Rates Objective: To understand and determine unit rates.
RatesA rate is a ratio (fraction) comparing quantities of different kinds of units.

A ratio generally does not have a unit (or if it does, they are the same) and a rate has different units.
For example,
RatesSarah has five chocolatebars, and she can eat all of them in one minute. Joan has ten chocolate bars, and she can eat all of them in one minute.
RatesThe rate by which Sarah eats her chocolate bars is 5 bars/ 1minute; Joans rate is 10 bars/1 minute. The ratio between Sarahs chocolate bars to Joans is 5:10 or 1:2.
