Authority control

• Names checked against OCLC and authorized.

• Subjects – no authority control as yet. Library of Congress headings not consistent or specific enough for taxonomic purposes. Considering a mix of LC & ITIS (International Taxonomic Information System).

SmartPORT

• Based on the Z39.50 technology

• Z39.50 is a protocol that translates commands back and forth between the local system and the external database provider.

• Local Unicorn user friendly interface that enables the user to capture records directly into Unicorn.

SmartPORT at NHM

• Use to capture a complete cataloguing record and replace an existing brief record.

• External databases used – OCLC & RLIN.

• Not used yet at NHM for acquisition purposes or for new authorities.
