including 25mm thick. Material to meet the requirements of a bend test of 1- ½ times the material thickness, bend radius through 180° for length, or cross wise specimen

12.0 Other requirements

For chemical composition, test requirements, mechanical properties and all other general information refer to BS EN 10025.

13.0 Surface discontinuities (extracts from BS EN 10163 applicable to JCB)

For further information refer to the appropriate part and section of the British Standard.

13.1 Definitions

Imperfections - surface discontinuities other than cracks, shell and seams with a depth and / or area equal to or less than a specified limiting value. Imperfections may be left without repair.

Defects - surface discontinuities including all cracks, shell and seams with a depth and / or area greater than a specified value. Defects shall be repaired.

13.2 General requirements

To differentiate the surface discontinuities in terms of imperfections and defects, the depth of representative surface discontinuities shall when necessary be measured. The measurement shall be carried out from the surface of the product. The depth of the discontinuities chosen as representative ones shall be determined after the discontinuity has been removed by grinding.

Areas affected by surface discontinuities shall when necessary be determined as follows: a) For isolated (spotlike) discontinuities, the affected area is obtained by drawing a continuous line which follows the circumference of the discontinuity at a distance of 50mm or by drawing a rectangle whose sides are 50mm from the edge of the discontinuity. b) For discontinuities appearing in a cluster, the affected area is obtained by drawing a continuous line which follows the circumference of the cluster at a distance of 50mm or by drawing a rectangle

whose sides are 50mm from the continuous line which follows the cluster or the product edge if this is closer. c) For discontinuities appearing in a line the affected area is obtained by drawing a rectangle the sides of which are 50mm in the longitudinal direction and 20mm in the transverse direction from the edge of the discontinuity or by the product edge if this is closer.

Example of single discontinuity area with its border.

13.3 Classification of surface discontinuities

Applicable to hot rolled plates, flats and wide flats.

The surface requirements and repair conditions are subdivided into 2 classes and each class is further subdivided into 3 subclasses.

CLASS "A" The surface condition shall comply with the requirements of 13.4.1 and 13.4.2

The remaining thickness of the affected area under discontinuities and repaired ground areas shall not be less than the minimum thickness as specified in the appropriate standards.

CLASS "B" The surface condition shall comply with the requirements below.

The remaining thickness of the affected area under discontinuities and repaired ground areas may be less than the minimum thickness as specified in the appropriate tolerance standard.

Subclass 1 Repair by chipping and / or grinding followed by welding is permitted in compliance with the following : a single welded area shall not exceed 0.125m² and the sum of the welded areas shall not exceed 0.125m² or 2% of the surface area under inspection whichever is the greater. The exception to this repair work is plate to JCB standard 5000/0103, refer to the section 6.3.

Subclass 2 Repair by welding is not allowed - not acceptable at JCB.

Subclass 3 Repair by welding is not allowed - not acceptable at JCB.
