Week Beginning – Monday 18 th May – Year One Writing Activities

Writing task: we are going to create a different version to the ‘Why Leopard has Spots’ which explains how a leopard got its spots! At the end of this week, we will have planned our new story.

You will need:- Paper, pens and pencil to write with - WAGOLL- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoNkkzNGBjE = clip of the story watch until

10.00

Writing Task 1 Your first task is to watch the video clip of the story on YouTube on how the leopard got its spots! Leopard got her spots because she was kind to adder. Once you have watched the video, we want you to draw a story map for that story.

Reminder- a story map is when you draw an s in the middle of a piece of paper (draw it so it fills the page). Then you draw pictures to show what happens in the story, the beginning starts at the top of the ‘s’ and you draw pictures all the way down until you draw the ‘ending’ at the bottom of the ‘s’.

Here’s the link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoNkkzNGBjE

Challenge: can you write sentences for a couple of the pictures to describe what is happening? You may want to write these on post-it-notes so they can go over the top of your pictures.

Writing Task 1 – Option B

Instead of drawing pictures, stick these pictures in order and write a sentence next to each one describing what is happening. Pictures on next page!

Writing Task 2 Now that you have done the story map for how the leopard went from not having spots to having spots, you need to pick your animal for your own story! Draw a picture of your animal and write what your animal will have by the end of your story- this will then help you create the title for your story.

For example: My giraffe will have a short neck at the beginning but a long one by

the end.

Title: How the giraffe got it’s long neck.

Think of ways to describe your animal and write these down around your picture of the animal. You could use this word mat to start you off. Maybe you could write them as sentences?

Writing Task 3 – Option AYou are now going to decide how your animal is going to get the feature you decided yesterday- for me, I need to decide how my giraffe is going to get it’s long neck. You need to be as creative as possible! Brainstorm these ideas by writing them all down around a picture of your animal and then circle the one you want to use.

Writing Task 3 - Option BYou are going to do the same activity to plan how your animal is going to get the feature you decided on yesterday. Draw two pictures, one of your animal before and one after it has changed! Then in the box beneath, write a sentence explaining how your animal is going to change.

My animal before… My animal after!

Write in this box, how your animal is going to change:

Writing Task 4It is now time to plan for your story. We would like you to use this planning proforma beneath which will help you to form your story and ensure that it makes sense. We are asking you to write it in paragraphs- in this planning proforma, each box represents one paragraph. Please use the WAGOLL to help you be as creative as possible.

WAGOLLHow the giraffe got it’s long neck

Down in the sweltering heat of the savanna in Africa, lived an animal that looked like a horse. This animal had caramel coloured spots all over its sunshine coloured skin. It had a thing long tail with hair at the bottom that looked like a paint brush. This animal was called a giraffe.

One day, the giraffe was trotting along the side of the river looking out for some green crisp leaves to eat. But the giraffe was miserable because there were no leaves on the trees at a level that he could reach. But he had a fantastic idea! He decided to try and get the leaves in any way he could.

His first idea was to jump as high as he could. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t reach the leaves and his knobbly knees just buckled under him whenever he landed on the floor. He then tried to stretch on his tip toes like ballerina to reach the leaves at the top. All of a sudden, a colourful bug flew into his nose and he sneezed so loud that all the animals nearby thought a thunderstorm had started!

Then the giraffe looked around and felt ecstatic! He realised that as he sneezed and was stretching, his neck had stretched so that it was now a long and beautiful neck that made him taller than all the other animals. He also realised that he could now reach the crisp green leaves at the top of the tree without trying.

And that is how the giraffe got his long neck.

Writing Task 5:You now need to design a front cover for your book! This is your opportunity to set the scene for your book- where is it happening and how many characters are involved?

Be as creative as possible! Use as many different materials as you can- we look forward to seeing how creative you are going to be.
