1 Enlist your Family's Support

The startup journey is difficult, and the stakes are higher than in a cushy job. Hence, before you begin this journey, it is important to have your family on your side. “Moral and material support from the family is critical. They will also have to make sacrifices, which they cannot unless they buy into your dream,“ says Sunder Nookala, managing director and chief executive officer at Kwench.

2 Work Out the Basics

A startup needs sufficient funds to get going.“Raising funds can take months or even years.Address that first. Also, financial stability is imperative for your venture's success,“ says Vikram Chopra, co-founder, FabFurnish.Only if your concept is strong will funds come your way, he adds.

3 Invest in Critical Talent

No game is won without a team, wherein complementary skill sets and diverse opinions converge to add value. “As co-passengers in this challenging journey, they are as much invested in the process as you are,“ says Nookala. Chopra calls his team the “steady squad.“ He admits, “Building a like-minded team is the backbone of every enterprise.“

4 Find a Mentor

• Startups are run mostly by first-generation entrepreneurs, who may take time to warm up to the nuances of running a venture. To face such challenges, it is best to find a mentor. “Find an all-weather mentor whose views you respect and who has your best interests in mind. She has to be the one person with whom you will share your best successes and worst fears,“ says Nookala.

5 Don't Give Up

`There is no easy road to success.' This is a key startup mantra.Once the funds come in, you need patience -the next building block for a successful startup. “Do not expect instant gratification as an entrepreneur. You may have to wait for years before you see returns,“ warns Nookala. It is important to stay highly determined and keep reinventing oneself with every mistake made in the startup journey, adds Chopra.
