God has put out the call for us to be involved in culture and our wider world. But why should
we show up? Here are five reasons that may trigger some thoughts.
1. Because God hasn’t abandoned His world. God is s ll at work in his crea on and He
oversees what is going on.
Kuyper says, “So too everyone instructed by the Word of God knows, in terms of God’s crea‐
on, that behind that nature, behind that creaon, a hidden, secret working of God’s power
and wisdom is occurring, and that only thereby do things operate as they do.” (Wisdom and Wonder , Pg. 39)
2. Because you are a part of God’s crea on. He put you here to be a part of the whole.
Separa ng yourself diminishes the good in fl uence you can have within culture.
Kuyper says it this way, “We may draw no other conclusion than that the rich variety among
people, in terms of aptude and talent, came forth from the creaon itself and belongs to the
essence of human nature.” (Wisdom and Wonder, Pg. 43)
“Much less may believers retreat to their ecclesiascal corner and, sasfied with simply hav‐
ing faith, abandon the building of the temple of science to unbelievers, as though science
does not concern them. This they may not do, because the scienfic enterprise is not an exer‐
cise inhuman pride but rather a duty God has laid upon us.” (Wisdom and Wonder , Pg. 93)
3. Because your contribu ons are unique and important. You are unique and only you think the way that you do. It
could be that God created you to move culture along in a certain way by giving you special gi s that are meant to
bless everyone. Our unique contribu ons are a part of God’s plan.
Kuyper explains, “One should not suppose that in the world of humanity God intended nothing else than monotone
uniformity, and that pluriformity and variety arose for the first me through sin. If that were so, then sin would have
enriched rather than impoverished life.” (Wisdom and Wonder , Pg. 43)
4. Because original thought existed in God – God’s thoughts are the founda on for all noble work.
“We have discovered that original thought existed in God. A manifestaon and embodiment of this original thinking
appears to us in the created universe and to human beings a capacity has been given for reflecng on and inves‐
gang this divine thinking in a uniquely human manner.” (Wisdom and Wonder , Pg. 49)
5. Because obedience means for us to respond to the world God is preserving through common grace.
“…scienfic enterprise is not an exercise in human pride but rather a duty God has laid upon us. God’s honor requires
the human spirit to probe the enre complexity of what has been created, in order to discover God’s majesty and wis‐
dom and to express those in human thoughts with human language.” (Wisdom and Wonder , Pg. 93)
