50 years of Supporting Older People to Remain Independently at Home

Chairman’s Annual Report for 2016
2016 has been our 50th Anniversary year as an Association and was marked with a wide range of activity throughout the year, leading to a special celebration on 25th November with an evening party to say ‘thank you’ to our wonderful volunteers and with speeches by special guests. We started the preparations a year in advance, so that on the day the village hall looked its very best, decked in stylish lighting, with over 100 volunteers and guests, all fed by an amazing array of cakes and savouries prepared by our team of caterers led by Ann and René Kaiser. This led on to speeches by our very own local celebrities: Susan Pyper, Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Nick Herbert, our MP, and Patricia Arculus, Chairman of West Sussex County Council, who also baked the splendid ceremonial cake. All talked of their very local connections and of what PDCCA and its loyal volunteers contributed to Pulborough and our surrounding villages. The other icing on the cake came earlier in the month, when we received news that we had been voted ‘Best Community Organisation’ in West Sussex by the West Sussex County Times. All this and more was commemorated in a collage display put together to show our history over half a century and achievements and celebrations and mutual support right up to date. We also celebrated having in our midst both our co-founder Jean Seagrim and Margaret Bending-Beckett, the daughter of our other co-founder, the Rev. Desmond Bending, who had made the journey from Cambridge to be with us. Jean graciously accepted our suggestion that she become our Honorary President, to mark her 50 years of continuous service to our community, which continues with her organisation of several activities. This has also been a year of changes, with sad losses and also new people joining us. November saw the passing of a stalwart member of our Committee, Betty Evans, and Jean represented us at her
3
funeral in Chichester on 21st. Then on Christmas Eve, we lost Elaine Crossley who had dedicated so many years to care in the local community. We miss them both very much. Alan Sugarman was welcomed as our new Treasurer at the AGM in March, and has already been effective in bringing in sponsorships; he is still ably seconded by Philip Migdale as needed! All the activities and clubs we run are detailed elsewhere in this report. But we also took part in the wider life of the village: fundraising on the Flag Day during volunteering week early in June, and then, on 11th June, benefitting from the generous donations of plants from David Kirkwood at the Plant Fair at the Village Hall. In September we took a stall at the annual Harvest Fair and set up a tombola for the day, awarding as prizes a huge range of jams and other preserves donated by Ann Kaiser and others of our cooks. Aside from raising our profile by being out and about in this way, we have also focused on trying to link our activities and support to what is being provided to Pulborough by other organisations. We have met with Pulborough Medical Group representatives to talk about referrals and how we can help the work of primary care. We have met with Age UK Horsham to discuss how we can run complementary support for older people in the village; and we have met with Action in Rural Sussex (AiRS) about connecting up and signposting, including through Good Neighbours. We plan to do more of that during the coming year. I will conclude by thanking and congratulating the very many people who give up their time to help the life of our village and those of our residents who need that bit of support and togetherness. Thanks to our Committee Members who keep us organised, and especially to Sheila Moore, our Secretary, who is entirely indefatigable on our behalf. Here’s to the next 50 years!
John Dixon - Chairman

Trustees Report 2016
The Association is governed by its Constitution which was adopted on 22nd July 1985 and amended on 7th October 1991, 31st March 2003, 13th March 2013 and latterly on 23rd March 2015. Our objects are:
a) To promote the benefit of the elderly inhabitants of the area
of benefit in any manner which is now or hereafter may be
deemed to be charitable in law, and
b) To relieve persons resident in the area of benefit who are in
conditions of need, hardship or distress and to coordinate
similar work undertaken in the said area by other voluntary
organisations.
Trustees are appointed by the Committee and hold office for life or until discharged at their own request or by the Committee by resolution. We now also have an honorary President, whose position will be formally confirmed at our AGM in March. Our activities during the year are reported on by their organisers elsewhere in this report. Much of our funding is from local authorities, but we have funding from generous local organisations and from individuals who support what we do. We maintain a prudent level of reserves, given the current difficult economic climate and the uncertainty of a revenue stream. John Dixon

Wednesday Afternoon Club Venue: The Arun Hall, Pulborough Village Hall Contacts: Rosemary Russell 01798 873174 Liz Sollom 01798 812573 Gerald Batt 01798 872388 From 2pm to 4pm each Wednesday during 2016 (except for a week at Easter and Christmas and during August), the 43 members of Pulborough Wednesday Club enjoyed their afternoons of Scrabble, Rummikub, card games and short-mat bowls, with occasional indoor kurling and monthly opportunities for a foot, back or neck massage and to join in gentle sitting exercises. We have celebrated Valentine’s Day while being serenaded with music, Fairtrade Fortnight, Easter, the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen and our own Isabella, and Jen’s 98th Birthday - all with special cakes at tea-time. Ice creams were served on the last Wednesday before our August break. Members pay £1 each week which goes towards rent and refreshments, while their £5 Annual Subscription almost covers the cost of a Birthday and Christmas gift. We are very grateful to Pulborough Parish Council for their 2016 grant towards the cost of our Christmas Party and entertainment – this year a wonderful mix of magic and poetry performed by ‘Tommy Cooper’ and ‘Pam Ayres’! Our spring, summer and Christmas raffles were great fun and raised funds for the Club, as did our sale of donated jewellery. In October, together with Lunch Club and other friends, we filled shoeboxes for needy families and elderly people in Eastern Europe. An afternoon of films, tea and cake at Sullington and an organ recital given by John Mann at Lancing, were both kindly arranged by Storrington and District Rotary Club. Two very successful outings were arranged with Roadmark: an April Mystery Trip, which took us to the New Forest and a very enjoyable October day at the Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park. Here we had time for lunch, a tour of the engine sheds and the excellent museum before our train journey to East Grinstead where our coach was ready to bring us home.

Enjoying our 2016 Christmas Afternoon Tea
It is always hard to say goodbye to members who’ve had to move away or aren’t able to come due to ill health and sadly, three of our friends passed away in 2016 but we’ve also welcomed several new members during the year. As ever, we are so grateful to our friendly team who, each week, set up the tables, support some of the games groups, lend a listening ear, prepare refreshments and clear away after us and to those who drive the minibuses which bring us door- to-door. Our members are a friendly bunch of 50 to 98 year olds who would love you to join them. Why not give us a try in 2017! Rosemary Russell, Liz Sollom & Gerald Batt

Toe Nail Cutting Venue: Meadows Room, Pulborough Village Hall Contacts: Jean Seagrim 01798 872540 Christine Wells 01798 875291 This service continues to be extremely popular. We have approx 50 clients for a twelve week basic course of treatment and have an occasional waiting list. But as our clients are mostly elderly or disabled they find that they often have to cancel, and we do our best to fit everyone in. Jean Seagrim Tai Chi Venue: United Reformed Church, Pulborough Contact: Michelle Clifford 01798 872910 e-mail [email protected] Tai Chi is continuing to flourish and grow in Pulborough with three classes now running on a Monday morning. Having three classes means that all abilities are catered for and class sizes mean that everyone can see and follow our excellent instructor Matthew Ward. Currently there are 30 people on the Tai Chi register and the ability of the groups range from complete beginners to an enthusiastic group of improvers. We also have a steady trickle of people who come along to try this gentle but hugely beneficial exercise. Some stay to become ‘regulars’ and some decide it is not for them. The regulars benefit over time as they come to realise that Tai Chi is not a ‘quick fix’ but has lifelong health benefits. A typical class will involve: Breathing techniques and meditation, Qigong (standing Chinese yoga) to stretch and warm up the body, walking exercises to improve balance and a flowing Tai Chi 'form' which aims to improve posture and ease of movement. Many of the regular members report improvements to balance, posture, walking, muscle strength, flexibility, breathing and also mental health to name but a few.
8
We have managed to keep the cost of sessions at £4.00 despite increased costs and this will be reviewed in September 2017. This represents fantastic value for money as comparable classes of any type are typically more expensive. ‘It’s one of the hardest things I have learnt but one of the best’.
Come along and try it out: Monday mornings: 9.00 – 10.00 – Mixed ability/Beginners 10.05 – 11.05 – Improvers 11.10 – 12.10 – Beginners/Mixed ability First Tuesday Club Venue: Meadows Room, Pulborough Village Hall Contact: Jean Seagrim 01798 872540 Helen Arbeid 01798 813176
Janice Anstey 01798 874523 (Falls Prevention) Gina Spain 01798 872497 (Knitting Group)
We meet from 11.00 to 12.45 on the first Tuesday of the month, and serve drinks and eats and have a few stalls and always welcome visitors.

The knitting group knit premature baby outfits and jerseys for Africa. The Falls Prevention group meet in the corner overlooking the Brooks and do gentle exercises. Janice Anstey is always willing to answer questions. Jean Seagrim
Sight Problems Group Venue: Nightingales, Green Meadows, Rivermead, RH20 2GG (with thanks to Saxon Weald) Contact: Helen Arbeid 01798 813176 The meetings take place in the ground floor lounge at Nightingale House. We receive information from the Macular Society, 4Sight, Vision 2020, RNIB and Leonard Cheshire Disability. We search the internet for any English language sites (universities, research sites) for any information about wet or dry age related Macular Degeneration. We receive information about glaucoma, and eye-related diabetes symptoms. The size of meetings varies. We have two new members and we might be gaining one new member who lives in West Chiltington. We cancelled the July meeting because the temperature was forecast to be so high; instead we had lunch at the Tea Rooms in August. The group had a lovely, jolly Christmas lunch – again at the Tea Rooms. Helen Arbeid

Pulborough Lunch Club Venue: The Arun Hall, Pulborough Village Hall Contacts: Ann Kaiser: 01798 872819
Jenny Hudson: 01798 873279 for offers of puddings
We ran Lunch Club for 47 weeks in 2016 with a break after Christmas and Easter and two weeks off in August. On average numbers were about 52 and it was always heartening to see members, who had been poorly over an extended time, returning to be with us again. Sadly a few members have died and also some have moved to care homes or to live nearer their families. Every week we served a homemade soup and once a month provided a cooked meal. We celebrated Valentines Day, Easter and Christmas with special meals. For the Christmas meal, we had a monetary donation from Storrington and Pulborough Rotary and also support from Sainsburys and Tescos in Pulborough, allowing us to give members a complimentary meal. We were also grateful to Pulborough Parish Council who gave a grant towards the running of Lunch Club. Thanks must also go to our rota of 35 pudding makers, who supply us with some wonderful puddings and desserts, week by week In April we were approached by a representative from Tescos Fairshare Food Cloud. Each week Tescos gave us fruit and vegetables that no longer had a shelf life but were still ‘in date’. From donations we were able to make small bags of fruit and vegetables for our members to take home and also it helped towards making the weekly soup and fresh fruit salad. We were also pleased to have two members of Tescos come to help at the Lunch Club. Lunch Club is very blessed with an amazing group of volunteer helpers who are so caring when members arrive and during their
11
stay for Lunch. Thanks also go to René Kaiser, our chef, who ensures all the food is fresh and nutritious and to Jill Jones who washes up week by week. A special thank you also to Keith Russell who helps us put tables and chairs out each week. Sadly on Christmas Eve, Elaine Crossley died. Elaine had run Lunch Club with me over the last few years and her expert knowledge of care in the community will be sorely missed by so many of us. Ann Kaiser

Volunteer Visiting Scheme Contact: Jane Allison or Wendy Roberts Tel. 07741461868 e-mail [email protected] The Volunteer Visiting Scheme (VVS) is a well established and greatly valued service offered by our group of volunteers. Currently we have 12 visitors who visit 15 people either in their own homes or in a care home. We spend an hour or so with them on a weekly basis, giving people an opportunity to chat in complete confidence about their lives, their families and if necessary give them the chance to discuss any problems or worries. It is a service which offers friendship, respite for carers and help for relatives who maybe live far away and cannot visit on a regular basis. People can be visited on a long or short term basis depending on the circumstances. We are very grateful for personal donations from client’s families and for grants from Horsham District Council and Pulborough Parish Council which enable us to meet any expenses. VVS is always delighted to hear from people who are able to give a little of their time each week and would be interested in becoming a visitor. If you know of anyone who would benefit from a visitor or you would like to be a visitor yourself, please contact us by phone or e.mail for further information. Jane Allison

Pulborough Community Transport Contact: 01798 875600 Mon to Fri from 10am to 12 midday Outside these hours to Michael Clenshaw, Co-ordinator on 01798 872368 This service continues to offer a wonderful facility for all our local community. We currently have 40 volunteer drivers using their own cars that will pick you up from your own home and take you to your appointment, wait and bring you home again. These journeys incur a nominal charge which is paid direct to the driver and is a lot cheaper than a local taxi. The standard charge to Worthing Hospital and return is £18.People who are on pension guarantee or pension credit may have their travel expenses refunded by the NHS if they can provide supporting documents.
Volunteer driver David Clark (standing) and organizer Michael Clenshaw Our charity also owns a wheelchair accessible vehicle, nicknamed ‘The Blue Angel’ which can take a person seated in a wheelchair and 2 other passengers in addition to the driver.
14
There is a telephone booking line which is open 5 days a week Monday to Friday between 10am and 12 midday. Ring 01798 875600. Outside of these hours or for emergencies please ring Michael Clenshaw, Co-ordinator on 01798 872368.
Michael Clenshaw Celebrating our 50th Year On Friday 25th November 2016, we held an event at Pulborough Village Hall to celebrate our 50th year of providing services and activities for local residents. In the early 1960’s, Rev. Desmond Bending & Jean Seagrim were both involved with several voluntary activities in the village including, The Darby & Joan Club, an Old People’s Welfare Association and, from 1962, a Meals on Wheels service. Wishing to coordinate these activities, in 1966 they drew up a constitution and registered their activities as a charitable foundation under the name of the Pulborough & District Community Care Association. The people and services have changed over the years, but we continue to serve the residents of Pulborough & the surrounding villages. The evening was organised to thank all our volunteers, without whom we could no longer provide our services. The icing on the cake was being awarded “Best Community Organisation” at the 2016 County Times Community Awards earlier in November – a fitting tribute to mark our 50th year.
The evening was attended by Mrs Susan Pyper, Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, local MP Nick Herbert and Mrs Pat Arculus, chairman
15
of West Sussex County Council, as well as other local councillors and supporters. But the main focus of the evening was to say a big THANK YOU to all those who volunteer in the local area, who were invited to the celebration. Sheila Moore
Nick Herbert MP, Margaret Bending-Beckett, daughter of co-founder the late Rev. Bending, Pat Arculus, Chairman of West Sussex Council, Jean Seagrim MBE, co-founder, Susan Pyper, Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex and John Dixon, Chairman of PDCCA

The picture below shows our amazing celebration cake, which was baked, decorated and generously donated by Councillor Pat Arculus, who so often provides us with good advice and support - oh, and lovely cakes!
Treasurer’s Report on 2016 Accounts
Yet again we have to report that, despite a generous legacy of £5,000 from the estate of Olive Martin deceased, our outgoings exceeded incoming funds, by some £2,800. Although this is partly due to late receipt of funds we would expect to see our reserves continue to be depleted in future. We are very grateful for support from Pulborough and West Chiltington Parish Councils, Horsham, and West Sussex County Council, as well as Harwoods and the Pulborough Medical Group. In addition many of our volunteers generously give both time and funds.

MONEY MATTERS: How we are funded: The Pulborough & District Community Care Association is a registered charity. We receive grant funding from various bodies, including West Sussex County Council, Horsham District Council, Pulborough and West Chiltington Parish Councils, as well as legacies, sponsorship and donations from generous individuals and organisations in the community, including the Pulborough Medical Group and Harwoods. We also carry out regular fund-raising, including our Flag Day, usually in early June. We charge modest fees for most of our activities and services but these do not cover our full costs and we always welcome any extra help.
Donations & Gifts in Wills:If you would be prepared to pay more to use a service or would like to provide us with a one-off donation, we would be extremely grateful – just speak to the service organiser. If you are a tax payer, any contribution can be uplifted via Gift Aid.
Also, after providing for your family & friends, you may wish to leave a charitable gift in your will (a legacy), to show appreciation for the work that we do. This is a simple matter, but it should be done using a solicitor, when making your will, to ensure your wishes are properly recorded. If you have already made your will, you can still help as you can amend it by adding a codicil to your will, again by speaking to your solicitor. This may also provide tax benefits for your estate.
If you would like to discuss this with us, please telephone our treasurer, Alan Sugarman

THANK YOU to our new Honorary President
In the early 1960’s Jean Seagrim was involved with several voluntary activities in the village, including The Darby & Joan Club. Jean started a Meals on Wheels service in 1962 and in 1966 a constitution was drawn up and the activities registered as a charitable foundation under the name of the Pulborough & District Community Care Association.
Jean receiving a “thank you” bouquet at our 50th
Anniversary celebrations
Jean still runs First Tuesday Club, oversees our very popular Nail Cutting service and remains on our committee. The committee agreed this year to make her our very first Honorary President, to mark her 50 years of continuous service to our community and to show our appreciation for all she has done, and continues to do, to make PDCCA what is is today.
