Patricia Mears on Elegance in an Age of Crisis

Wednesday, February 25, 6:30 pmDespite the dire financial climate of the ’30s, this decade gave rise to surprising innovations in fashion. The more restrictive attire of the preceding Edwardian era gave way to an international trend toward softer, minimally ornamented, and elegantly proportioned clothing. The fashions of the 1930s were made for movement, highlighting the natural and classically idealized body. Patricia Mears is the Deputy Director of The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Please join Ms. Mears for a short reception at 6:30 pm, followed by her lecture on the rise of a new era of elegance, during one of the United States’ most tumultuous decades.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES IN THE LIBRARY: GRADUATE STUDENT INFORMATION SESSIONSAre you a graduate student? Are you working on your dissertation or studying for the GRE, GMAT, or LSAT? At the library, we notice you working every day: in good weather and bad, in the morning and in the evening, and often during your lunch hour. Studying and writing, however, do not have to be solitary activities, and who better to work with than fellow Club members?

The Library Committee and Library staff would like to invite you to join a graduate student working group.

Former Yale Club president and member for more than 40 years, Peter Wells, is a familiar face to many around the Yale Club. To say that the Yale Club is an important part of Mr. Wells’ life would be an understatement. The Club has been not only a second home, but also a place where he has celebrated many significant moments in his life, including his wedding. For the full interview, visit yaleclubnyc.org

Thought Leaders in BusinessTuesday, February 3, 6:00 pmJan Nolte on How to Use the Power of Executive Presence in Every Conversation to Fast Forward Your Business

How is the Yale Club important to you?I met my wife at the Yale Club! It was 1997; I was on the Yale Club Council, and we had invited the board of the UVA Club to dinner. At dinner, I sat next to Lisa Montgomery who was on the UVA board at the time. Long story short, I ended up marrying her one year later in May of 1998.

Tell us about your wedding.Lisa and I got married at the Yale Club. The ceremony was offsite, but we came here to celebrate the wedding with family and friends. The reception was in the Main Lounge and we had the 1998 Whiffenpoofs perform at the party. Every one of the guests thought that the Yale Club was superb in terms of the venue and service. That was in 1998 and the Yale Club continues producing wonderful weddings every year.

What do you love most about the Club? The staff is incredible! The people stay here. Domingo, for example, took a job here and left a couple months after starting. He was gone for six weeks but quickly came back, and he has been here ever since.

What is your favorite dining room? The Grill Room is probably my favorite, although I really like the Tap Room as well. The food is wonderful, and I have yet to find a member who disagrees with me in terms of quality and value. There is never a time when I am in New York that I don’t have lunch here.

Pomerol Wine Dinner with Edouard Moueix

Wednesday, March 11, 6:00 pmEdouard Moueix is the grandson of Jean-Pierre Moueix and current Sales Director for Jean-Pierre Moueix. Join Monsieur Moueix for a selection of four of his exceptional wines, including the Chateau Trotanoy Pomerol 2010, which received a Wine Spectator rating of 98, along with Chef Kehrli’s precise pairings for $90 per person, exclusive of taxes and gratuity. Reservations must be made in advance using the Club’s online calendar.

WINE of the month: Jean-Pierre MoueixJean-Pierre Moueix is synonymous with Pomerol, and no other family in Bordeaux has had such a profound influence on an entire appellation. The region itself and most of the estates in the area are extraordinarily small, resulting in limited quantities of wines that tend to be quite rare. Specializing in the softer flavors of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, wines of Pomerol offer formidable terroir with tannin-driver power and loads of flesh throughout the finish. Jean-Pierre Moueix produces some of the most highly sought-after wines in the world, including the infamous Chateau Petrus Pomerol.

THEATER SERIES: The Audience with Helen Mirren

Friday, March 27, 8:00 pm For sixty years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as the Audience. Academy Award winner Helen Mirren returns to Broadway—and to the throne—in a riveting new play by Peter Morgan, writer of the Academy Award-nominated film, The Queen. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry, The Audience takes theatregoers behind the walls of Buckingham Palace and into the private chambers of Queen Elizabeth II, offering glimpses of the woman behind the crown and the moments that shaped a monarch. Please make final sale reservations for $145 each using the Club’s online calendar well in advance, as space is extremely limited. Two reservations per member maximum.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN THE UNITED STATES: A PANEL HOSTED BY YALE GALA AND THE YALE CLUB OF NEW YORK CITYThursday, March 5, 6:30 pmTo commemorate 20 years of partnership between GALA and the YCNYC, we are pleased to host this special panel on same-sex marriage. Same-Sex marriage remains an important question in our country, particularly with the current pending Supreme Court case. Since the landmark 2013 Supreme Court ruling in United States v. Windsor, U.S. district courts in twenty-four states, state courts in six states, and one state court addressing the recognition of same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions, have found that same-sex marriage bans violate the Constitution, but a handful of states maintain their restrictions. Join Yale’s Gay and Lesbian Alumni (GALA) and The Yale Club of New York City for a panel featuring Marc Solomon ’89, National Campaign Director of Marriage Equality; James Esseks ’87, Director of the ACLU LGBT & AIDS Project; Susan Sommer ’83, JD ’86, Director of Constitutional Litigation at Lambda Legal; and Professor George Chauncey ’77, PhD ’89, the world’s preeminent LGBT historian. A short reception at 6:30 pm will be followed by the panel at 7:00 pm on the upcoming critical issues surrounding same-sex marriage equality in our country.

Reservations for both events become available on Monday, March 2 on our online calendar, and space for the Gala is limited.
