YEAR 2012 INSAF YEAR-TO-DATE PROJECT EFFORT LAGS A BIT — TIME TO

CATCH-UP

We are pausing to take stock of our total project effort so far this year. As of early

October, the INSAF total project effort stood at $43,955, about 15% lower than last

year at this time.

The chart below shows a comparison of the project effort for Year-to-date 2012 with

those during 2010 and 2011. The totals for the last two years are also shown.

We are very much in the game though. Please check to see if you have already

acted to do something this year for a project of your interest. Also, have you been

meaning to start a new project? This is an excellent time to do so. You can do two

good things at once. Give something back to help someone and get a tax deduction

for yourself for the Year 2012.

Pages 7 and 8 of the Newsletter have project ideas for you to consider. Other pages

show you how some of our INSAF colleagues are finding worthy causes to support.

Remember — to help you give back for any causes of your interest is why INSAF exists

and how we together can make a difference. Please let the Newsletter Editor know if

you could use any assistance.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have introduced

INSAF to other people. Our growth in membership numbers in recent years, largely

due to the excellent efforts of people like Dr. Prem N. Bajaj, has slowed in 2012. INSAF

is fortunate to have an estimated 161 Life Members, and it would be great if each one

would introduce INSAF to one other person in the coming 2-3 months.

INSAF WELCOMES WICHITA STATE UNIV. ISA

INSAF welcomes Indian Students' Association (ISA), at Wichita

State University (WSU), to Life Membership of INSAF. ISA,

founded in Nov. 1985, is an active organization at the

campus of WSU, in Wichita, Kansas. Every year, ISA has

helped new students from India in any way possible.

Around 2001– 2002, ISA raised enough funds for an

endowed scholarship for a student from India. ISA has the

unique distinction of being the only student organization

to establish an endowed scholarship.

INSAF invites other organizations, as well, with an interest

in giving back to India which gave a start to so many of us.

It is a rare opportunity for partnership of various Indian

organizations with INSAF. Specifically, all members of ISA are

now eligible to support any cause consistent with INSAF’s

goals by making a contribution to an existing project or are

welcome to start their own new project. In fact, INSAF policy

provides for partial matching funds if a member wishes to

start a new project. All contributions to INSAF are tax

deductible in the United States.

For an organization, membership dues are the joint Life

Membership dues (currently $ 150). Once an organization

becomes a member of INSAF, the president/advisor/

executive officer (herein called EO) of the organization when

it becomes a Life Member of INSAF, will nominate two

persons to represent it by writing to the INSAF Financial

Secretary.. The two nominees are eligible to vote in any

INSAF election and will serve as a link with the membership of

their organization.

The EO may designate the nominees for a fixed period as

deemed appropriate by the EO. The EO may replace a

nominee by another person, as the organization rules

dictate (for example, when the nominee ceases to be a

member of the organization).

We look forward to welcoming the ISA nominees in the next

issue of the Newsletter after the INSAF Financial Secretary

receives the nominations from ISA’s WSU advisor.

VOLUNTEERS INVITED TO SERVE ON INSAF EXEC

The INSAF Constitution provides for a 4 member INSAF Exec

Team to take charge for a 2 year term The next term begins

Feb 1, 2013 and ends Jan 31, 2015.

Two of our current Exec members, Dr. Prem Bajaj

(President), and Dr. Suresh (Raju) Keshavanarayana

(General Secretary), have decided to take a break when

their term ends Jan 31. We are fortunate that the other two

Execs, Dr. P. Harshavardhana (Vice President), and Ms.

Padmashri Lad (Financial Secretary) have agreed to

continue to serve and will provide continuity. This opens up

two opportunities for anyone interested in serving on the

INSAF Leadership Team.

We are sure we can count on Prem Ji and Raju Ji to remain

just as committed to INSAF as they have been.

Are you interested in serving on the INSAF Exec Team? Any

member can nominate himself/herself or another member.

If nominating another person, you must first obtain their

consent to be nominated.

Former Exec Team members are also cordially invited to

express an interest. INSAF is fortunate that so many of the

former Exec members remain just as committed to INSAF as

they were while they were on the Exec team.

Please let the Newsletter Editor know if you are interested

before December 22. If you have any questions, please feel

free to write. E-mail address: [email protected].

PROJECT UPDATE: KALIYUVA MANE

Kaliyua Mane is a residential home managed by the

Divya Deepa Foundation in Kenchalagudu (near

Mysore). The school guides rural children from

disadvantaged backgrounds using an alternate,

innovative, and individually tailored approach.

An INSAF team led by former INSAF Exec Soma Murthy

and current Exec Harsha, has been raising funds to

support the work of the Foundation. Contributors in

addition to Harsha ($2,500) & Soma ($1,000) include the

Sita Foundation of the Ullal Family ($5,000), Sh. Raghu

Rajagopalan ($1,000), Sh. Ajit Deora ($501), INSAF

($500), Padmashri & Raj Lad $500), and Kaye & Bhav

Sharma ($500). In addition, several of Harsha’s friends in

India contributed Rs. 85,000 (about $1,550).

Under this project, a small dormitory for girl students is

already under construction (we’ll share a photo in a

future Newsletter) and the computer lab at Kaliyuva

Mane is being upgraded. In addition, five students

have received or will receive financial support.

Among the five students is Sachin, who completed a 2

yr ITI course in 2012 and is now working at an IT

company in Bangalore. Another student, Mahesha, has

passed his Pre-University examination in 2012 with a first

division. We will report on the next steps taken by

Mahesha. Three new students Manu, Shweta, and

Dhanu will soon be getting support and we’ll report on

their efforts in a near future Newsletter.

The Vidya Mandir provides free, good quality education

to disadvantages students on the outskirts of Hoshiarpur,

Punjab. The school is entirely supported by a trust

managed by the family of Surinder & Nirmal Maheshwary

in honor of the late Shmt Dwarki Devi, a gentle and kind

lady and Surinder’s mother.

Earlier this year, Surinder & Nirmal, Rishi & Meredith

Maheshwary, Suneer & Laura Maheshwary, Tanvir &

Mona Zaidi, jointly contributed $1,750 to help support the

operation of the Vidya Mandir.

Dr. Mahendra and Shmt. Jyoti Nanavati Family Support

Several Worthy Causes

Dr. Mahendra Nanavati was born and raised in

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He received his Board

Certification in Internal Medicine in India. While growing

up as the oldest of 8 siblings, Mahendra shared family

responsibilities with his Dad and, as a result, imbibed good

family values. Mahendra and his wife Jyoti Ji are parents

of three successful, adult children.

On 31 Dec 1967, Mahendra arrived from India at the JFK

Airport amid a major snowstorm, and like many others,

had only $8 in his pocket. Soon after arriving in Rochester,

NY, Mahendra trained as a Psychiatrist and within a few

years received his Board Certifications in Psychiatry and

Geriatric Psychiatry. Mahendra has always been a

vegetarian and a teetotaler, and therefore, went through

some difficult times initially. However, he was impressed to

observe how he received help from so many people he

had never known. With those experiences, Mahendra

and his wife Jyoti have continued to give back to several

worthy causes in India and the US, following the motto of

“Share, Care, Help” whenever possible.

Now retired, Mahendra and Jyoti, recently visited their son

Sujal, an intervention radiologist in the San Francisco Bay

area. During the visit, they shared the background on four

projects being implemented through INSAF, along with

Mahendra’s brother Pankaj and his wife Rupa. These

projects serve as examples of how each of us can find our

own productive and fulfilling ways of giving back.

Manav Kalyan Trust

The Nanavatis were introduced to Manav Kalyan Trust,

Navsari, Gujarat, through a friend. The Trust is dedicated

since 1970 to the support and education of the disabled.

Over 600 children with special needs in vision, hearing,

and learning are being helped at six institutions run by the

Trust. The Nanavati family sent a total of $5,725 last year

through INSAF to support this work.

Jain Swetamber Murtipujak Vishashrimali Mitra Mandal

The Mandal provides financial, educational, and medical

help to the needy among the Jain community. Mahendra

has been actively associated with the leadership in

building a trust fund and with its projects. One program

provides health insurance for basic health care to over 30

needy families . Another effort helped an elderly lady with

obtaining a more suitable home. The family sent a total of

$4,800 last year to support this work.

Adivasi Unnati Mandal

Over the past 40 plus years, on Sundays, a group of

business owners and doctors from Mumbai go to a village

area near Nashik, about 120 Km away, to provide primary

healthcare and other assistance to the Adivasi people in

the area. Jyoti’s brother, owner of a pharmaceutical

company, is one of the volunteers. Several hundred

Adivasi people benefit from these efforts every week.

Some patients receive further advanced care in Mumbai.

The Nanavati family sent $1,225 last year to help these

efforts.

Shrimad Rajchandra Adhyatmik Sadhana Kendra

The Sadhana Kendra is an institution based on the

teaching of Shrimad Rajchandra, a 20th century Jain saint.

It is located in Koba, near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The

Nanavati family sent $1,225 in Yr 2011 to support one of

their interesting projects, under which Chass (buttermilk) is

provided as a service to the local people.

Polio Foundation

This Ahmedabad based foundation is actively working for

to help children with cerebral palsy, diabetes and renal

impairment among other services. All services are

provided either free of cost or at a concessional rate. The

Nanavatis sent $10,000 in Yr 2012 to support the work of

the Polio Foundation.

These projects, and others in the Newsletter, illustrate how

families have found a way of giving back to several

worthy causes, and serve as example for other INSAF

members.

EYE CARE AT O.P. SONI CHARITABLE HOSPITAL

Former Exec Dr. Ashok and Usha Sachdev have been

supporting eye care and other help for the needy at the

O.P. Soni Hospital in Jagraon, Punjab. A contribution of

$1,180 has been sent this year (Sachdevs $1,000, INSAF

$180). The hospital is managed by the family of fellow

INSAF Life Members Ashok & Sanju Soni.

Dr. Bajaj Presides at Banquet & Awards Ceremony

for Kansas Authors Club

On October 6, 2012, INSAF President Dr. Prem Bajaj

presided over the annual Banquet and Awards ceremony

in Salinas, KS. The Club had also organized a surprise

birthday celebration for Prem ji on the occasion of his 80th

birthday.

The Kansas Authors Club was founded in 1904 as a non-

profit 501(c)3 organization and offers the opportunity for

writers to share experiences and problems unique to their

profession. Since 2008, Prem Ji has successively held the

offices of Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and State

President. He has been elected to be President for 2013.

Letter from the INSAF President

Dear Friends,

INSAF was founded in 1971 but it has been a well-kept secret.

During the last years, any time I approached a person to

support INSAF, the person denied having ever heard of it.

INSAF has some unusual features. The annual operating

expenses, at 0.5% averaged over the last 5 years, are lower

than that of any other organization that I have ever seen.

Each project is monitored usually by a member of INSAF.

Members work as volunteers ,and, therein lies the need and

importance for more members.

Asking a person to become a Life Member of INSAF takes a

lot of hesitation and courage – being turned down for the

request is a disappointment.

On 5/18/09, INSAF had 93 Life members – a couple counting

as two members – with the largest number 23 from each of

California and New Jersey. Kansas had only six members.

Most of the states had either one or two members each. I

wished that Kansas fared better in membership count.

BEFORE approaching anyone else, I had my children

become joint Life Members. Then, with hesitation and fear, I

contacted friends for membership in INSAF. At this time, INSAF

has 159 Life Members. Of all the states, Kansas has the

largest number 37.

I request you to introduce INSAF to your friends. You

feel better if your spouse and the grown children are,

also, Life Members. Just dare to ask but be prepared

for a negative response. Please think of those who

dared to get INSAF started.

Please let the public know about INSAF. Find

opportunities for the media to have articles about

INSAF. Inform the new students from India about

INSAF. Get the word out to the public, particularly the

Indian community, as much as possible.

My term as President expires soon. Every member of

the executive committee has done his/her best. I owe

each of them a sense of gratitude. They are

wonderful people to deal with.

I invite you to put your state in # 1 position in the

number of members. Since Kansas’ population is less

than most of other states, your work should be easier

than has been mine. I will be interested in knowing

how you fare.

With best wishes,

Prem Bajaj,

KUNDRA FAMILY CONTINUES TO WORTHY PROJECTS

Over the years, the Joginder & Meera Kundra family has

supported a large variety of projects. In 2012, they have

been supporting the following projects:

JEEVAN PRABHAT, PONDICHERRY

Jeevan Prabhat is a children’s home which houses and

educates about 42 disadvantaged children. We are

pleased to report that in the latest academic year, 15

children got top ten ranks in their respective classes. For

your information, $215 will support the education of a

child for a year ($500 will cover the education and other

expenses/yr). The Kundras sent $3,000 in Yr 2012 to

support the operations there.

CHILD EDUCATION SUPPORT, KERALA

Under this project, a bright young man currently in his

11th grade, Sinto Raphael, is getting support for his

education. This year, $500 have been sent for support.

EKAL VIDYALAY

Ekal Vidyalay is dedicated to the holistic education of

rural children. It currently operates in just under 40,000

villages and educates over 11 million children. The

Kundras have sent $2,500 to support the work.

PROJECT UPDATE: DISHA

DISHA (DISHACARE.ORG) is based in Bareilly, UP with the

mission is to provide opportunities to physically

challenged children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Over the past several years, Rakesh & Geeta Kapur have

been supporting this cause. A contribution of $200 has

been sent this year to support Disha’s work.

PRATHAM MYSORE

INSAF Newsletter readers know that Pratham Mysore

promotes the cause of educating underprivileged

children in the Mysore area of Karnataka. Efforts to

support the work through INSAF are coordinated by Arun

& Padma Cariappa and a number of other colleagues.

In 2012 so far, a total of $16,950 has been sent to

Pratham Mysore — thanks to contributions from Arun &

Padma Cariappa/Schwab Foundation $2,600, Mark &

Rupa Fritz $150, Shalini Jain $100, Achamma Job

Kakkasseril $2,500, Vikram & Arundhati Malladi $10,000,

Kris & Raji Ramprasad $200, Randi Rossignol $400,

Rajagopalan Tatta $400, John & Kathi Thonet $400, and

Vasudeva & Pramodini Shenoi $200.

More information on Pratham Mysore is available at

Prathammysore.org.

BHULPUR SHIKSHA SAMITI, U.P.

Professor Emeritus of Physics Dr. Ram Chaudhari (SUNY

Oswego NY) decided a long time ago that he would

give back to his birthplace, Bhulpur in Etawah District of

U.P. by sponsoring the local school and by promoting

the learning of science there. Although he is retired

now, Ram and his family, along with support from the

Seth Foundation of Ravi & Neera Seth and the Rotary

Foundation, continue to dedicate time and resources

to the following 3 activities in Bhulpur:

Kisan Inter College (started as a Primary/Middle

School and now goes from Primary to 12th grade)

Community Outreach

Medical Dispensary

Every year, Ram and his family and friends send funds to

support this work. Other contributors and foundations

have helped the institution along the way. Two years

ago, Ram donated his ancestral property to a

foundation he started there to provide funding for the

longer term. Last year, a contribution of $2,500 was sent.

The student population currently is about 612 with about

40% being female students. Now, Ram’s eldest son, Shri

Satyendra Chaudhari, is taking over the lead

responsibility and other family members such as son-in-

law Shri Govind and daughter Ms. Asha Chaturvedi are

more and more involved.

Most recently, the medical dispensary conducted a

medical camp which was attended by ~250 persons.

Another project has been to install ceiling fans in each

of the class rooms and the library.

TWO SISTERS APPROACH EDUCATION MILESTONE

We are delighted to report that sisters Amalapushpam

and Venilapushpam have completed the 3rd year of

their 3½ year diploma in Nursing & Midwifery. They are

now embarking on the 6-month practical training. A

contribution of $1,000 (with $250 each coming from

Ashok & Darshan Mehan, Santosh Chokhani, Raj &

Padmashri Lad, and Bhav & Kaye Sharma) has been sent

in Yr 2012 for their support.

SHANKARA EYE FOUNDATION

The Foundation is the US arm of the Shankara Eye Society

which is working on the prevention of blindness in India.

They operate several hospitals and are working to build

more of them. In Yr 2012, contributions of $2,500 (Santosh

Chokhani $1,000, Raj & Padmashri Lad $500 and Bhav &

Kaye Sharma $1,000 ) was sent to help build a hospital in

Ludhiana, Punjab.
