Kevin Jonas• Paul Kevin Jonas II (born November 5, 1987), also known as Kevin Jonas, and K2 and is a

member of the Jonas Brothers, a boy band he created with his younger brothers Joe and Nick. The Jonas Brothers originally started with a solo singing career for Nick , but when Joe and Kevin sang backup for him, the record producer liked their sound and signed all three of them.

• In early 2005, Columbia Records' new president, Steve Greenberg, listened to Nick's record. While Greenberg did not like the album, he did like Nick's voice.

• After hearing the song, "Please Be Mine", written and performed by all the brothers, Daylight/Columbia Records had decided to sign the three as a group act. After being signed to Columbia, the brothers considered naming their group "Sons of Jonas" before settling on the name "Jonas Brothers".

• It's About Time, the brothers first album was released on August 8, 2006. According to the band's manager, it was only a "limited release" of a little over 50,000 copies. Because Sony was not interested in further promoting the band, the Jonas Brothers then considered switching labels. The band was ultimately dropped by Columbia Records in early 2007.

• After shortly being without a label, the Jonas Brothers signed with Hollywood Records in February 2007. Around the same time, the brothers began appearing in commercials for Baby Bottle Pops, singing the jingle] Their self-titled second album, Jonas Brothers, was released on August 7, 2007. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 200 chart in its first week.

• Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president in the history of the United States, according to projections by NBC News.

• Obama reached the 270 electoral votes he needed for election at 11 p.m. ET, when NBC News projected that he would win California, Washington and Oregon.

• Campaigning as a technocratic agent of change in Washington, not as a pathbreaking civil rights figure, Obama swept to victory over Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, whose running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was seeking to become the nation’s first female vice president.



• A crowd nearing 100,000 people gathered in Grant Park in Chicago, awaiting an address by Obama. Hundreds of thousands more — Mayor Richard Daley said he would not be surprised if a million Chicagoans jammed the streets — were watching on a large television screen outside the park. Obama was expected to speak about midnight ET.

• Surveys of voters as they left polling places nationwide indicated the breadth of the victory by Obama, the son of a Kenyan father and a white American mother. As expected, he won overwhelmingly among African-American voters, but he also won a slim majority of white voters. He won among women and Latino voters, reversing a longstanding Republican trend. And he won by more than 2-to-1 among voters of all races 30 years old and younger.

• That dynamic was telling in Ohio, which President Bush won in 2004, and in Pennsylvania, where McCain poured in millions of dollars of scarce resources. Obama won both.

• Obama also took Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and New York, all states with hefty electoral vote hauls, NBC News projected. He also won Virginia, reversing 40 years of Republican victories there.



• McCain countered with Texas and numerous smaller states, primarily in the South and the Great Plains.

• In interviews with NBC News, aides to McCain said they were proud that they had put up a good fight in “historically difficult times.”

• A senior adviser said McCain himself was “fine” but that he felt “he let his staff and supporters down.”

• Obama will have a strongly Democratic Congress on the other end of Capitol Hill. The Democrats won strong majorities in both the House and the Senate, and all that remained to be decided was whether the party could reach a procedurally important 60 percent “supermajority” in either or both.

Background

• When the Albany Plan was presented to the colonies, colonial governments rejected it.

• They did not want to give up their individual authority to form a union.

• Parliament also rejected the Albany Plan.



Fort Necessity

• While the delegates were meeting in Albany, the British had begun building a fort along the Ohio River.

• However, the French drove them off and built Fort Duquesne (dooh-KAYN) on the site.

• A young Virginian named George Washington arrived and with more soldiers built a fort called Fort Necessity.







The 1st Battle

• The French attacked, causing many casualties.

• Washington’s men were either killed, injured, or captured.

• This force Washington to surrender.



French and Indian War

• Washington’s defeat in 1754 was the start of the French and Indian War, between France and England.

• In 1756 fighting also began in Europe and elsewhere.

• This worldwide conflict was called the Seven Year’s War.



Edward Braddock

• Kig George II sent General Braddock to command British forces in North America.

• Braddock knew little about frontier fighting, which led to disaster when he decided to attack Fort Desquesne in 1755.



British Loss

• Braddock’s forces marched straight into an ambush by French and Indian troops. As one survivor explained, “The Enemy kept behind trees, and cut down our Troops.”

• The surprised British soon retreated. The British soon retreated.

• The British suffered almost 500 casualties, including Braddock himself, but the French and American Indians lost just 50.

• The turning point of the war came in 1759, when British general James Wolfe captured Quebec, the capital of New France.

• The terms of the treaty gave Canada to Britain, which also gained all French lands east of the Mississippi River except the city of New Orleans.

• From Spain, which had allied with France in 1762, Britain received Florida.

• The Treaty of Paris changed the balance of power in North America.

• Britain had a claim to almost all land east of the Mississippi River.

• Spain was now the only other major European nation with lands in North America.
