When it comes to planning a wedding, there’s one question that never leaves your head – howcan I save money and still make it perfect? Sure, your wedding is supposed to be the happiestday of your life, but if you spend every dime that you have, life forever after will be much harder. The good news: There are hundreds of ways to cut costs — from table centerpieces to ceremonyseating.

One of the most common ways brides cut costs is to hire an aspiring wedding photographerinstead of a seasoned, expensive professional. Sometimes, this works out just fine, and yearslater, you might even see their name in photography magazines and read about how they madetheir way to the top. 1. They Ask You What To Shoot Next

Yikes! Your photographer should always have a plan and always know what to do next. If theydon’t, they will not manage their time correctly and miss out on great shots.

2. They Don’t Look Busy

This is not a sign your photographer is struggling; it’s a sign they are disconnected from your day.Your photographer is there to WORK for you and should be working MOST of the time exceptduring a few short breaks. I (Zach) always refused to stop shooting and stop watching the actionat weddings because I never wanted to miss anything. I once shot a 15-hour wedding withalmost no breaks because I was committed to capturing the day the right way.

3. They Don’t Want To Shoot Somewhere That You Asked Them To Shoot

It’s not a good sign when they may make up an excuse like “the lighting is better over here,” or“this shot would look better than what you want.” The reality is that they CAN’T shoot therebecause they can’t manipulate the lighting. This happens when the photographer “specializes” innatural light (that is something to stay away from when booking!), and what that statement meansis, if there is not good light, the pictures will be terrible! Never hire a photographer who can’tmanipulate light. He or she will miss key moments or you may not get the shots you wantedbecause they simply don’t know how to set them up.

Four Things EveryPhotographer Needs toKnow About Posingby Topher Kelly

12 Ways to Improve YourWedding Day Workflowby Glenn Orion

4. They’re Looking At The Back Of Their Camera Most of The Day

A real pro occasionally checks their exposures with their histogram. It is fine to check that theimages are coming out correctly, but most photographers are looking at the image that they tookof you on the screen, and are NOT checking the actual systems and settings to see if things arebeing shot correctly. Chimping (that is what they call looking at the screen all day) can be a signthat they are unsure of what they are doing. If you catch them looking at the screen too much, ask them “how does the histogram look? Is the red channel properly exposed?” This will throwthem for a loop and either make them laugh, or cry. It will make them laugh if they are checkingthe histogram (which tells them quickly if the images are shot safely and correctly and is a goodhabit for a photographer to have) or make them cry because they not sure what the histogram is,and you now know more about photography then they do.

5. They Ask You To Do Things That Make You Feel Less Than Comfortable

Some photographers only know how to get a few looks from their clients based on a few tricksthey have. Most photographers don’t take the time to get to know their clients and find out whatmakes them laugh, smile, or feel safe and comfortable in front of the camera. When they don’tknow how to read you, they will default to their same old same old and it may work, or it maymake you feel uncomfortable. Again, that is why it is critical that you hire a photographer that youtrust and that you have seen work, or did work for someone else you trust. Then you know theywill be cool on the wedding day and if things go haywire, they won’t start acting weird. Thinkabout it; If you feel weird when taking a photo, even if the photo turn out great, you will rememberhow you felt when taking it and it will never be meaningful to you.

Michael Bethea · · Top Commenter · Photographer at Michael and Carina Photography · 110subscribersI love Zach and Jody's business advice. It was through their advice my wife and I established the financialprinciples of our business - save, don't buy on credit - the Dave Ramsay method. Unfortunately, I can't say Iagree with the premise of this article.

I DO agree that photographers should know how to manipulate and control light no matter what thecircumstances; I do NOT agree that it is solely the clients responsibility to decide where photos should be takenbut rather that it is a collaborative, creative process.

Also, again while photographers should know how to manipulate light, I'd challenge the authors of this article totell a client that they should "STAY AWAY" from booking primarily natural light photographers such as ElizabethMessina, Jose Villa, or Tanja Lippert - all titans of the industry who "specialize" ... Kristen Uhler · Owner at Kristen Lynne PhotographyI agree with Mike. They have some good points, mostly being that wedding photographers shouldknow how to use their equipment, but can I just say, "duh." I can't figure out who is the audience ofthis little ditty is supposed to be? Brides? This article doesn't help brides at all. This is all stuff thatwould happen AFTER it's already too late. So this article is NOT helpful or well intentioned for brides.Photographers all have different styles and no one way is the "right" way (natural light, commercialflash w/e). BUT as a professional wedding photographer we must know and understand ourequipment and how to use it in various situations. But I do feel like there is a little bit of a "dig" onNatural Light photographers here. But the "advice for brides" is completely wrong and out of line.I'd educate brides on how to pick out a good photographer from the get-go... not on the weddingday. This is just going to cause issues, or make existing issues potentially worse. Reply · · Like · 8 hours ago6

Allison EastmanSorry, no. Lol! You've set this up to make brides crazyWhen they see the photographer not shooting people eating. AGood photographer takes quality photos...not a plethora of photos. And i doubt you take the brides suggestionof shooting at a location in the sun at highNoon.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 20 hours ago24

Jenna Michele Shumate · · Top Commenter · Owner at Jenna Michele PhotographyThis advice is just all wrong. When I tell a client to stand in a spot for better lighting, its so the photoslook BETTER. Not because I can't shoot in a place with crappy lighting.

Allison also said it with sorry but people hate being shot while eating, and sometimes clients WANTyou to put the camera down and let them BREATHE. Not everyone wants you up in there shooting24/7. If the end result tells the story of the day in a good way, who CARES.

Pretty much rolling my eyes at this little publicity post from Z&J which btw if pics of a cake and alittle girl and some halloween lighting are the best they can do to show off what a GOODphotographer creates, buyer beware ;)Reply · · Like · Edited · 10 hours ago

Carol M Vallecalle · Top CommenterThis is stupid. What is the purpose of this article? Freak the bride out on the day of her wedding? What is shesupposed to do? Fire the photog on the spot just because he said "no the noon light is right on your face andyour squinting and I'd have the put the diffuser right on your face to prevent you from squinting?" !!!! Really! Andthen what? The bride would have to have someone take iPhone photos for the rest of the wedding ? Bull!Another thing this article may cause brides to say " we want our money back, because you were not lookingbusy that one second, and wait you shouldn't even have had to take a food break! Or a pee break! Zach andCody never do! Give me my money back!Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 20 hours ago12

Not oh if the photog does this or that or farts during your wedding he's a horrible photog andyou'll get some hideous images?!?!? GrrrReply · · Like · Follow Post · 20 hours ago6

Ana Lui Golebiewska · · Owner/Photographer at Ana Lui PhotographyI totally disagree with 3,4 and 5 ;)I have my own style and know best where I want to shoot or where the light is best. I won't eer let my brides tochoose the light or spot they think is good as most of the time they have no idea about photography and itstechnical aspect. They just like what looks pretty. And they booked me cause they want to get a certain look thatI provide. Is like asking Dior to cut a dress just like you tell him to with material you choose :) that's crazy!Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 19 hours ago

Ana Lui Golebiewska · · Owner/Photographer at Ana Lui PhotographyAlso looking the back of your camera is important - not only to check the exposure but to watch for the eyes - ifone of the guests or family have eyes shut during family or group shots I won't be able to use any of the shots,so I check for flight, focus as I shoot most of my wedding on f1.4 and 2.8 and making sure all eyes are open :)Oh and looking busy is great but once you get the shot you want you have to keep on moving. There's no pointof over working and over doing yourself if you got the shots you need. I guess that comes with experience.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 19 hours ago

Janet Gerbutavich · Salve Regina UniversityI wonder how Zach and Jody did at their first wedding? Is the quality of their work the same now as the. Didthey never check the back of their camera? Certainly the brides that are looking to hire them are not the samebrides that are looking to hire someone like me. I don't suggest that anyone hire a photographer with noexperience. I do suggest that photographers start by second shooting so that they gain experience. That beingsaid, everyone has to start somewhere. I hope my photography is better next year than it is this year. I strive todo the best, most professional job possible. But I am at the start of my journey. Does that mean no one shouldever hire me? Callie Beale · · Photographer/Owner at Callie Beale PhotographyI attended your natural light in camera workshop and specifically remember you saying, because I quoted it inmy notes that "if you don't have good light you don't have a good picture." And the entire day was dedicated onhow to manipulate natural light to create beautiful photos. I do have a good bit of OCF and know how to use itwell if natural light is not an option, but personally I don't like the look of it. Kyle Reynolds · Syracuse UniversityIt sounds like all of these issues could be avoided be meeting with a photographer(s) prior to the actualwedding. My wife and I were married just recently and we had a great experience with an up-and-comingphotographer, but we knew it would be a great experience because we talked with them about what we wantedand told her what photos we really liked from her previous work then left her to deliver. IMHO, you picked thephotographer before the wedding and shouldn't be watching them to make sure they do what you agreed on. Ifyou picked a crappy photographer to save $10, that's not the photographer blowing it as much as the weddingparty either making a poorly informed hiring decision/communicating poorly beforehand or getting in the way ofthe photographer's creative expertise and fighting the photographer rather than enjoying their own wedding.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 13 hours ago2

Maura Shoemaker · · Studio Manager/Photographer at Bryan's PhotographyHorrible advice! If a bride wants to stand under a tree that creates horrible splotches all over her face becauseof the angle of the sun the photographer better be thinking of a different spot to put her. If a photographerdoesn't check the back of his camera he could be shooting the entire wedding at an exposure that needs a littletweaking.. It's the digital era for a reason!! Also why freak the bride out if she she's the photographer take abreak to grab water? They are working all day long usually for 7 hours straight this article is full of misinformationand hopefully brides aren't reading this...Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 13 hours ago

Robert Norman · This is insanity. When did suggesting that the 'light was better elsewhere' a sign of laziness as opposed to a signof someone who actually understands light? Shall I waste 10 minutes to 'manipulate the light' or ask them tomove a few feet in another direction? When did running around non-stop for 12 hours increase productivity, clarity and sensitivity to your subject? Is asking if theres anything in particular they want to shoot a sign of nothaving a plan or being thoughtful about your clients? Is glancing at the camera back to double check things asign of weakness or a smart move to be 100% certain you have produced what your client will be happy with?I'm very happy for Zack and Jody as they obviously are lucky enough to operate in perfect wedding dayscenarios with all the time-in-the-world and no constraints or pressure. Perhaps they will offer a pricy workshopon this so I may learn their time-bending secrets.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 13 hours ago

Mark Treen · Owner at Treen MediaI can think of many reasons why for some photographers displaying #1,2,3,4, and 5 in some cases cold be agood thing. Take 5 for instance. I know a lot of introverted WONDERFUL wedding photographers. I'd be willingto argue that they can get images just as wonderful as extroverts. It's wonderful to be the bride's friend butthat's not what they are there for. If they see the beautiful picture and can calculate exactly how to get it whatdoes it matter if they act like? Ten years from now what matters is not the one new Facebook but the framedprint that still can cause you to cry. And for that I'd more trust Rainman then Tom Cruise.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 13 hours ago1

Trina Heppner · Photographer at PS PhotographyThis article is complete bull crap, especially number 3. When I choose a good location instead of a crappy onethat my client doesn't realize is crappy, they appreciate the end art so much better. I check the back or mycamera and take breaks. Every once in awhile I'll even check with my client to see if there is somewhere specificthey want me to be (usually during the getting ready after I've gotten everything). My brides generally get 700-1,000 photos, but there will be times when I don't look busy. That doesn't mean I'm disconnected or missedsomething. Sometimes I've just gotten everything there is to get at this point. This article is really disgusting andthey should be ashamed or writing it. Tiffany Burke · · Owner/Photographer at Tiffany Burke PhotographyI have a couple questions:

1. Is this article really aimed towards the wedding couple on their big day? I can't imagine writing an article with 5things to look for on your big day, that is aimed to stress the couple out more and show them they have made abig mistake with hiring a photographer who does the above mentioned. What can they do about it during theirwedding except feel bad about their decision? Instead of feeling happy on their day and waiting for the photosto speak for themselves, they will be trying to memorize the word histogram and how to use it at the right time inorder to make someone feel bad.

2. I can't help but feel this article was in fact, NOT made to make brides feel bad on their wedding day, butinstead, made to make other photographers feel they need to follow these tips and said people abovea... See MoreReply · · Like · Follow Post · 4 hours ago

Lana Cease · Maryville, Missourithis article is so disappointing (thanks Jessica!) If someone wants to take photos in direct sun at 1p.m., wouldn't I be a terrible photographer to not say "I love this place, the light is much better overhere in this stand of trees, you'll look better, will that be ok?" Also, there are many times I don't havemy camera up to my face and it looks like I'm "doing nothing" The truth is I'm watching and waitingfor the moment. My camera is resting on my chest with my hands on the shutter, that doesn't makeme lazy, that makes me OBSERVANT. And lastly, what a horrible thing to do to a bride on herwedding day. She hires a really awesome photographer, and looks over and sees them looking atthe back of their camera a couple times now she's stressed out that she has an ineptphotographer. Thanks for the added stress Zach and Jody, I'm really disappointed in you. I'vealways been a fan and stuck up for you guys, and now I'm rethinking if that was a wise businessmove on my part.Reply · · Like · 3 hours ago5

that, I feel that they devalue the industry as a whole.

But turning the selection process of a photographer for your wedding into this KGB inspired interrogation is justplain retarded. And the very notion that natural light shooters are a bad thing, or that if you can't make thecouple's idea work you're a shitty photographer is a LUDICROUS notion.

I don't know exactly what you're smoking, but I'd get off the magical broomstick before you hit a pole orsomething, in your rather obvious inebriation. In an already competitive industry, all you're doing is SEEDINGNEEDLESS DOUBT from the viewpoint of a so-called professional as if the client has any clue WHATSOEVERabout the technical aspects.

Perhaps you need a lesson or two on grace. And more than a few on sense, if you're going to pollute theinterwebs with even more bad advice (much like the forums where people argue about sharpness).

Don't quiz your photographer on the histogram. Your job is to smile and look pretty... our job is todo everything else related to photography. YES we'll tell you if the lighting sucks or the background sucks...YOU PAY us for that. 2. They Don’t Look Busy - sometimes, I'll just be standing there observing because I want to see if there's astory or moment that's going to pan out or I'll be looking for a better position/angle to shoot from.

3. They Don’t Want To Shoot Somewhere That You Asked Them To Shoot - one time, the father of the bride said,"Hey let's take a photo in front of the water!" It was a green, algae-filled pond.

4. They’re Looking At The Back Of Their Camera Most of The Day - I do this because I kick ass and I likeviewing shots from earlier in the day just to remind myself of how much ass I really kick.

5. They Ask You To Do Things That Make You Feel Less Than Comfortable - let's be real here... being the centerof attention in front of a camera is already less than comfortable for a lot of people. Page 16: 5 Signs Your Wedding Photographer is Doing a Terrible Job · Sure, your wedding is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, but if you spend every dime that you have, life forever

Maria ButterfieldExactly who is the audience for this article? The information shared (good or not) will not help a bride and groomin selecting a photographer for their wedding day. Rather it gives advice on things that could happen on thewedding day, when it is too late. If it is indeed geared towards brides and not at insulting photographers why doyou close your article with an invitation to watch Susan Stripling on CL? She teaches photographers and fromwhat I've seen of her on CL she does not instruct in line with the points made in this article. As a matter of factSusan teaches about finding the good most flattering light for her subjects, first and educating her clients on thechoices. How will a bride in need of a photographer benefit from watching Susan's class for weddingphotographers? It certainly seems like the author could have found a less insulting (to photographers) and morerelevant way to educate brides. If this was just a piece to promote Striplings upcoming classes, forphotographers, he should have interviewed Susan for the article. This reads like a mean-spirited hit piecedesigned to insult many and help none.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · about an hour ago1

Pam Doughty · Top Commenter"Most photographers don’t take the time to get to know their clients and find out what makes themlaugh, smile, or feel safe and comfortable in front of the camera." Wow. Now THAT is a blanketinsult...Reply · · Like · about an hour ago1

Jessica Del Vecchio · · Photographer at Jessica Del Vecchio PhotographyWhat a terrible blog post. Terrible advice for a bride & groom who should not be worrying or second guessingtheir photographer on their wedding day, not to mention.that judging by observation only how someone isshooting is a poor guide to what they will produce. I can't believe a wedding photographer would write thisdrivel.Reply · · Like · Follow Post · about an hour ago

Nate Bonney · · Owner and Photographer at Nate & Megan PhotographyI would like everyone to actually look at Zach & Jody's website. Look through everything they have to offer. Notmany of us have accomplished what they have. They know how to do natural light and off camera light betterthen any of us. And they are kind enough to share how it is done. And their look is all part of their branding andthey explain that and why they are holding cameras. It's so everyone knows that they are the photographersand not clients. Come on people learn about them before you make bad judgement call. OutReply · · Like · Follow Post · 54 minutes ago

Chuckie Arlund · · Owner/Photographer at Arlund Senior Photography · 497 subscribersSo so sick of this industry and all of the rock stars and groupies. Just go to work. If you want to be a celebrity, move to Hollywood and become a waiter or something. This rant is not targeted directly at Z&J. Just as a whole, this whole thing. The whole idea of this and all of thejaded and mixed responses. The haters and the followers. The blogs and companies that create fame whores. Damit dinger you can bounce a flash off your hand or Miami humidity. Inside joke...Reply · · Like · Follow Post · 35 minutes ago

To everyone posting their mean opinions on here Zach & Jody Photography are incredible people who have andcontinue to inspire lots of photographers to live their dreams. If you haven't heard of them, look at their work andwhat they have down and point your finger at the person who wrote the article and took what they said out ofcontext!
