Double Jubilee2019 is going to be huge

50 years

25 years

Stonewall – it all began in the USABack in the 1960s, gay bars and nightclubs were often sub-jected to police raids. The police set out to ascertain and disclose the identity of the people there, which culminated in arrests and charges on grounds of “lewd conduct”. Stone-wall was a series of violent confrontations pitting gay and transgender people against police officers in New York City. In the night from 27 June to Saturday 28 June 1969, the guests at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York City resisted the police raids for the first time. The ri-ots, which lasted six days, are heralded as the birth of the modern LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex) rights movement. They also served as a catalyst for many other gay pride movements which have celebrated this watershed moment in the fight against discrimination each summer ever since.

Zurich Pride – for LGBTI rights in SwitzerlandThe first official “National Gay Demo” was held in Bern in 1979. Following Basel (1980) and Lausanne, the demonstra-tion was held in Zurich from 1982 to 1986. The Zurich Pride Festival, known as CSD (Christopher Street Day) Zurich until 2009, has been organised by volunteers every year since 1994 and is Switzerland’s largest LGBTI event.

The Zurich Pride Festival Association (ZHPF) promotes the acceptance and equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. It campaigns for a Switzerland which is free from sexual or gender discrimination – both in front of the law and within society.

To see this vision become reality, the association organises the largest annual Pride Festival in Switzerland, which comprises a diverse range of activities. The highlight is the iconic parade march through the city centre of Zurich to raise awareness of the political and social issues faced by the LGBTI community.

The association depends on its members and their annual membership contributions. Thanks to their support, the association is able to host the Pride Festival with its mul-titude of events and spread its important political messages. Members of the associa-tion are actively involved through the General Assembly and play a part in determining the direction of the largest LGBTI event in Switzerland. Through its broad membership, the Zurich Pride Festival Association aims to bring together the whole community and meet the needs of the various ways of life, sexual orientations and gender identities.

Thousands of LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) people and their families and friends have come together in Zurich ev-ery year since 1994 to demonstrate for equality and against discrimina-tion. What began as Christopher Street Day (CSD) Zurich over 20 years ago has been known as Zurich Pride Festival since 2009. In 2019, the association is celebrating its 25-year anniversary as well as 50 years since the birth of the LGBTI movement.

Zurich Pride FestivalWith around 42,000 visitors over two days, the festival is among the largest LGBTI events in Switzerland. The event’s political programme features inspiring addresses, motivating words, and speeches with de-mands from members of the political and economic sphere, held from Helvetiaplatz to the festival site.

ParadeThe peaceful march through Zurich city centre together with thousands of supporters and allies is the climax of the festival weekend. In 2018, the police counted around 24,000 participants and people lining the route.

A selection of the acts that have created an electric atmosphere at Zurich Pride Festival in previous years:

Pride WeekPride Week is the cultural and political warm-up for the Pride Parade. In the days leading up to the festival weekend, diverse associations and organisations host a wide range of events in Zurich focussing on LGBTI topics. Over 20 events were held in 2018. Since 2016, the association has offered financial support for selected Pride Week events.

Pride WeekendThe Pride weekend on the Kasernenareal site in Zurich city centre attracts thousands of visitors from all over Switzerland and neigh-bouring countries. In 2018, Alexander Wenger and Gossipa were live on stage hosting a diverse programme which featured political state-ments and musical entertainment. Bars, food stalls and information stands around the festival site cater to the different needs and inter-ests of the Pride-goers.

Pride PartyThe official festival programme on the Kasernenareal comes to a close at 11 pm each night. Most of the visitors then move on to other parties to continue celebrating. The association has organised the official Zu-rich Pride Party under its own steam since 2016. With close to 3,000 people, it is the biggest event on the party agenda. In 2018, the party was held at the Plaza Club and the Hive, and was an enormous success.

Specific Sponsorshipat Zurich Pride Festival

There is significant added value in your involvement in Pride, the inter-actions with the diverse LGBTI community and friends on the festival site, and the associated visibility. Offering sponsorship in a specific area (materials, staff or finances) is a great way to provide targeted support for the festival. The association holds a long-standing place in the city’s events calendar, so there is also the option of longer-term cooperation.

Cooperation is welcome in the following areas:› Festival bar› Office container› Sanitary facilities rental› Bar/stand items (table sets, bar tables,

refrigerated vehicles, refrigerators, bar counters etc.)› Safety infrastructure (barriers, signs, site plan for visitors etc.)› VIP area infrastructure› Artist sponsorship› Staff / helpers› Volunteer T-shirts

Of course, this list is not exhaustive and additional suggestions can be incorporated. We are happy to discuss your specific requests and requirements.
