A client recently told me that seven salespeople left his company recently.

They were all millennials.

Is there something different about millennials that made them want to leave the company? Yes and No.

Millennials leave sales jobs for the following five reasons:

Millennials prefer a compensation plan that provides some security. Avoid 100% commission if you’d like to keep millennials around.

1. Compensation issues.

Old school management doesn’t work anymore. Rethink the idea of “paying dues” to allow millennials to move up in your organization.

2. Outdated management attitudes.

The lone wolf sales structure where the salesperson is responsible for the entire process does not make sense to millennials.

3. The structure of the sales organization.

Millennials enjoy working for organizations that exist for reasons beyond the bottom line.

4. Lack of buy-in in the company culture.

Millennials want and need to be trained and developed. Understand the strengths of each person on your team, and train accordingly.

5. Lack of training and development.
